Equally important to salary is lifestyle and cost of living.

If your car payment is equal to a mortgage payment and you have mountains of credit card debt on top of student loan debt...you're doing it wrong.

The average person is struggling. So if you have a good job, be thankful and be proud. Thanks OP. Been saying this for years around here. On the misc if you don't make 100 k you're a bum, even though it's highly dependent upon where you reside In this country, your lifestyle, etc.

I’ve worked for two large public corporations in the last 3 years with unrestricted access to payroll data. The percentage of people making +$200k USD is about 0.001% of the 25,000 person cohort. None of them were younger than 35.

Obviously this excludes all the self employed underwater welders making $500k so the percentage is probably a little higher.

NB: neither company was financial services so the percentage might seem low to all the miscers who like to fraud that they work at Goldman Sachs.

Just started a new job last year and make about 45k a year. Combined househould is about 110k a year. We have 2 car payments, a mortgage and the usual utilities. I can still save/spend a $1000 a month and she can put away twice as much and we both have max contributiions into 401k.

we tend to compare ourselves to those around us instead of the bigger picture

if you are white collar and spend your time in silicon valley with a bunch of tech geeks who legit pull 200k+ then you'll want more

It isn't the wife that will getcha as much as the kids. If you want to have children then you need a woman that pulls a pretty good salary, or you need enough income that she can stay at home for at least a little while.

Childcare for infants and toddlers is very expensive. Seriously (at least in TX) read that full time childcare for an infant is more than sending your high school grad to state college for a year.

Many people can't afford to spend $800 to $1000 a month of their after tax income for the care of one child. Ouch if you have more than one. If your wife is making $30K care for one child can eat half her net. For many people that 40 hour job actually takes 50 hours of the week (commute/lunch hour/commute). Find yourself netting less than $5 an hour based on that amount of time. Plus gas/wear and tear on your car, your kid, etc.

Sadly a lot of people just have no choice and have to work and get whatever money they can. End up stuck with the lowest cost provider which leads to a lot of tragedy.

Nyc is a different ecosystem. You see a lot of generational wealth. Young kids get ushered into high level positions and do start out making far too much money.

I have a friend who just inherited about a 250m real estate portfolio. This was his portion of the total estate that was worth 1.2b. I’m able to make it on my own in nyc but these are types you shouldn’t be surprised to find in this city, they’re so far from the norm, they have access to far more resources than I could ever hope to obtain throughout my entire life.

i see where youre coming from but an inner city home in lets say northcote was 70k in the 80s, today youre looking at 1.6+ for that same home. Not even a doubled income can justify the 20x price increase in some suburbs. First home buyers have to move way out in the suburbs.

It is what it is. But I lol @ older people who chit on gen y when it was so easy to hold down 2-3jobs in thr 60s-80s due to labour ineffiency and strong local manufacturing. A 2 person labour job today was a 5 person job back then and all it took to get a job was to walk in a factory or a shop dressed ready to work and you were given a go.

Fiancee and I pull in about $7100 a month after taxes. We don't have to worry about anything and can buy what we need to do just fine. The misc is not the place to seek financial advice, since a lot of it is from frauding tards trying to get reps from other frauding tards.
