Every now and then I hear stories about people exploring underwater caves and getting lost. They run out of air and die.

Mostly because dying on a mountain = you fall and get to fly for a few seconds before a quick death.

In a cave... the one dude in question was down there for like 30 hours crammed in a tight space unable to move. F that nonsense. I'll LDAR on my couch, not inside of a cave.

Yeah this. A lot of those Russian heights freaks do end up having their fall eventually. They are always recording or being recorded, so there is plenty of material.

you can see footage on youtube of the jump he made (not sure if the death footage is on there) - but basically he setup this intricate rope-pulley system to do a free-fall/swing type deal.

he performed it successfully IIRC.

he LEAVES the equipment up there, comes back like either a few days or week+ later and attempts it again. his equipment was subject to the elements, weather, wind, rain, etc. the system fails. he dies.

he was crazy for his climbing, but that was just stupid.

Or on a mountain you just get a helicopter rescue and foot a hefty fine/bill.

Meanwhile, no one is coming for you if you get lost in a cave until long after you are dead.

So, the dude that got stuck in the Natty Patty cave, how did he actually die? Did rescuers just seal him up and leave him there to die, or did they put him out of his misery?

Also, I'm with most of you on preferring mountain climbing over this insane chit. Get stuck on a mountain and all hope is gone, just throw yourself off a cliff. If you're caving, you can't even scratch your balls before you die.

He was stuck upside down for 30 hours which can kill you since it pools all your blood into your head

When you're upside down your heart can't pump blood properly (it's supposed to work with gravity forcing blood downward towards your feet or horizontally). He could have had a brain hemorrhage from all the blood pooling in his head. He could have had all the blood pooling cause issues with his lungs and suffocate slowly (he reported it was hard for him to breathe). Basically it just overloads your body beyond what it has evolved to do and it will slowly give out in a lot of ways. Humans weren't meant to be upside down for hours and hours and hours.

that being said i agree that its a hobby for idiots especially the underwater cave exploring

This, it's fun seeing parts of nature nobody else sees. If you're claustrophobic though you're phucked, I've been in a few caves where you have to temporarily go underwater to move forward because the walls are so narrow. It's neat though if that doesn't bother you.
