Ugh. Don't get me started on vegemite. Saw a jar of that stuff in the foreign foods section of a grocery store I go to. Paid $8 for a tiny 4oz jar and threw it away it was so groce. It reminded me of that glue you use to seal pvc pipes.

As an expert on food in both America and UK I can clarify the situation with the following:


The quality of the ingredients is much, much higher in the UK. The regular butter like lurpak is sold in Whole Foods in America. That's really all you need to know. The dairy in the UK destroys American dairy. You can find high quality dairy in America but you'll have to pay through the nose for it.

Access to freshly baked bread and pastries in the UK destroys America. Extremely high quality. The produce is cheap and high quality in the UK.

The actual British cuisine is underrated in my opinion. it's a very cozy cuisine that is ideally suited to the climate. The pies and soups are nice and warming.

UK health and quality of food has deteriorated significantly since Walmart (Asda) and other American food chains have arrived. They are disgusting and destroying the health and quality of life by selling trash food for pennies.

I was in London last week and was just having this discussion with someone about how ignorant Americans are that constantly **** on British cuisine. It’s quite easy to tell that none of them have ever been there.

Yes, beans on toast is a stupid meal. With that said, not only is London a powerhouse for good food from all over the world, but as a commenter above me mentioned, pub food(British classics) are completely underrated. It’s perfect for the atmosphere, and the food is almost always well done. For example, the fries are almost always way better than most fries you get in the US. I had a great Sunday roast and then sticky toffee pudding that absolutely hit the spot. London also has amazing markets like borough, Camden, etc that have really good food stalls. Not to mention the cask ales sh*t on the beer you get in America.

London is up there with New York in terms of having a high volume of top tier food spots. And this is coming from someone that lives in one of the best food cities in the US and has traveled to over 10 countries, always putting an emphasis on trying the best restaurants in those places.

British food is absolutely disgraceful

Let's see, go to a nice steakhouse and have an amazing experience, or pay the same, for a "Sunday Roast?"

And the fries at numerous places are superior to the plain ones you see in the UK.

Face it, English Food sucks. It's filling, but bland and boring.

Pay the same? It was about $30 usd for the Sunday roast which included all of the sides. A steakhouse? You’re paying $100+

and the british aren't alone. You rarely hear about Russian cuisine either, unless you're talking about cabbage and beet stew. Its just not that appetizing to the rest of the world.

Huh? Traditional American food is pretty much just as ****. Let’s compare “New England”, which is essentially the most equivalent in size, weather, and culture to the UK. What are the traditional foods? Fried fish, clam chowder, corn muffins. This isn’t far off from “British food”.

Midwest food any better? Casseroles, corn dip. Mmmm, definitely up there with the powerhouse cuisines of the world.

If you want to talk about good American cuisines, you’d have to talk about a few of the southern climates like New Orleans(Cajun food) and Texas bbq. These are still heavily influenced by other cultures(French, west African), and even still, these states are so far away that it’s the equivalent of comparing the US to all of Europe(Greece is probably as far away from Uk as Texas is to New England).

The US and the UK are about the same. Both have mediocre but sometimes satisfying local cuisine, and tons of great foreign cuisine due to the diversity of the populations, especially in the big cities.

Right. I don't know why Brits get so defensive. The people who chit on their cuisine the most are Brits themselves. They constantly self deprecate their cuisine to the world.

There's a reason you never see a legit British restaurant opened in anywhere else in the world other than England. That chit would fold so fast with Chinese, Indian, Vietnamese, Jamaican, Mexican restaurants popping up all over.

I actually read that Fish and Chips isn't really British food, they don't even really like it, it was made especially for tourists.

Totally absurd nonsense-don't fall for that. It is the most popular food here, it is as British as tea, George Formby, Arthur Askey, Quality Street, 99 Flakes, deckchairs on the beach, Lord's Cricket Ground etc.
