CLIFFS:

Man, just say you didn't think about it and got too comfortable after giving the last 19 years of your life to the company. You're very sorry and won't do it again. You love your job and the brothers you work with etc...

Your Union rep and shop stewards need to get off their butts and help you out. I've seen people get let go for stupid things and some get upset and never come back, others fight it and return after 6 months to a year.

The Company is using you as an example, and as with every Union, the members generally have one consensus:

"They hate us", as in Management hates us.
