Never tip, what does excellent service mean? They bring me my food and drink? They bring me my correct order? If anything you should be tipping the cook because he's the one making the food or the dishwasher because they're preventing disease from spreading. The waiter is getting minimum wage paid either way. If you're expecting a minimum wage job to pay the bills, I got some bad news...

It didn't come about on some kind of fluke or by force.
My point is that people are now still tipping even for chitty service, just less. The point of it is to reward exceptional service and good behaviour.

I also haven't notice food being cheaper in the US compared to the UK, and tipping is optional in the UK. So the argument that they would have to increase the price of food doesn't make sense to me. All that is really happening is that the restaurant owner in the US is making more money because they don't have to pay their employees an acceptable wage and instead expect the customer to make up the difference.
