Who made this table.... a chimpanzee?
"Prestige, money and wealth?" Let me give you some information....
Dentistry is the highest paying profession, for graduates straight out of university in Australia. We are the ONLY profession to hit $100,000 straight away, after graduating.
Show me ANY other job, where you get this kind of salary... 2 years out of university

so you cant compare this to a job where you get paid 200k probably without superannuation to a job that pays you per hourits not that easy to graduate and land a job in a good metropolitan clinic that will train you to do pros. anyway, why should they get a grad to train when theres a influx of overseas dentists in australia ? its possible but not as easy as you make it out
not getting enough patients in ? you get the boot then that 200k ad on seek is up again lol
starting salary for a dentist is 60k, thats if you even find an openning for a grad. Family friends of ours are dentists, guy makes 150ish working as dentist in a prison with SEVERAL years of experience, hes heavily involved in academics too so nice try lol

Yes, and given that private dental offices are often always booked out, I don't see why that is so relevant?
Patients wanting to go to Sydney Dental Hospital (public), have to typically wait 3 years. Lol just lol.
Re: Overseas trained dentists - the federal government recently made the shift to BLOCK overseas trained dentists from getting a working visa over here, and protect local graduates.
Re: starting salary... lmao @ $60k. My friends who graduated in 2015 have all found full-time employment around Australia. Two of them who I questioned about their salary stated $90k. This was in Western Australia
There is a difference in starting salary of dentists in Australia, in each state. From what I've seen, Eastern states grads don't fare as well compared to WA.More evidence to the contrary of the paltry "60k" you posted. Here is a job ad for a dentist to enlist in the defence force. These award rates are consistent with general dental grad full-time salaries around Australia -
https://www.seek.com.au/job/31956187...2&whereid=3000
$97k PLUS super, first year out of dental school. One of my mates is sponsored by the navy at the moment (scholarship), while in dental school. He's earning $63k/year (tax free), has his books etc all paid off, and will have a guaranteed job of just under $100k when he graduates. Don't give me this "paid per chair" bollocks lmfao. Upon graduation and active enlistment will be paid PER HOUR.

In the states, both pharmacy and dentistry are doctorate degrees ie not "straight out of college [undergrad]".
But yeah PharmD grads make starting $100k-$130k in my area in south US, depending on hospital vs retail. As young as 24yo. I know this because I work in pharmacy finance.
Dentists can have a higher salary long term though. Both great professions alternative to "that other Doctor".

lol then edit out all of your posts and say "to get near 100k as a grad dentist, move to WA or join the military if you want superannuation"
I couldve moved to WA and easily make over 100k as a graduate casual agency nurse, but I wont shout it every chance I get without mentionning the conditions because its misleading. Not sure how far you are in your course, but without your stripes at an education focused hospital/clinic, you'll struggle to get those 200k jobs you want so bad because you'd be useless.

Show me a TV series where dentists are portrayed as cool, sharp-talking professionals (hint:you can't). This is why dentistry isn't associated with prestige. It might be in the bubble you exist in, but not with the GENERAL public.
All of us have experienced teachers, and most of us have experienced a good teacher which had a positive impact on our lives. Therefore, teachers don't need a TV show.
Nor do firefighters, the prospect of a house fire is terrifying enough. Combine this with the popular notion of a firefighter rescuing a baby from a burning building.. the profession is associated with the epitome of heroism.
Most of us have been comforted by a doctor. Couple that with TV shows like House, ER etc. Brb doctors played by George Clooney.
Pop culture has portrayed lawyers as highly paid, sharp-talking suits that earn their money through wit and argument.
Who the phuck likes going to the dentist? There is nothing sexy about dirty mouths.. kids who have to endure braces.. etc. Also, don't dentists have one of the highest suicide rates?

Yes, I actually do have a decent idea of the politics etc behind the area of medicine. I have family and friends in the profession lol.
Re: suicide rate.... that's largely true for many careers that have a high degree of stress and intense work. That's life.
Yes, I do have a "freakin clue", retard.
I have WORKED WITH cardiologists, surgeons, sleep physicians, occupational health physicians, general practitioners, and even haematologists.
Their pay > virtually every other career except say... specialist in dentistry/investment banker/successful businessman. And I have a pretty fukking good idea of just how hard it is to get into medical school, and the "hurdles" that exist to students before they graduate, and even start applying for specialty fellowships... after working several years >70 hours/week at hospital.
I LIVE WITH MEDICAL STUDENTS.
I also have an ORTHOPAEDIC SURGEON in my dental school cohort. He wants to be a maxillo-facial surgeon now (requiring BOTH a medical AND dental degree here in Australia... plus the Max-Fac fellowship after).
Next.

Probably completely oblivious as to how medicine is run in the US as well. Suicide rate in Australia is absolutely not what I'm referring to. I spoke generally as I view many miscers to be from the US - my mistake.

Suicide rates are up there for all health workers here, more for acute sub specialities
I think some people get haunted by the decisions they make in medical emergencies, they blame themselves for their patients not living when in reality medical emergencies have 50/50 rate of survival in a hospital and 70/30 in the community under the care of a paramedic
But hey dentistry is the best

If anything, people respect dentists due to the fact that you need to be somewhat intelligent with a good work ethic to become a dentist rather than because of the actual work that they do. Also, not sure if srs about 90% of the guys in this thread saying they wouldn't become a dentist even if they were being paid 500k+. I've met many people ranging from 30~50 year olds who said they'd be more than happy to become a dentist (these include university professors, car salesman etc) if they could go back in time and study again after seeing how their dentist friends live.

