Nearly 20 years ago. He was one of the worst movers in strongman which is why he only won one big title and that was the year they had both deadlift and squat events.

Boxing is about footwork and he has none. His boxing "skills" can only be described as rank garbage. Here he is against a retired lightweight. 8 years on he's a lot heavier and slower.

[img]https://thumbs.gfycat.com/InsistentHeartyHog-size_restricted.gif[/img
I get the impression you don't particularly like Hall.

I mean, I dislike the guy myself. He is a bigmouthed, low class lout.

But Thor is an even worse human being. He is an arrogant diva and his entourage are annoying as hell, hanging off his every move. Stomping around in a tantrum when he can't get his own way. Hall has even said that inbetween competition events there have been times where there were no chairs left for gim to sit on, since Thor's fawning posse of sycophants had taken them all. He showed his true colours in WSM 2017 with his sour grapes and bullying tactics. I wouldn't mind so much but the role he plays in Game of Thrones is nothing special.

The strongman scene has always been somewhat of a brotherhood. The athletes share a common bond in that they are from humble backgrounds, struggling to make a mark. Most competitors get on and there is a great camaraderie within the scene.

Not so for that spoilt brat Thor.

Not so for that spoilt brat Thor.
I had no issue with him until recently where he's been quite petty about anyone trying to break his WR. A genetic freak came along and broke it by a kilo after 4 years which shouldn't come as a huge surprise to him but he was acting like it'd never be broken in his lifetime. Thor revealed the other day that other athletes wanted to go for more than 500kg at Giants Live in 2016 but Eddie and the organizers weren't going to allow it. They could only attempt 500 and could only do soafterhe had attempted it. He had to be the first. And after he pulled it there was a massive celebration, interview, he's kissing his wife, etc. while Benni and Jerry Pritchett had to wait over half an hour. Pritchett ended up tearing his hamstring on his 500 attempt. So the guy really should be grateful that "competition" was set up for him like it was. What he did was incredible but his pettiness and insecurity since then has diminished it.

As for Thor the entourage is almost entirely family. Watch the end of 2018 WSM. Wife, father, mother, sisters, brothers in law, grandfather, maybe a couple of friends, and his coach. Eddie talked it up like he's got 30 people there. Anyone in the crowd can buy those shirts from his website. WSM pays peanuts for the win, about $45k, so does anyone think he's flying 30 people over there for that?

Complaining about losing 2017 WSM wasn't a great look but I think it had more to do with personal issues he had going on along with the bell's palsy where he struggled to talk and eat properly. He thought Eddie's close friend and WSM organizer Colin Bryce was rigging the show to help Eddie and given he lost by a point that was going to mess with his head and I don't think Eddie had beaten him before. Of course they're milking this beef now because they've got a fight on.

Getting back to boxing I just find it laughable people are saying this guy spent time fighting on the streets or some BS story to talk up his chances. He's barely over 6ft fighting a guy who's 6'8". Given they both have no skills in the ring that is a massive advantage for Thor.

Eddies movement looks pretty slow. He should definitely work on speed and footwork plus fake out moves.

They're both starting from scratch. Both have zero skills. And on that basis the much taller man has the edge.

Eddie's ego won't allow him to come in much lighter which also plays into Thor's hands. He'll be slow, zero footwork, and after a flurry of wild haymakers trying to knock someone out over half a foot taller he'll quickly gas and struggle to keep his hands up to protect that massive head. This is going to be a joke but I'm giving the edge to height and reach over a walking chode with t-rex arms.

Eddie talks a good game but his goals have been all over the place.

Talked up his chances of hitting a 700+ bench and then Julius Maddox started breaking records and he went quiet.
Talked up his chances arm wrestling. Challenged fellow strongman Lalas who has experience and humbled him. Seems to have gone quiet.

Now it's boxing. Fortunately he's going up against someone without experience but physically he's at a massive disadvantage. Time will tell how that goes.

This does not impress me. Anyone can hit with some pop if they're throwing haymakers. You'll never have time to land one unless your opponent is a melon.

Yeah he is getting caught up basically with what he thinks will sell his social media status. Pick something and do it. Then again, he is getting paid 1 million for a half fake e-drama boxing match and I am not, so it's working out. It could drag him into ridicule status though if he keeps going like this.

As much as I'd like to back my home team, I am doubtful that Eddie could bring anything but brute strength and swagger to the match. HJB has the extra height and reach. Both used to do more cardio based sports in their youth (basketball for HJB and swimming for Eddie) but those lighter days are far behind them. I doubt either has much in the way of cardio or conditioning. Both will likely gas pretty fast, but in this fight I'm incline do go for the Mountain.

I'd rather see these men compete in the sport they're actually good at which is the real shame here — the money in strongman isn't great for anyone doing it full time so they're forced to create a sideshow.

The problem with Eddie is he talks too much sh*t. He keeps calling Thor's gym a "home gym" even though it's open to the public and Larry Wheels, Martins Licis, Stoltman brothers, etc. have all trained there. Eddie finally unveiled his home gym in his latest video.

