I have absolutely no idea what you mean.

I've seen several pages with a lot of statements - but an overwhelming lack of support from the literature.
How can you even make logical arguments without factual support? You can't.

Further, 'over dramatic'?
Excuse me, but this is a dramatic issue. There's absolutely no other area in medicine where there's such strong evidence relating a cause to death and disability.
Smoking is the #1 cause of preventable death in the US (and I wouldn't be surprised if it was worldwide as well).
Hundreds of thousands die every year in the US from lung cancer - for which over 90% is caused by smoking in both sexes.

I'm sorry if you think I'm being dramatic. It really is a crisis and thesourcesI'm posting help distinguish that.

How sad is it that the 3 top causes of death in the US (heart disease, cancer and COPD... then Accidents, and Stroke) are all directly correlated with smoking? It's embarrassing. And yes, the relative risk is >1.0 for all statistical evidence out there.

Ok I apologize

Clearly you have some kind of learning disability that inhibits you from processing information properly so i should take it easy on you. Now try going to page 1 and read from then on nice and slow. Maybe, just maybe, you'll find posts with real statistics and sources. Good luck

Once again you say "#1 cause of preventable deaths" is that supposed to mean in the health field? Cause all death is preventable in hindsight....

Excuse me I have a physical disability (deaf) not a learning disability.

Get off your high horse. Since when would anyone have a problem with another individual posting more sources to support a cohesive argument?
You take offense to this? That's completely counter-intuitive.

Top causes of preventable death - in according to the most common causes of death in the US (Heart disease, Cancer, COPD)
1. Smoking
2. Alcohol
3. Obesity
Though there's a debate that #2 and 3 have switched in the last couple years

Do I really need to elaborate? No, it's not firearms. No, it's not accidents.

I started smoking last year at 27 just out of curiosity. Wish I hadn't as my car smells like chit now. Other than that, I don't feel too bad about it. Makes you feel alert, relieves stress, etc.

I never smoke around children and if I'm ever near anyone and smoking I ask them if they mind.

Not everyone cares to live forever, but it is a burden on the overall taxpayer so definitely selfish. I just DGAF, I'm a contributing member of society and don't think it matters if I choose to kill myself slowly. (which only happens to about 30% of smokers) I do try my best to avoid being obnoxious with cigarettes at all costs.

And to anyone who say it isn't addicting, for the first 6 months I smoked on and off 5 a day, then a day or two off. Now I smoke about 10-18 a day and have felt rough withdrawals attempting to cut back. People who claim they aren't addicting haven't (and shouldn't) smoked enough.

Its not just about "shaving a few years off your life", smoking makes the quality of life very poor, healthwise. Source: my parents are smokers in their 60's, but I cannot remember a time since I was a child when my dad wouldn't literally have to hack up black stuff EVERY. SINGLE. MORNING. My mother has had lung issues (pneumonia/bronchitis/other ailments) a few times a year for the last decade. She's on a laundry list of medication for it and she struggles to breathe often. Any time she gets a fit of giggles at something funny on tv, she spends the following 15 minutes hacking and coughing. Chit is gross.

Smoking might seem innocent when you're in your 20's and 30's because you don't really feel any different physically but that chit catches up to you. Even if you don't get cancer, your health WILL suffer.

Most people who drink alcohol don't do so at the same rate smokers smoke. All smokers are daily smokers, not all drinkers are daily drinkers.

You think I give a fuk about shaving a couple of year off my life when I'm old, whithered and basically invisible? I wanna be dead by 70 anyway
This guy knows

Your life is over past 60 anyway. Everyday is basically emotional torment, you'll be struggling to find meaning in your life wishing you could still do the things you used to be able to do. You pretty much have 3 things to look forward to: Your weekly meeting with other old people, spending money on grandkids a couple times of year, and the price is right every morning.

Not to mention the physical pain that comes with being old.

Why do you think casinos are full of old people? They're looking for some excitement, they literally have no other outlet to get it either. It's not like they can have sex, go on some crazy adventure or party.

Smoking raises test levels.

High T males smoke cigarettes, fuk models, and get cancer.

A young bull and an old bull were standing atop a hill looking at a bunch of heifers in a field below.

The young bull says "Let's run down this hill and fuk one of those heifers."

The old bull replies "No. Let's walk down there, and fuk them all."

oh, and lets not forget, that;

-its expensive,
-you stink and stink up everything around you (house/clothes/car AND lower the resale value of your house and car.)
-It raises blood pressure
-ages your skin and face (as if white people don't already have a problem with that as it is.)
-yellows your nails eyes and teeth
-raises your insurance premiums
-gives you chitty cardiovascular endurance

....and thats just off the top of my head....

If you're over the age of 45 and smoke, then whatever, you grew up and probably got addicted to the stuff in an era where people were ignorant about the drug, but if you're in your 30's 20's and younger and are dependent on cigarettes you're a phuckin' dumbass, there's simply no nicer way to put it and its quite frankly, Darwins way of weeding you out of the gene pool.

Its posts like this that make me wish hospitals gave tours of their ICU's.

Yes, we're all going to die someday, but I wouldn't wish the diseases associated with smoking on my worst enemy its a horrible and miserable way to die.

I work in healthcare and here are some common complaints from people that have had lung cancer

It feels like pins and needles in your lungs everytime you take a breath

They're so short of breath that they say they feel like they're perpetually "drowning" and gasping for air. They need to be on O2 constantly just to feel "normal" and any kind of physical exertion (even if its as simple as sitting up in bed or walking to the bathroom) negates the benefits of the O2

and because they can't walk or move much they're bed ridden and coupled with their chitty dry skin from all the smoking they've done, they get bedsores and abscesses at a far easier rate than a normal old person.

and they cough so much they've herniated disks in their back.....

among other things.

no, and you will really be able to tell the difference in taste/feel if you're a smoker

for example, all modern cigarettes are "fire-safe", meaning the paper is coated in rings of glue so that if you stop smoking it, the paper won't burn and the cig goes out so you don't burn down your house when you fall asleep smoking

there are hundreds of gross ass industrial chemicals like that in a pack of cigs

hand rolls are nicer, literally like 7x cheaper in chicago, and encourage you to smoke less

--

i think people in this thread should appreciate adlerian's point a little more - a cigarette won't give you lung cancer, and a shot won't kill your liver

drinking a handle a day will kill your liver, smoking a pack a day will kill your lungs

having 2-5 beers every week or every other week won't kill you, and smoking every now and then won't kill you either. chits NOT that bad for you - the health risks are overstated

the medical issues that HEAVY SMOKERS deal with are debilitating, just like the medical issues that alcoholics deal with. just like the medical issues the guy who stuffs his face has to deal with.

and holy chit getting addicted to nicotine is a lot harder than people think. it's not like after you smoke a cigarette you're going to feel like death without another one. you can look forward to it just like you look forward to getting hammered on the weekends - doesn't mean you're addicted.
more bitter each year :-)

the rationalizations in this thread:
-I want to die at age X anyway. Life is not fun anymore.
-If I smoke less, It probably won't kill me, probably
-It's not that addictive
-Alcohol isnt that bad so smoking must not be that bad either

obviously to the smokers, you are not thinking about quitting but please dont get more guillible people to share your nasty habits.