$100k as a graduate casual agency nurse? You must be smoking crack if you think you'll get anywhere near that as a new graduate nurse.
"without your stripes at an education focused hospital/clinic".... I don't quite know what nonsense this is lmao - as long as you have successfully completed a dental degree, and worked for 1-2 years and covered most areas of general dentistry - you can land a job like that here as a recent dental graduate.
What hospital isn't "education focused"? Lmfao.

The suicide rate for laborers/tradies is disturbingly high...

If graduate dentistry is 4 years and has the similar entry requirements, why not just go medicine?
I can understand people doing the 5 year undergraduate, but screw doing 7+ years for dentistry when you can do medicine instead.

Some of us don't want to deal with people in a life or death scenario on a daily basis. I can certainly see the rewarding nature of medicine etc, but it's not for me. I've worked with doctors in various areas such as - cardiology/sleep medicine/occupational medicine/haematology/GP. From what I observed, it's an excellent field to grow into. The specialists will typically be the very brilliant sorts of minds, who like the intense/high stress atmosphere of their specialty, solving problems etc. Still though - I didn't like the stress.
- I like using my hands
- I also like medicine/science/technology
- Mouths and teeth don't bother me at all
- I empathize with people having dental issues, having been through a few when I was growing up
- I'd like to be in charge of my own practice one day
- Dentists also make a significant change in peoples day to day lives. Just ask someone with a severe malocclusion or dental abscess. Try going to a medical doctor and see how much "good" they can do for you here while you're in agonizing pain lmfao. Inb4 "here's a prescription for painkillers"
- Excellent work/life balance compared to the horrendous balance a doctor would go through, in their hospital training.
- Raising a family - much easier for a dentist... in terms of time being around kids etc
- Doctors are only ever really independent, once they become a consultant in their field of expertise (including general practice)
- Once you finish medical school... don't even think about putting down the books. You'll have AT LEAST another 5-15 years of study to go, depending on what field you want to enter. GP is the quickest... while other fields like neurosurgery and paediatric neurology would easily take up many more years....
- Once you graduate as a dentist, you are free to practice as a fully qualified general dentist
- There are opportunities for specialization, if a dentist feels the inclination. If a dentist is feeling really masochistic... they could then study medicine, and become a maxillo-facial surgeon. These guys get paid the big bucks, yet deal with VERY serious things such as people who have been in car crashes (head/neck smashed up) etc.
Most people in my course will be fully qualified at ~27/28 years of age... while my medical student friends will only be truly finished (reached "consultant" status), when they are ~35 at the earliest
We do only get to live a finite amount of time in our lives - to me, the time I spend with my family is too precious.Positive Crew

- Excellent work/life balance compared to the horrendous balance a doctor would go through, in their hospital training.
- Raising a family - much easier for a dentist... in terms of time being around kids etc

[Dido music plays softly as you read]
DearAfro, I meant to write you sooner but I just been busy
You said your studying to be a Dentist now, how far along are you?
Look, I'm really flattered you would call yourself a Doctor ,
And here's an autograph for your classmates too, I wrote it on the prescription pad
I'm sorry I didn't see you at the Medical conference, I must of missed you
Don't think I did that **** intentionally just to diss you
But what's this **** you said about you like to perform surgery too?
I KNOW you must be clownin' dog, come on, how ****ed up is you?
You got some issues Fro, I think you need some counselling
To help your ass from bouncing off the walls when you get down some
And what's this **** about us being equivalent cause you did 2 years of anatomy and physiology?
That type of **** will make me not want us to meet each other
I really think you and your boyfriend need each other
Or maybe you just need to treat him better
I hope you get to read this referral letter, I just hope it reaches you in time
Before my patient gets radiotherapy , he needs some teeth extracted then hell be doin' just fine
Why don't you relax a little, I'm glad I inspire you but Fro
Why are you so mad? Try to understand, that I do want you as a member of the Head/Neck MDT
I just don't want you to do some crazy ****
I seen this one **** on the news a couple weeks ago that made me sick
Some Dental student was drunk and tried to do a procedure that he couldn't do,
And had his girlfriend in the trunk, and she was pregnant with his kid
And in the car they found a dictation tape, but they didn't say who it was to
Come to think about, his name was, it was you
Damn!
TLDR - Fro feels anger at supposed lack of respect for dental profession. Tries to justify position with statistics to back up his claims. Is like Milo Yiannopolous vs feminists, Surgeonbrah feels sorry for him but is somewhat amused at the genuine rage portrayed in his posts.
Still a good chance to take the piss out of a Dentist though... All in good humour!

A 2nd year DMD student recently competed in local/state/national bodybuilding competitions and took out 1st/2nd place. Whenever I bump into him, he's always a happy and well-adjusted guy.
To answer the other part of your question - at my university, the dental school program is significantly more demanding than the medical school program.Long story short... we have 13 exams at the end of this year. The medical students have 2 exams.
Nuff said?

It's cute hearing med students complain about their workload...

you did 2 years of anatomy and physiology?
We also do - cardiology, neurology, pharmacology, infectious diseases, pathology, biochemistry, physiology, head and neck anatomy (in more detail than medical students), respiratory medicine, gastrointestinal system, immunology, histology, anaesthesia, embryology, haematology.... to name a few. If we also count my previous 4 degrees, that would amount to a bit over 5 years worth of anatomy and physiology. No hate - information, not misinformation
This video is scarily accurate. Lmfao
All in good fun...

My posts are now about genuine questions.

In the "Special Needs" specialty of dentistry, psychiatry is taught. This is because Special Needs Dentists are concerned with the oral health of people severely affected by intellectual or physical disability, or experience profound psychiatric or complex medical issues (eg. Cerebral palsy, Downs Syndrome...)

why not respect a road worker? you don't want crappy roads!
if you want a clean house/office respect your cleaner
if you want your health looked after thank the clerks, and nurses and cleaners at the hospital - the doctors don't do all the work.
does this make sense?
