I think I've experienced both but I was pretty young when my family was not that well off so it wasn't that bad. I remember we used to walk for hours to get basic grocery shopping or just to go to the park. Eating out was a huge occasion I would say and it wasn't at a good place. Probably something like McDonalds happy meal. Parents worked really hard though so I had anything I wanted in my teenage years, crazy how ordering a 10 pizza once a week would be too much but now I spend that much on lunch pretty often. Really grateful for what I have though

Feels when you were selling drugs in school to pay for gym, trainers etc for me and my bro so my mum had less to pay out for.
I done A LOT of bad sh*t to get money when i was younger, extorting people was fuking easy when you could picture your mum crying because we only had a tin of beans for dinner.
Fast forward, Mum lives in a 4 bed house in Barrie, Canada, lives a nice life.
I'd do everything i done all over again for her srs.

Wasn't poor, but weren't well off either, in terms of wealth. (which you should have specified in the title too)
Consider everything second hand, and getting used to the word "no" really quickly, when around you all you see are other kids receiving "yes".
Growing up with little gifts for Birthday's or Christmas' , simply because you can't afford it at the time. You'd receive an old toy car or your cousins pyjamas, or shorts that your mom made for you.
You understand the value of family a lot younger and what no means.

Meh, growing poor in a first world country isn't really growing poor.
When you have to work as a child on the street instead of going to school, go days without food on the table, live in basically a shack with all your extended family, you will understand what poor is.
Be thankful you grew up in a country where food stamps actually exist and the government actually gives a **** whether you starve to death or not. Some people don't have that chance.

it's fuking horrible. i grew up with my mom who was divorced already and she was hard working as fuk. she took care of me and my brother. she did nursing and had some cleaning jobs. we would've made it out of our chithole poverty life. but then my mom got cancer and passed away. and then my dad travelled from the U.S. over here to take care of us, and he couldn't find a good paying job. everything is just negative, like you can feel negativity in the air just because we're poor in a society where you have to be making at least $30k/yr to be able to do anything. well my dad is making like $12/hr-$14/hr, and as a teen, my mindset couldn't be focused on myself... like you want to help your family when things are this bad, so my mindset was "i gotta find work...i gotta find work..." instead of "gotta go to college." i don't think people who grew up where their family household income was like $50k/yr can understand. all i wanted to do was drop out of school to help my family get out of this poverty life.
i remember when my mom was still alive we got food donations from the church like once a year. it would be like a second christmas. we'd all be happy. i'm not sure why with my dad making less than my mom did we never got any donations from the food bank or church.

Thats not as easy as a forum post to explain how it FELT, it would take a book to cover all that.
I grew up going to over a dozen schools and lived up and down the east coast. Multiple times having lived in a van or with "friends" of my mom or staying with friends for a week at a time. Living in homes where Id be lucky to have the electricity 100% of the time. Getting my toys, games, and movies sold because we needed money for food. Failing 6th grade because I missed over 100 days due to moving around so much so we couldnt afford renting. Grandparents mailing us food, mom getting food stamps, diggings change out of the car to get sodas from the grocery store machine, Being around heavy drug abuse and alcoholism for many years of my childhood....it goes on and on.
For the record though, my father left after he found out my mom was pregnant, little b*tch said he wasnt fit to be a father, and we had money until I was about 7-8 years old.

My family had very little money growing up. They did their absolute best to provide me with the best life possible however but we did without a lot of things. My parents especially sacrificed so much for me.

I survived on those massive cans of preserved fruits and applesauce. Still love them to this day
So my story is a bit different. Parents and grandparents lived in the USSR, and were ready for EVERYTHING. It all depends on how hard your parents wanted to live srs. Everything was edible. Anything that the ground could grow, we made sure it did. We fish and hunted for food because borrowing a 30-06 and $20 for 15 rounds could kill a mule deer (500lb meat hnggg)
Apart from that, foodbanks, clearance items, handmedowns and the such. Tight-knit slavic communities really helped until my father graduated with his EE degree.
I remember my parents buying almost expired chicken breasts and cutting them into small slivers for soup so that we kids would have some sort of nourishment. They never ate the soup
Socially, I played the russian big kid stereotype. I wouldnt let the rich kids make fun of me, my siblings, or anyone else. When I was finally sent to private school I was nearly suspended a few times for standing up and fighting for a poor kid (who was sponsored by a doctor to go there) because his parents couldnt afford him new clothes.
My grandma moved into a ghetto and I spent every summer there. A real learning experience let me tell ya. Next door neighbor was a psycho and held his mom hostage with a m16. Got to meet the whole SWAT team that day lol.
The main thing I see in poor people is the lack of drive to do anything because of heavy gov assistance and the horrible cyclic patterns of destructive behavior (I'm no good, the rich are to blame, this is good enough, fuk off I know what I'm doing, hustle is life, etc)

