Perhaps its barbaric to turn it into a sport for entertainment value and I probably wouldn't go see it, but in reality bullfighting is a "play" trying to depict the very core aspect of all life that exists on earth. The fight to survive.

it doesn't draw large crowds wher people don't spend money in the local area to eat?
there is no merchandising whatsoever associated with it?

Life long cattle rancher checking in just to point out that almost every single thing posted in this thread about the animals is way way wrong factually. That said I only advocate bull fighting if it's healthy bull vs healthy matador. As far as tradition being awful goes, if you think Spain is bad come to SoDak and check out the plains Indians traditions in regards to animals, especially dogs.

Although, we also do torture cows for entertainment here in the US.
The only difference is that the torture happens outside our view, but the entertainment inside our home or a restaurant. Helps with our moral conscience and everything.

In Spain they have the "Tercio de Muerte" which is "The Stage of Death" where the matador has 15 minutes to kill the bull.
