I know someone who loaned a close friend 15 000. He was going to pay her back when he sold the car he imported. Its been 10 years and he still owes her $15,000. He has a business, a house, and his wife makes 85k/year and they never paid my friend back in 10 years. Not even $1000.

Good luck bud, but you may as well have given it away for free. NEVER lend a friend money.

i dont get how one could own a home and somehow not have access to 12k. no savings? no stocks?

worst case, take out a line of credit before asking a friend. interest would be a drop in the bucket once he gets the check from the ins. company

Like everyone else is saying don't make it a loan.. If you truly have the means to help then do it. If not, and you can't afford it - well that's that.

Close to 10 years ago one of my closest friends was going through a rough time and needed some coin. My friends and I helped him out under the condition that he get his sh*t together.. Thankfully he did & is doing amazing right now - that trumps any sort of $$$ I could ever expect to have in return.

The money was paid back today, well before the agreed date.

Turns out: there is some justice in the world, and the broker accepted (limited) liability for not including the clause, and my friend received a nice insurance injection.

For me, this thread ended up being a lot more about "beware your insurance provider / broker" than "can you trust your friends or not", but I may have lucked out.
