To me, it's a legal argument, not a moral one. Laws should only protect people's rights, not enforce anyone's morality on another person. In this case, the argument is when does the zygote/fetus/child become a separate person from the mother with separate legal rights that warrant protection under the law. To me, that occurs at birth. Once the child is born, it's a separate person with it's own protection under the law. Late term abortion is barbaric and immoral (even evil if you view things that way), but that's not a justification for making it illegal unless you can substantiate the fetus as a separate person with it's own legal rights. This is a matter of opinion, so if, in your opinion, a two cell zygote is actually a full separate person from the mother with it's own legal rights, then Ok, that's a defensible opinion, but it's just an opinion. By the point of birth, 99.99% of all people agree, so that's the point I would set so that it's unambiguous for everyone.

You can still have a conscious experience while not feeling pain.

As I explained, my conditions for moral consideration are

1. If they have already achieved a state of consciousness

2. If they are expected to regain their consciousness after an interruption.


So in the case of a coma, the family is morally right to pull the plug once diagnoses (and maybe a period of time) show that the person is no longer able to regain their consciousness. If there is very reasonable expectation the person will, then the family should not pull the plug.


Another main reason I'm against abortion but only after a certain point is for practical/legal application. If we did an outright ban on ALL abortion then millions of women would still get them, just under dangerous and illegal methods. I see this causing far more harm than good. I don't think a world can exist where it's outright banned and women are jailed/held accountable for getting it done illegally.

My age is correct. I am 50. If you're asking if I'm OK with late term abortion myself, morally? No, it's a very barbaric practice, but morality is not a basis for law. Am I Ok with it being legal and letting people act upon their own morality? Sure. Unless you consider the fetus a completely separate legal person from the mother with it's own rights under the law, which I do not, then it's not murder and not something that should be legislated at all.

Fortunately, late term abortions are very rare, and almost always done because of a serious problem with either the mother or the fetus. That is why the whole debate about "partial birth abortions" 25 years ago or whatever was about the health of the mother exceptions. If you ban it but allow for the exception, you're not really banning anything. There are only a tiny handful of rogue OB-GYNs that will do elective late term abortions, but it doesn't amount to anything in the aggregate.