it's something that I don't ever want to go back to. i came to america from a refugee camp in hong kong, landed in rougher areas of oakland and then moved to rougher areas of kansas city. I think our rent for a two bedroom including utilities was $125. I had to spray cockroaches down the drain in the tub before taking baths. We always had to put food in plastic containers because the mice would eat through the box/bag. It was always super sketchy walking to and from school as a kid. There were metal detectors going in to the middle/high school I attended, constant fights in the hall. Most of my clothes were hand-me-downs, I think up until I was 8 or 9, all of my birthday gifts were McDonald's Happy Meals or Dollar Store toys. I remember when my parents saved enough to get me the GBA with Pokemon Red, oh man I played that thing until you couldn't see the engravings on the buttons lol. My parents didn't know what food stamps, welfare, government assistance was when we first came to America. They never really considered it since Vietnam doesn't have any of that. We are pretty good now, dad worked towards a CS degree and is pretty up there in software development for the gov. It's definitely made me more grateful for a lot of little things in life but when I went back to Vietnam to visit, I felt like I grew up in royalty.

One note the people in this thread telling other people they don't know what poor is are ****s (serious).
Many people describing their lives in this thread are poor, yes it's relative to the US but it's still reality. People in other countries don't know better a lot of the times so to them being poor is normal.

If I wanted a car or anything I would have to work for it. I had to choose whether to play sports or to work after school. If I needed school clothes I would have to scrounge up money over the summer to buy some. I never had anything handed to me.
There were lots of tough times. I didn't get the boost a lot of kids get. I moved out at 19, mainly because I had to. I struggled hard with money in my early 20s. Often I would search the house for change, under dressers, in couch cushions to come up with gas or food money.
However I got myself through it. I am doing well and have a nice house and a few cars. It was the resilience from going through struggle that made me into a smart and adaptable person.
Gods honest truth. I never lived in an actual house until I was 29 and bought my first house. I grew up in either apartments or a mobile home.

- We were always budgeting; sweets were a treat, cheap school book covers over reused books, re-use clothes (or mom knitted them).
- Taught to work hard for money very young - 4/5 years old working on the farm during the summer, up at 5am, got maybe $200 a summer.
- Never had an 'allowance' - got $1 a week as a young teenager for cleaning my Dad's car though. Then earned $2p/h working at the local grocery store.
- Shared bedroom with siblings etc.
- Xmas was a real treat - the one time of year I actually got gifts - such amazing memories.
Basically, we lived very, very frugally. My Dad was 'stingy' by most standards, but I later realized he had to be. I used to be jealous of other rich kids my age, but now I wouldn't change a thing.
My character was shaped by that and now I'm very financially astute - some of you have an idea of the net worth I've built myself from nothing, but I still don't waste money.

i have two little brothers and i still don't have a lot of cash but sometimes.i barely buy myself food just to give cash to my brothere

Roaches everywhere, cousins and aunts was there
Four in the bed, two at the foot, two at the head
I didn't like to sleep with Jon-Jon he peed the bed
Seven o'clock, pluckin roaches out the cereal box
Some shared the same spoon, watchin saturday cartoons
Sugar water was our thing, every meal was no thrill
In the summer, free lunch held us down like steel
And there was days I had to go to Tex house with a note
Stating "Gloria can I borrow some food I'm dead broke"
So embarrasin I couldn't stand to knock on they door
My friends might be laughin, I spent stamps in stores

Mommy where's the toilet paper, use the newspaper* lies* lies* lies* lies
Look Ms. Rose gave us a couch, she's the neighbor

No guidance, perpetual metabolic damage, malnourished, dehydrated, no social skills, wearing the same cloths to school everyday and getting teased for it, foster homes, etc. I had a paper route at 10 to help bring money into the house. I could honestly write a book on the disadvantages but I'll let you guys use your imagination.

Played outside a lot. Plywood floors and styrofoam windows in an old, ratty trailer. Couldn't even walk around the house barefoot. Miserable not getting new school clothes or supplies after summer break. Couldn't have people over because they had nice houses and well off parents. Lots of hamburger helper. Went to work at 12. Not much else to talk about.

Made our own toys out of wood.
Used our imagination a lot.
Did a lot of walking, learned how to use public transportation.
Learned to use the stove to cook our own food when I was like 8 (eggs, pancakes, soups, etc.)

My memories were never that we were poor, later in life is when I realized we were flat broke.
Grew up with thrift store furniture, lawn chairs, heat was a kerosine heater in the bedroom everyone slept in. It wasn't until I was in middle school that we started doing financially better. That's kinda when I noticed we were buying new appliances, furniture, stuff like that. Seriously though going out to McDonald's was a treat and I remember being very excited for it but being told we could only order off of the dollar menu.
All in all though, family helps out by donating furniture and stuff like that, I remember my aunt's and uncles would take us kids out for a day to the mall for small toys and a movie.
