We should discourage mass shootings by showing more cctv and bodycams of the ******* shooter getting killed and publicly executing them if they surrender.

Also the problem with our mental illness diagnosis is that it’s reactive instead of proactive. Often people need help, don’t get therapy, no friends or family to talk to, maybe get some prescription drugs that make them even more homicidal, and then their mental illness festers over time until a breaking point.

Agree with pretty much everything.

The second point... it's going to be even harder for these people to probably get the appropriate diagnosis and care in the future, if they incorporate some of these red flag laws. There is already a stigma around seeking mental health services and appearing "weak", but if you start adding to it that a person may be punished by removing a Constitutional right, people will be even more afraid to say they have a problem.

Very good points. However, is there any viable way to make it hard as possible for homicidal maniacs to acquire guns while at the same time preserving the Second Amendment rights of Americans as a whole?

You could still have mass shootings with pistols though, like V-Tech which was the deadliest shooting until Vegas, I believe.

Besides that it's a matter of civilians being outgunned. The limitations placed on semi-auto rifles in California alone puts you at a tactical disadvantage in those situations...compared to a street criminal with pistol grips, high cap mags, and suppressors.

I totally get why you'd think reducing the number of these guns is good, but our unique volume of firearm ownership in the US means you just make it harder for law-abiding citizens to be on an equal playing field with criminals. And we legislate our rights away on the basis of, what amounts to, a fraction of a percentage of firearm homicides (aka legislating off spree shootings). When people bring up gun control from other countries....it's not even remotely relatable considering our gang/drug crime issues that they don't suffer from, as well as volume of firearms.

lol crazy, this is one I often post where an AR was used to defend a home:

Buying gun tmrw after watching that video lol. The one that really got me was the single black mom who had a handgun and then after those punks tried to break in she upgraded to an AR.

I think it boils down to:

-Should there be mandatory periodic mental health screening by Big Brother?
-What mental health issues are deemed potentially dangerous to the public?
-And do people with mental health issues have limited constitutional rights (equal protection clause)

Alternatively we could work to decrease mental health overall but that would be equally if not more difficult

It's really hard to say. Right now, there are some things in place. I don't think the general public knows it all that great, but mental health providers do, and maybe a fair amount of gun owners. But if you're involuntarily committed for mental health purposes, you no longer can purchase a gun. Your name gets added to the list so when they do the instant background check (which is done for the overwhelming majority of gun purchases, regardless of what some people/sources want to say) they get denied.

So there definitely are SOME measures in place, but the problem is in many cases people haven't accessed care at all, or haven't had anything to put them on the radar. Even some of the ones who have shown warning signs like making threats on line. That is happening thousands of times a year with tons of other people who don't end up being crazed shooters.

It's probably not a popular opinion at all, but I personally think that there is always going to be a certain number of crazy events like this regardless of access to weapons. I think that relatively speaking to other preventable deaths in the US, the gun problem really isn't that huge of a number. I think that 17,000 murders (all murders, not just guns) in a nation of at least 330 million is not some incredible amount; that is about .005% of the population. I think that creating sweeping legislation to impact 330,000,000+ people isn't really necessary, especially when that legislation is never enough. When it doesn't eliminate all murder, the answer is always more laws, then that doesn't do it so we need more, and so on.

I accept the fact that if I want to have gun rights, there are some inherent dangers with allowing anybody who is not me to have those same rights. I acknowledge that with my ability to drive, there are some inherent dangers if there is a single other vehicle allowed to be on the road. Same with any other right, privilege, or life luxury. I willingly accept those risks, because I believe that people should be allowed to do what they want to do so long as it's not hurting someone else, and if they do, they should lose those rights, privileges, and luxuries since they've proven themselves incapable of appropriately exercising them.

Edit- Sorry for the long ass response...

People think that these people are crazy, as in they can't think logically, but that's not true always, probably not even true most of the time.

I imagine most of them are sane, and simply just get off on going on a killing spree.

News covering this is a cause that has made it become such a common thing. Showing this on the news let's a person like this know that doing something like this is an option. It plants a seed.

The thing about this is it's not something you can prevent, that's why it's scary.

With 350 million or so people, it's just gonna keep happening... there will always be some twisted person with a gun.

People always look for solutions, and there really isn't much you can do to solve this problem when guns are so easy to access, and when people have so many freedoms. With freedom comes opportunity, with opportunity comes chance of using said freedom to do bad things.

The problem with mental health evaluations is that someone could be perfectly normal one second.. then snap in an absolute instant. Ever see the movie falling down?

Normal dude works as a nuclear engineer, gets off work and is now stuck in 5:00 rush hour traffic. Immediately gets fed up with everything, abandons his car and goes on a rampage through the city.

It doesn't help that the FBI is out there egging on retards to go on killing sprees. A lot of these incels are being turned into terrorists BY THE GOVERNMENT!
The 23-year-old man who was taken into FBI custody on Saturday after trying to detonate a fake bomb in Oklahoma City is mentally ill and was “aided and abetted” by the FBI, his family said in a statement to the Huffington Post.

Jerry Drake Varnell, who allegedly followed far-right anti-government groups and told the FBI he “wanted to start the next revolution,” is “a paranoid schizophrenic and is extremely susceptible to different types of ideology that normal people would deem immoral,” the statement said. His parents, Charlie and Melonie, wrote that a court in Oklahoma had found their son “mentally incompetent” and given them legal guardianship over him. “The FBI clearly knew that he was schizophrenic because they have gathered every ounce of information on him,” they said.

“I consider this entrapment,” Melonie Varnell told the Daily Beast earlier this week. “They got him to do this.”

What the public should be looking at is the fact that the FBI gave our son the means to make this happen. He has no job, no money, no vehicle, and no driver’s license, due to the fact that he is schizophrenic and we; his parents do everything we can possible to keep him safe and functional. The mental health system has consistently failed us due to the lack of establishments and health care coverage for a person like him. He has attended college and just enrolled in welding school. His medications allow him to be somewhat functional but he will never be completely functional in life. His brain does not work like a normal person and never will due to the nature of his mental illness.

This chit happens a ton. Federal Agents recruit people into these extremist groups and then aid them doing horrible chit.

Anyone remember that group of people that took over the National Park office in Oregon? They ended up getting off because more than 50% of them were federal agents from different agencies and it was ruled entrapment

Right next to this bar is a parking lot. The cops can hang there, out of the bustle and relatively out of sight, and respond as they did.

What if ARs were banned? I completely understand hunting, but there's no reason to own an AR outside of it being a hobby. Could pistols do the same damage as far as Killing a lot of people? I believe people should be able to to defend themselves so I'm against outright banning
Banning ARs would do jack chit. Handguns are responsible for 99% of gun crime and yes you could do just as much damage as far as killing with a handgun as an AR you just need to be closer.

An AR is just a platform. They make hunting rifles that are semi automatic just like ARs. ARs are popular because they are modular and easy to mix and match different parts to get what you're going for.

As far as it being feasible to quickly clean the streets, that is going to be a no. Criminals aren't going to turn in their guns and many will go even farther since they know that most law abiding citizens have turned in their guns.
