In all seriousness, I'd probably quit before going to a private company and take some time off in between.

I lived out of my car for 3 months traveling the entire US and it was only $5k. Would have spent significantly less if I had stayed in a certain region and avoided expensive states like California altogether.

If I was in your situation, I would seriously clear out the trunk of my SUV, or buy a cheap van and live out of it for a few months before going private.

But maybe that's a bad idea. Idk.
I wish Hillary would violate me like she violated federal law

This.. At the end of the day nobody gives a fk about the house u live in and car you drive. And the sad part is what he described is basically upper middle class...no where near worth it to sacrifice 80 hrs a week for. Working in accounting on top of it...sounds like the epitome of rotcel.

$140k/(80hx52w)=$33h

I make more than that working strictly 40 hours a week.
When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.

Id probably pick option 1 if I had to.

acquiring new talent is obv more expensive than retaining, but if hes only been there for a year, hes replaceable. pulling this after 1 year seems dubious

Depends how good of a worker he was. If he was top tier quality that's hard to come by, let him come back when he's finished but obviously he can't just pick up where he left off in terms of potential promotions and sh!t. He can do the same job because that's what he fuking does, but he will have lost his spot in line for promotion.

If he was just meh or sucked then sorry you have to leave. You can apply again but no promises. Best of luck and have fun.

It's funny because I did something similar at work but because I was so good they offered to promote me if I came back.

Funny how companies are always willing to pay you more but never will until you threaten to quit. That's how you know you've been getting cucked the whole time.
Death is impossible for us to fathom: it is so immense, so frightening, that we will do almost anything to avoid thinking about it. Society is organized to make death invisible, to keep it several steps removed. That distance may seem necessary for our comfort, but it comes with a terrible price: the illusion of limitless time, and a consequent lack of seriousness about daily life. We are running away from the one reality that faces us all.

No ebrag but I'm a 6 month senior (no mba, not management consulting, not engineering) and make 120, what's up with your salary

I've talked to a managing partner at my firm and he told me all associates are replaceable. That he could easily find a random college kid to do the same job.

If you did option 3, you have serious mental issues.

To everyone who thinks OP is the manager in this position he isn't... This is the ******* who used to always talk about how he wanted to work for big 4 and was always so indecisive about what he wanted out of life.

Option 4: Wonder why I only make 140k if I have 5 years of experience managing a team of financial consultants and presumably live in NY or Washington DC since the company's HQ is in one of those places I believe. Then tell this noob to have fun on his trip, and to stop by my office before leaving to pick up a letter of recommendation I'll write him for his upcoming job search in 6 months.

First of all, you're a ****head if you do option 3. Not just on a corporate level, on a human level. Because he wants to travel and has passions outside of accounting, you're willing to go out of your way to make his life harder? Says more about you than it says about him.

Secondly, 140k at mid management for big 4 after 12 years is not considered a point of pride. After 80k, your happiness level does not dramatically change.

At 80 hours a week on a 140k salary (gross), you're practically earning 30 dollars an hour. 25 year old kids at Google work from home at 35-40 hours a week on their own schedule and make 180k. On top of that, if you're doing auditing at 80 hours a week, i would literally just resign the next day.

Where are people getting the 80 hours thing from?

It was clearly explained that it's 60 hours with occasional weekend work when a client or new tax year work is needed and then it becomes 80.

Otherwise it's 60 hours a week, over about 46 working weeks.

$180,000 / 2760 = >$65/hour

Calling BS on miscers claiming to make more than that, or atleast the amount of miscers claiming to

Don't fire him, but tell him that he will need to resign. His job will not be guaranteed when he's finished. You didn't get a chance to 'travel the world' - neither did anyone else; being an adult is about having responsibilities.

Then ask him why it's so rare to hear about someone 'traveling the world' to find themselves or whatever. It's an unrealistic fantasy and he needs to grow up. This sort of things is what people can choose to do when they retire and have money.

With a job shortage - he'll be easily replaceable.

You didn't get time to spend in fantasy-land, so why should he?

Respect his stones but tell him the company doesn't put itself on hold for one person and that he will be replaced and have to reapply if he wants back on.
