Disclaimer: As a millennial I'm a bit biased.

I think people can manage their finances better but the job market and standard of living is just not the same as it was 30+ years ago. There are all these extra things that people "should" buy these days that werent expected back then and this is not even the ridiculous price of housing or tuition that people are expected to get.
Also the population is just a lot more, baby boomer generation exploaded, and then they had kids so yeah prices are gunna go up because of that and less "attractive" jobs as a result. The baby boomer generation got really lucky with housing and inflation. they have a lot more money than they should...

so why shouldnt they help their kids? also this "pride" thing of not having your family help you is dumb imo. you're family. you're supposed to help each other. as long as youre trying your best to make a living for yourself (and not subjecting yourself to torture. i dont see anyone needing to resort to stripping (humility) or a job they hate) before they ask their family for help.
also material culture is dumb. if your parents have money they shouldnt be so superficial. help your kids out with food bills, rent, things they need. or to help them chase their dream: schooling, tools, etc.

all that being said i think there are a lot of things people can do to manage their finances better and not require their families help. this is for most people. in todays society i cant see it working for everyone.

Can't count the number of times my mom has said "this is it, I'm done paying for him after this" as we go get his truck out of impound for the millionth time, or pay his court fees.

Having college paid for by parents is such an odd concept to me, mainly because mine didn't pay anything for me when I became 18. Don't get me wrong, it was a struggle and a pain getting through and paying for myself, but it also taught me how to actually be accountable for what I buy. Now I make good money and I'm cheap as hell because of it still lol.

Yeah, I'm the idiot. We'd be so much better off if gold was still $20/oz., bread was $.07, and everyone got paid $1/day.

Oh wait, everything would be exactly the same except now it would only take 40K to be rich

This is why all my kids will start working at the age 9. We don't have coal mines anymore which is why they'll be installing solar panels 8 hours a day every summer... and all other seasons.

Gotto teach them kids early on to pull themselves up by the bootstraps. In fact I might just give them a single bootstrap and let them to fight to death over who gets the honor of trying to pull themselves up.

Jk, no kids crew wins again.

The fact is that if the US dollar was still backed by gold and bread still costs you $.07 you wouldn't be making what you make now; typical wages would be like $0.50 an hour.

Society would be the same, you would be just as rich as you are now but the number of dollars that constituted being rich would be different.
society would be the same if we had a currency pegged to gold? LMAO! Yea, just ignore the massive inflation we've had over the years, none of that would be possible with a gold-standard meaning your buying power would appreciate over time . Not to mention all the demand for dollar around the world that would be chasing after the dollar as all the other currencies are worthless fiat backed by imagination.

Wealth is determined by production. The more production, the wealthier the country as more production=more supply=cheaper prices=higher buying power

It's kinda hard to produce more when your savings take on average a 2%hit on inflation every year.

Not really. My six year old daughter is given the option to spend, save, or gift her money. She earns it now by getting the best color for behavior at school. She’s always getting bow tie behavior pictures with the principle. She always chooses to save her money for something down the road because once she runs out of her money, she doesn’t get anything extra. She’s saved over 100 dollars. Instilling financial knowledge on someone when they’re small goes a long way with how they treat money when they get it when they’re older.

Affluent parents nowadays don’t want their kid to have to struggle like they did when they were younger so they give them everything. This weakens them. They forgot that that struggle instilled in them the need for a better life. Instill that need in your children and see just how well they do financially.

We will make close to 200k this year and only pay 15k in taxes and you’re saying this and the government are what’s keeping people down? People are willfully ignorant. There are many, many ways shown on the internet for us to save and hide our money in tax sheltered areas( more so for our business oriented folks). Most people refuse to have the discipline to save and invest.

No, I hate paying taxes more than I'm pissed off by your wildly inaccurate posts. Speaking of, effective tax rate has only gone up like 5% the last 70 years, taxation is not why financial independence is declining *******, try again.

btw this graph is only through 2013, the tax rate will drop in 2018 to something comparable to 1948's tax rate.

The dumb comparison is comparing buying power of a gold-back currency from 105 years ago to the fiat current US dollar, to only claim that the dollar has lost 98% buying power with that analogy.

All these excuses here. Being an adult who's leaving home doesn't mean you need to own a house and a car straight away. You can move into a shared house, rent a flat, use public transport and what not.

It's disrespectful to cheapskate on your parents' funds. Loving parents care about their daughters/sons. Just because they don't let them turn into cucks doesn't mean they don't care about you. If these "adults" moved out of their parents way and became adults it's very likely their parents will have more money and they may save it for their children and then pass whatever they own to their children in the future.

It’s more like 190k.
37k(401k)
5k( FSA)
3k(pretax health contribution)
24k(standard deduction)
3.5k( qualified child care cost outside FSA)
Child care credit
=118.5k in taxable income which is right around 17k for taxes under the new tax reform law.

You're kidding right? Most fast food restaurants target to recruit high school students. Not only that, internships, community organizations usually put out ads to recruit high school / college students to help set their career foundation. It's their tax write-off.

Easy, because it sets an entitlement mentality that is absolutely DETRIMENTAL to their child's financial future.

No, it's not. They worked hard for that money. They know what it takes to make a dollar. It's NOT yours you lazy fewl.

Having a good financial understanding will either make or break a person in today's world. The world doesn't function on "free." And showing love =/= giving money to your kids.

Lmao this. Brb “own my own business and just closed a deal in my first home that I flipped for a profit!”

Stfu ******* I know for a fact that you got a small loan of 50 large from your parents to make it happen, which you haven’t even paid back yet (and you’re already bragging). Better be handing those bragging rights to Mom and Dad for having the capital and generosity to give you a hand out.

Like in Gran Torino.

I hope it happens to him - maybe he'll get off his pedestal.

FWIW - I won't be leaving anything to my kids other than my material items. All property will go to charitable causes - specifically creating/maintaining houses of worship. I MIGHT pay off any loans/debt the kids might have, but that's all dependent on if they're good/respectful people who actually care about me.

If they're snotty brats like my brothers who didn't do jack for my parents - they ain't getting a nickel.

That's cute and fine with me as long as they don't try to turn the state into their daddy too.
