There's actually an obvious explanation here. One person collapses first, the remaining people stay with them to help them. They don't think "Sucks my wife died but I must continue or I'm next." My guess: undetectable poisoning of some kind. whether it was accidental, or murder. That would explain the sudden death of 3 humans, and 1 dog in the same spot.
I think the baby died first and the father was likely on his way, too. They might have realized the baby was not doing well so picked up their pace, adding to the danger they were already in. Heart rate goes up, perspiration increases, dehydration and heat exhaustion already setting in for the father, at least, as he is in his 40s and has been lugging a heavy infant for miles.

I think at some point the baby finally dies, they outright panic, stop moving out of hysteria and confusion and eventually expire.

You could be right. It's just these types of situations are counter intuitive, but not unbelievable. People underestimate how much mental confusion and even delerium people suffer when the body's temperature is in a danger zone. You ever have a fever dream? The mind does wacky **** when the brain is cooking.

You look like you're in shape. That guy did not. Even if he was relatively fit he was in his 40s with at least 20lbs on his back.

Who really knows.
The closer we approach the uncertainty of life's ending the more we wish to trade all of the things we have acquired in exchange for all of the things we have lost: wealth for youth, knowledge for fresh curiosity, resignation for hope. We'd trade our wisdom for new experiences, but it is wisdom that will teach us that at the end of the road the only new experience is death.

Very weird. I hike 10+ miles regularly and almost never drink anything until I finish, otherwise my stomach hurts and I get cramps.

A regularly hydrated person in at least OK shape should be able to handle an 8 mile hike without water in 100 degree weather no problem.

The amount of time was ballpark as it was a year ago and I did not record the time. I said 6 hours just to give an idea of the distance the hike is. As I said we took breaks and had plenty of food and water. The back pack carrier my son was in had a roof to protect him from the sun (most of the hike was in the shade due to the forest) lol at some miscers.

Only on the misc do regular conversations become attempted moot point "gotcha" moments.

It always amazes me how people don't cover up their skin when out in hot temperatures / sunny climates.

Yes, you'll look like a desert person but they do it because it works.
