They didnt put her anywhere, she is an adult who has responsibility over her own life.
If she has a mental illness then she belong in a hospital, if she cant afford it, her family is under no obligation to take on that financial burden.
Regardless of why she is there, it does not change the fact that an officer failed his duty and created collateral damage as a result of his ineptitude.

If they're suing so the department reviews training practices, that's fine. But you know that's not the case.

It was actually the guy with the knife that created the situation. Why doesnt the family sue his family?

I'm not defending the officers actions who took the ridiculous shot; it was stupid and he needs to be held accountable for his negligence. However, the officer barking those commands after the two went down is standard procedure. You have no idea if the perp is dead, severely wounded, or just playing dead. Those are all distinct possibilities that happen often. People can be shot numerous times and still present a threat. SoP is to order them to drop or move away from the weapon, roll over to their stomach, and be totally still so they can be cuffed. It doesn't matter how badly a perp is wounded they are ALWAYS cuffed after being neutralized.

To everyone asking "Why don't they shoot to wound?" or whatever other nonsense. By asking those questions is readily apparent you have little-to-no experience handling a firearm, much less in a high stress environment. That said, there are a lot of reasons why you don't shoot to wound. Here's just a couple reasons: 1. As adrenaline and cortisol flood your system in high stress situations your fine motor skills quickly deteriorate (this is a major reason why Special Forces and other high speed units shoot tens of thousands of rounds in training) which makes accurate fire even more difficult than it already is. 2. Often times shooting someone center mass numerous times doesn't stop them before they are able to wound or even kill the shooter/nearby persons so it makes little sense to attempt what is effectively a high stress trick shot. 3. There'd be a TREMENDOUS amount of departmental liability if your 'trick shot' missed and the perp was able to kill or wound someone as a result or heaven forbid you missed and hit an innocent bystander.

Lastly, some of you grossly overestimate the power of tazer/stun technology. The effect they have on people is a huge spectrum, not to mention they have a significant internal failure rate

Everybody wants to talk about having the highest trained, most professional, most qualified LEO's on the road. Don't nobody wanna talk about pouring millions of dollars into nearly every department so they can increase their hiring standards, increase training, increase man-power so there is time for said training, etc. Its 100% a problem that can be solved purely by money. Higher wages, higher standards, more training.


Unfortunately my agency is lowering the hiring standards to increase manpower and get more minorities on the force. (Srs).

Yup. When I got hired, our trainie success was sub-50%. Now we haven't had someone fail out in several years. I can't complain though in reference to training; they send us to a pretty good amount

I don't think you need to be a lawyer or a gunfighter to know 4 cops haphazardly unloading bullets in the general vicinity of a hostage is wrong.

Had the woman been a "person of importance" do you think they would have been unloading clips into her?

Me neither.
Actually the first officer who had the best shot, shot first the others were a result of contagious fire. Has a lot to do with training, adrenaline, muscle memory etc. The other officers probably were not even really aware they were firing as its on a subconcious level.

In the shooting i was involved in I swore up and down i only fired 2 rounds, turns out i fired 3. i have no recollection what so ever of the 3rd shot
