Anything that has a heavy playbook, ton of film studys, and quick-thinking in real time situation.

Most sports are eliminated in that category, aside from Football and probably MMA. To be competent at either would take intelligence

Football and MMA do not require intelligence they only really require quick reflexes, spatial awareness, and a certain skill set specific to the sport.

The REAL answer here is chess(since it's considered a sport) and tennis.

I think to coach and develop new techniques in a martial art, one needs to be quite brillant. A successful BJJ-professor needs insane intuitive knowledge of the human body to develop new techniques and adapt them to different pupils. I guess most martial arts would be similar.

I remember reading a study on professional chess players and their IQ. It seems chess players posess above average IQs, but few of them are truly geniusses. There were more high IQ-people among low ranking players, while none of the top players had any special IQs.

The researcher tried to explain this with high-level players having memorized most common plays and not really needing to think much anymore, while the low ranking chess players actually had t make up techniques on the fly.

So you're telling me memorizing a playbook and knowing what to do and where to be on a hot route doesn't require any intelligence? We're not talking backyard football, we're talking nfl where people spend all day watching film to spot tendencies in other's techniques. And if you want to talk about strategy like chess, do you think brady isn't watching film and reading scouting reports on opposing players to see which WR or route combination would be best to exploit their shortcomings? Just because some NFL players talk and interview like thugs doesn't meant they're all dumbasses

tennis and hockey and it's not even close.

brb making shot selections and changing it up in an instant based on subtle movements of a player across the court

hockey is just organized chaos, constantly have to be on your toes and planning one step ahead, looking for open passing lanes while avoiding getting knocked on your ass. it's like being a QB except you're doing it constantly and don't have a stoppage of play every 12 seconds or a whole line of people protecting you

probably golf. imagine taking the average person off the street and trying to teach them how to golf. most wouldnt even be able to get the ball in the hole with unlimited swings on a pro course.

For anyone saying MMA - do you think Chuck Liddell, Frank Mir or Cain Velasquez are "smart as fuk"? Not many people fight voluntarily, people fight because they have mouths to feed, no education or sell-able skills. It's a brutal and dangerous sport - they put their lives on the line every time they step in that ring.

Actually as a whole, baseball is probably the most tradie sport out there. Brb slow as fuk, spend more time drinking beer and eating microwavable dinner food than watching any action. major league pitchers have been pitching for 20+ years you dont think they can call their own game? its generally between the pitcher and catcher and the pitcher can shake off the catcher if he doesn't like it.
then you get to the complexity of pitching. 3-1 counts having different pitches, 2-2 count having different pitches, 1-2 count, etc.

the pitcher is solely trying to upset the hitters timing. so, using his brain to be ahead of the hitter as when to throw certain pitches

the hitter is then thinking like a pitcher as to what the pitcher will throw and you can be talking up to 10 pitches with various speeds and potentially opposite movement

e.g. a sinker breaking down and in to you or away from you or a slider breaking into you or away from you
that's not even broaching we can be talking about a 97 mph sinker that runs 8 inches to the side and 5 inches down. followed a long with an 82 mph slider breaking 2 feet the complete opposite direction.

lest we not forget hitters are doing the hardest thing in all of sports. you have those pitches with a bat with the barrel the same size diameter as the ball

You’re referring to skill here, not intelligence. That comes with proper technique and muscle memory development over a long period of time.

I’m going to add NFL QB as well. That playbook is massive and they have to be able to read defenses in 5 seconds and make audibles.

Why would I jump in the ring with them? I'd get beat the f*ck out of, but that doesn't mean they're more intelligent does it? Fighting is a spatial awareness, conditioning and training contest. There's a thing called Fight IQ and it's real - but it's a totally different thing from IQ in the intelligence sense.

I'm an amateur boxer, so I've taken punches to the face, won and lost bouts - so I know what it feels like to step in the ring. Throwing Elon Musk or Stephen Hawking into the ring with Cain Velasquez proves nothing.

lol OP didn't ask who's the most intelligent athletes, he asked what sport takes the most intelligence

Every sport is basically a skill/memory thing, but if we're talking how much stress it puts on your mind, that forces and effects your ability to think, I chose MMA/Boxing because you have to think while your mind is forcibly and actively shutting down.

Question is sport but I don't care. Position is QB in football. By that I specifically mean the top QBs who last more than a few years. You can skirt that rule if you are overly athletic but it doesn't last.

You cannot fight my logic because here are some examples of very successful QBs. You cannot tell me they are only successful due to freak physical condition.

Pretty uneducated post all around that I wasn't even going to acknowledge but below summarizes it pretty well. They have to know the strengths and weaknesses of each hitter. The sequences of pitches they're throwing. Location, situational awareness, what pitches cause the hitters to hit a grounder vs fly ball depending on who is on base. And yes pitchers generally call their own game.

I'm not even a huge baseball fan but I played in high school and understand how much goes into it. Pitching is very methodical as well as difficult.
