Its just the way I view life, its pretty much meaningless and generally kind of s*itty so you may as well have fun while you can. thats all it is to me.

Am I happy overall no because of the way I see the world and life in general, but I do the best I can to have fun and do what I enjoy. I'm not sure what the hell else you're supposed to do

I don't play nearly as much as I used to, though I still make time for civilization 6 on the weekends.

It's easy to view human life as a meaningless speck in eternity. It takes a lot more effort to try and find meaning and live a good life as possible.
I see why you think happiness is all that matters, it's a cop out to avoid responsibility for how your life turns out

Another bad thing about hardcore gaming is you NEED people to be cooperative. Like, I'm trying to learn mobile development now, but I have to ****ing wait for everyone to stop playing video games before I hit up Lynda, youtube, or whatever.

Like fvcck you, you can't put the ****ing controller down for 30 minutes each day?

Not to mention the updates my computer needs, or whatever large files I need to download, I have to wait. Its a ****ing selfish hobby.

A person might turn on a TV and stare at it mindlessly for 3 hours, getting cheap laughs at recycled jokes. This is bad fun, it requires no thought or engagement with the entertainment, on the extreme side there is alcohol/drugs etc. which is harmful fun
what if mindless tv is what makes someone happy though? are you saying they still shouldnt do it?

thats how some people do it, I dont think that makes sense. At some point, as early as tonight or as long as a 50 years from now I'm going to die and nothing I ever did will matter. I dont see the value in anything other than fun

I wouldn't say I quit, I just don't play them anymore since there doesn't seem to be any good games worth $60.

Do people still play Call of Duty? I was playing Halo quite a bit, but it just didn't have the same feel as Halo 2/3 did.

Here's thought experiment...

What would heaven be for a gambler? Las Vegas. Now suppose you were a gambler, died, and went to heaven. You awake in the penthouse with stacks of money everywhere. You look out the window and see the Bellagio fountains. Fukin awesome you say. You put on one of the thousand dollar suits you have in the closet, grab a few stacks of cash, and run down to casino floor. As the elevator opens you are graced with gorgeous women wanting to be with you. You snag a few and start heading towards the Blackjack table.

You get to the table and throw down some cash. BAM! Blackjack. You place your bet again...

BAM! Blackjack. Again..

Blackjack!

Everyone is cheering, the chicks are rubbing ur dink. It's awesome. Heaven is fukin great.

The next day... nothing but blackjacks and women.

The next day... same thing but now you throw in a bunch of drinking. You get drunk but no hangover.

Over and over... every day ... you win ... never lose ... everything goes your way ... nothing bad happens... win win win

Finally at the end of the week you snap... "I know... i know... Blackjack! Booze! Sex! I get everything i want!"

So what does this say?

To me it says, if you got everything you wanted all the time you would get bored. You would most definitely be conflicted... how can i have negative emotions if i get everything i want? Winning and feeling good would lose their meaning or seem somewhat empty. I think this explains why celebrities that seemingly have everything can be such train wrecks.

It most certainly begs the question: What is real fulfillment?

My personal view... embracing and overcoming struggle and sharing it with others. I've personally have never felt more at peace than embracing extreme situations for all that they have to offer and realizing that no matter the outcome ... the experience was unique and eye-opening. There is no greater satisfaction than being completely in the moment, being aware of it, and thinking ... "Damn what a ride this is!"

I get the point, its a bad example though because part of the fun and thrill of gambling is the prospect of losing. Its the risk

If someone's heaven was for example videogames and they got to play amazing games 24/7 I dont think the same reasoning applies

Personally I would love a life in which I got to do and have everything I wanted all of the time.

This might seem harsh, but you're coming across as one of those adolescents on one of those talk shows that is clearly not happy (the whole audience can see it) but thumps their chest and tells everyone that they are.

You clearly stated your not happy... so you only do enjoyable things. But then you state life is meaningless. Yet, your only meaning is to have fun.

... have you taken an objective look at that and considered how wacky it sounds?

Like the adolescents i described above ... it comes across as a cry for help while at the same time pushing help away in order to prove your internal paradigm ... that life sucks. Do you realize you're doing that on an anonymous message board?

I quit but not really on purpose. Work, side business, girls, sports, friends all take up the time. Video games are pretty boring to me these days

Video games are toxic IMO. I got addicted to "Starcraft" when I was 14-17 and in the process ruined my social life. I haven't played one since, they're addicting. Esp online strategy ones.

If you can use them in moderation that's fine I guess. I'd rather be addicted to hard drugs than a video game, semi-srs.

Outdoors, sports, traveling and sloots are way more interesting anyway.

You didn't immerse yourself in that thought. If every game you played you always won... never failed to beat a boss... never got sniped... the best outcome always happened .... you'd be bored in a week.

I assume you live in the USA or at least the western world. Which means you have more opportunity and ability than 90% of the world. Yet, you say you would love a life in which you got to do and have everything. Compared to most you do. So clearly that's a falsehood.

Let me clarify since its not that straightforward. I am not happy in the traditional sense of the word, its not possible for me to be happy given my world view and life. For example, I'm objectively not capable of living the kind of life that actually would make me happy(one where I was rich, tall, good looking famous etc).

The best I can do is identify what I enjoy doing, and do those things. That is what I do, and I enjoy my life because of it. I'm living my personal best life, given my goals and interests. I really dont see the problem you have with this

I work in an extremely competitive field and work very long hours yet gaming on the weekend when I am able to is one of my favorite things to do. It keeps me connected with my buddies from all over the country who have moved for work and we bullchit and shoot the chit all night and play games. I save significantly more money doing this as well.

However, I do agree that it does take a toll on my IRL social life as I generally would rather just chill, lift, errands, game, etc, over the weekend as opposed to going out and drinking with everyone. I hate drinking, and I don't enjoy going out to events/bars just to take pics for social media(also hate social media). If I didn't have gaming I would be forced to do those things; super thankful for games actually.

I don't have a problem with it. I'm just shaking my head because it's just rubbish. Why take part in this thread if not to gain insight and other perspectives ... then shut them all out and claim you're helpless?

Do whatever you want... it doesn't really matter to me. But surely you see that your line of thinking isn't helping you???

well the thread went a different direction, this "gaming is a waste of time" thread pops up at least once a month and every time I try to defend gaming because I strongly disagree with the way its singled out as some negative thing to do with your time.

Now we're getting into life philosophy and all that jazz which is a much bigger topic, I'm just here to say that gaming is fun and there's absolutely nothing wrong with using your time for fun things.
