Sounds like you have nobody to worry about but yourself, OP. That itself is massive freedom you don't appreciate until you're on the other side of it. The biggest upside to a mortgage honestly is level payments. Whatever the mortgage is today it will be the same 10, 20 years from now, which will feel like peanuts then. A downside to renting is seemingly every old apartment complex I see not in crappy areas has done some minor upgrades, then rebrand themselves as "luxury" apartments, jacking up the price. So that apartment that was $1000 in 2010 got some new carpet and appliances, some new paint and now it's $2200/month. That $1200 mortgage back in 2010 is still $1200 today.

So there's a tradeoff of more freedom vs. more security. You do you, boo. Not my job to proselytize.

Reminds me of how some places pull hard manipulation to keep people from going month to month. I only realized it years after I moved out of a high end apartment building a dozen years ago. "Sign a 12 month lease, get 3 additional monthsfree." They tell you a made up market rate, then tell you they have special prices going on right now that are lower than that [fictional] market rate. And hey on top of that you're signing a 15 month lease on the lowered price and they'll prorate those 3 free months into your rent. Between the "running a special right now" and prorating those "free months" into your rent you're getting a supposed $2500/month apartment for $1500/month. Feels like a relative bargain. In reality you're paying their target rate but you probably don't realize it at the time.

Then renewal time comes around. Sign a 2 yr lease, rent will remain the same. Sign a 1 yr lease it will go up $100. Go month-to-month and not only will it cost that fictional 'market rate,' but because you're going month-to-month it will be hundreds more. So in the end if you stay awhile, it will be $1500/month. Stay without signing a new lease, that'll be $2800/month buddy. REALLY strong-arming people into signing a new lease or moving out. I moved out and rented an old house walking distance from bars and other cool chit, from an old man that didn't raise the rent for the years I was there. Such a difference.Find an old man to rent from, not a corporate apartment complex.