Now compare it to this.

Edit: he's since added a Ghost monolift. Seriously go back and look at Ed's gym. He keeps embarrassing himself.

Also, I have just finished watching Eddie's latest YT video. He said he started learing boxing by himself. I understand that atm, he probably can't just go to a boxing gym but boxing is not one of those things you can just teach yourself. And re-learning to do stuff correctly is so much more difficult than learning it to do properly the first time. I think even just a trainer watching him on video and giving immediate feedback would be much better than nothing.

Also, doing 100 sit-ups a day. I am very old so remember even 30 years ago it was said sit-ups can be bad for your hips and back and that there are less injury-prone ways to train your core, even if you weigh much much less than Eddie does. I guess boxing is too old school for that....

8 years are along time and he already looked better in the match back than.
He was that immobile in strongmen because he had to bulk up way too much to keep up with giants like Thor and Shaw. Since he retired he is certainely lighter, more agile and more healthy.

I think whoever focusses on boxing more will win. Eddie certainely has the time to do so. Hafthor could as well, but it would be really sad if he stopped taking strongman seriously and ruined his shot on becoming the greatest of all time for some exhibition boxing match.

Lol I thought they were just speaking in metaphors when talking about knocking each other out. So they're actually talking about fighting each other for real? That just sounds ridiculous but I guess at the end of the day money talks, and it'll probably be the biggest payday of their careers so good for them.

I initially felt the same way but then I'm not walking around at 205kg. A few thoughts...

He trained for 6 months straight to pull 501 and is breathing hard and not looking comfortable so even if 2020 wasn't a total write-off he's definitely earned a break for the rest of the year at least.

Strongman pays peanuts so with the exception of 2018 where he won everything I doubt the prize money would be enough for him to break even without sponsors. There's no way he could turn down a million bucks.

Also being 30-40kg lighter in 2021 might turn out to be a blessing in disguise and actually prolong his career and keep him competitive in a light field with lighter events.

It made sense when his main rival was Brian Shaw but now that's no longer the case. If Kieliszkowski pulled 20kg more on the deadlift he would have won the Arnold this year dominating 4 out of 6 events. That would have cost Thor not only his 3rd straight ASC title but $50k. Kieliszkowski is 6'5" 330lbs while Thor came in at 440. This is a good opportunity to drop even more weight than usual in the off season.

He'll be 33 in 2022 if he decides to return. Big Z competed into his 40s.

And on that note...

Shaw: "When we get together and we can train together... obviously you can push me in the moving events and help me get better with those."
Mateusz: "I think first step to help you in moving events will be to close your kitchen."

Halfthor's boxing videos look pathetic. Hall's look pathetic too but more finely tuned. Being tall doesn't mean you'll win a boxing match, especially when the shorter guy has more experience. Hall wins this easily in the first round.

Honestly, probably whoever takes it more seriously. Vid I watch of Thor going one round looked horrible and eddy hitting pads doesn't mean anything, although Eddy probably has better speed and hand eye coordination.

These are all great points. Thor was walking around 20-30kg lighter before Arnold 2020 prep and looked real good. He looked like an absolute savage pulling that 501, but that obviously isn't sustainable.

I have watched their training/sparring footage and trained Muay Thai / mma for 7 years, so my thoughts (even though you probably don't care):

Eddie has better technique. He drops his hands when he throws non-straight punches, but he seems to have faster hands and actually defends better overall. Thor obviously has the reach advantage, but when he gets hit, he turns his head away and when he throws a punch, he closes his eyes. He also keeps his hands way too low and drops when he throws stuff. Those are not what you want to do. Neither guy knows how to "hide his pain"; when you get hit, you can't let it show that it bothered you.

Hafthor is going to have to drop a lot of size if he doesn't want to gas in 15 seconds. When Mariusz fought against Tim Sylvia, he was in the low 300s and was turning purple after only 2 minutes (and that is with training beforehand for years). Hafthor right now is over 400 lb and looked like he was gassing just walking around (and legit looked like **** from a health perspective). I have no idea what Eddie weighs right now, but my guess is the fight will basically be both guys throwing terrible technique for a minute at most and then gasping for breath with occasional haymakers. There is a reason most top-level heavyweights are around 230-240 and not cutting weight to make 265. Being that big kills your conditioning; muscle takes a ton of oxygen to fuel. Not making a prediction on winner because it's going to be sloppy and boring after the first minute or so

Shaw is my favorite strongman. Guy is such a legit nice guy

I remember that first fight where he turned purple. Sylvia underneath that jiggling flab was a tall, skinny guy so he clearly didn't have the same problem. Pudz was 6ft 300+ with abs.

However I think some people have either forgotten or aren't aware of how quickly Thor drops weight in theoffseason. Check the dates. That's just 3 months and he's got 18 months to prepare for this.

On to more important matters, I just watched Ed's latest video and it's obvious why Thor has been living rent free. His home gym has fk all plates in it. He must be going crazy.
