He was a cosmologist, not an inventor, so most the stuff he studied does not have true real world applications yet other than knowledge. He did do some ground breaking research with black holes, look up Hawking Radition. he is mainly famous for both overcoming his condition and being a popularizer of theoretical physics, quantum theory and relativity, also he was just insanley smart.

Ive read several of his books and he was very good at putting advanced concepts in more of laymans terms (they areworth a read if intrested in this stuff) which in of itself is not an easy task. He was by all accounts an amazing professor as well.

He was actually diagnosed when he was 21 with ALS. Should of only lived a few years more after diagnosis. So he was basically a badass being able to live with ALS for another 55 years. ;-)
