This is a good point and interesting thing to think about. There were 4, I think, different Mysterios so far in the MCU. The original, a copy cat hired by Johna Jameson, and a third who had actual teleportation powers. The fourth one was from the Ultimate Comics where "Mysterio" was just an android being controlled by the original Mysterio through an avatar program or something crazy like that.

So that being said, they have a lot of wiggle-room with the character and his abilities.

One Mysterio hated Spider-Man off the bat, the other hated Jonah Jameson and fought Spider-Man only because he was stopping him from hurting JJJ.
The third didn't give a chit about Spider-Man until Spider-Man shattered his f-cking leg thinking he was trying to beat up Black Cat.

So really they can do whatever the f-ck they want with his character and frankly they have a lot of leeway in almost every direction
