Fukishima is still pumping massive amounts of radiation into the Pacific Ocean daily, radiation levels on the west coast is rising
Way too premature to say fukishima isn’t bad, it’s still going on and chances are, we will never know how much cancer and death is causes

Shield radiation and also radiates a major food source
So instead of walking around in it, you get to eat it

Why did the plant manager, chief engineer, and the assistant chief engineer keep saying RMBK reactors cannot explode as if it was scientifically impossible?
The assistant chief engineer was in so much hardcore denial that he kept saying the reactor was still there even when he saw graphite on the ground himself. It was awesome when finally threw up in front of the other scumbags from radiation poisoning.
The plant manger and chief engineer were the biggest scumbags of all. The plant manger kept insisting the radiation level was nothing to worry about because it was 3.6 rotegens even after being told that the dosimeter used at the time maxes out at 3.6 rotegens.
The chief engineer kept denying the reactor exploded and sent that worker on a death sentience by forcing him to go look at the reactor with the soldier. The worker came back and confirmed the rector was gone but the chief engineer still forced the worker to believe it was still there.
I was finally glad when the government official doing the site investigation for Gorbachev saw through the plant manager’s and chief engineer’s bullchit that he ordered the soldier to take them fuking away. The government official was a bit harsh at the scientist that committed suicide at first like threatening to throw him out the helicopter but he finally came to his senses and believed everything the scientist had to say.

As I understood it - and going by the director's commentary after the show, that's how things were in the Soviet Union. "Oh, everything is great! No worries here at all in this workers paradise!" ...even though the reality of a situation might be pure shiit, they would always try to put a happy face on it for the government that literally controlled everything in their lives.
Then Chernobyl came along and put that to the ultimate test... "Graphite on the ground? Exposed reactor?? GTFO that's impossible!"
You could see the reality sinking in though when the politician got the phone call and they told him children were not allowed outside as far away as Germany..

The show's focus is on Jared Harris' character learning and explaining the science of how a RBMK reactor explodes when everyone thought it could only meltdown, along with how the socialist idea of not questioning things and "let the State worry about State affairs" attributed to the disaster.
This is a pretty good outline of all the corners cut that allowed the disaster:

Also, keep in mind this was a failing nation that had bankrupted itself in the space race, could barely afford to feed it's population, and was 5 years from collapsing politically.

Definitely worth a watch to have everything explained basically minute by minute. The amount of missteps and disregard for safety is astonishing.

--The proper plural form of the Latin adjective biceps is bicipites, a form not in general English use. Instead, biceps is used in both singular and plural (i.e., when referring to both arms). The form bicep [sic], although common even in professional contexts, is considered incorrect. (from Wikipedia)

It's because the RMBK reactors didn't explode. They were blown apart. They were blown apart because the cores were lowered into a cooling bath for a test. The resulting steam pressure built-up inside causing the explosion. Basically, they created a gigantic nuclear pressure cooker bomb.
I'm not blessed with riches, but I am rich with blessings.
Thank you, LORD, my God.

What is fundamentally different now?
Fukushima would likely have shut itself down safely (there are a ridiculous amount of redundant safety systems that cover essentially every possible scenario thought up equipment failure/operator error wise for all operating plants in use and a majority of them operate without any input needed) if it they had a method of getting fuel to the diesel generators that power the emergency cooling pumps. Mind you this was literally worst case scenario natural disaster that isn't anywhere near predictable. I can't honestly say I know the exact capacity of their fuel reserves but even at the time, they were designed to run without any need for outside help, etc for a semi-extended period of time. With everything being under water, transportation of fuel, etc being locked down from every angle, there was no way to keep the core cool.
Every plant (in the US at least) has since Fukushima built additional "oh fk" measures that extend that period of needing outside help significantly, spending millions and millions of dollars on equipment that ideally will never be touched other than for testing/maintenance, but at the ready, can provide additional support for flooding/earthquake/etc type disasters. Impossible to say that nothing will ever happen, chances are we are significantly better prepared for it. I won't even try going into whether or not they should've built a flood wall etc, that's all a matter of opinion and how effective it would've been can be dissected by both sides.
Chernobyl's reactor was a poor design to begin with because of it's characteristics and operation, combined with ignorantly stupid actions that had been turned down by multiple other plants prior to the dumb bastards at Chernobyl. There were so many people that outright failed at everything it's embarrassing. Lot of lessons learned from there,, noone intentionally pushes reactors anywhere near the limits for ****s and gigs any more.
