This. With my current salary, I feel like I'm living in a movie. NYC has a ridiculous number of neighborhoods with their own look and atmosphere. Most tourists come and hang around the Times Square/Penn Station area and wonder why it's so crowded and why they're being swarmed by homeless crazies. The vast majority of tourists never even leave Manhattan, just lol

This is the issue I'm seeing with most of the negative responses ITT.

As a New Yorker Times Square and penn station/herald square are the last places I'd want to be.

Edit: of course if it's around Christmas they'll be in Rockefeller center which is somewhat nicer but still way too fuking crowed.

It sucks because all the people I know that came from and still live in NYC just say keep your head down and don't look anyone in the eyes....

That being said, why the hell would you want to visit a place where that has to be prefaced? I am a southerner so being nice and saying good morning/evening to people and yes sir/no ma'am is normal....please and thanks. I was told not to act that way.....just be cruel and don't say much.

lol@ visiting a prison environment...

no hate to NYC, would love to go just for the food/deli's and a Broadway play.

not surprising that the major gripe of NYC is regarding social anxiety issues by a bunch of NEETS. If you can get past the fact that there are MILLIONS of people crunched into a tiny space then it can be a very pleasant city. Some chit is just annoying but if you have been around city folk before you can ignore most of the BS just like the cops do.

It's not a loaded question at all. I'm not implying everyone can go and do this, only the very small minority can. However, it is possible. That is right around the average total compensation for the top performing first year BB IB analysts. I'm saying I don't know anywhere else in the world where going to a corporation (i.e: not starting your own company that blows up, that's a different story) and collecting first year comp in that range (Silicon Valley is the only other caveat that I know of).

Pretty much also the only corporate place where you upside is damn near unlimited. A lady in her early 40s who I interviewed with the other week for a job at Goldman clears over 3m/year as reported by Bloomberg. This is a fuking person who just went to work at different corporate jobs, didn't create anything on her own in terms of a business, and makes well into 7 figures. That is not possible nearly anywhere else outside of c-level execs.

Been to NYC and I did not like it, but I hate cities in general. I don't like getting bumped in to constantly and being annoyed by homeless people. I could see the appeal for a young single person however. A lot of jobs and great social life.

no ****ing thanks jeff. I love tampa, born and raised, and one day will move back but even Tampa is nearly too big for me to enjoy living there. i couldnt imagine living in a place like NY or LA or SF. no ****ing thanks.

When I went there I saw many young beautiful and obviously wealthy couples. Serious the girls were hnnng as fuk and actually seemed really nice. I really felt like I was "living life" when I was there even though I didn't do much. It just felt like a really happening place with all the constant hustle and bustle. I personally found NYC invigorating. Yes there were lots of bums but there was also so much more to behold I didn't even notice the bums after a while.

What does Atlantic City have to do with NYC?? It's like 2 and a half hours away!

With regards to the other things, there are usually way fewer options, and those options are much lower quality, in other cities.

Yeah but the best sports are in new york. The best museums, the best food, the best plays, best zoos, the best shopping, the best clubs. And so on.

Yeah you can do stuff in other cities but it isnt as good as ny.

I live about an hour train ride outside of the city, it's fun to go for a day every couple of months. Too much for me to live in a place like that, but it's fun to experience in smaller doses.

Never been to NYC, but I have a question to those of you who have spent time in Seattle and NYC. Are the homeless in NYC worse than Seattle? Chit, it isn't just the homeless it's the SJW's and wannabes trying to hock CD's and crappy t-shirts. I don't even go near Pike Place or Pier 62 near the Aquarium, it's a friggen homeless hipster convention. I spend my time in Bellevue or Kirkland where it's even too expensive to be homeless.
