Clearly nobody here is a STEM brah if you even have to think twice about dropping a paltry $500.

OP do the following:

1. Post a pic of his bride.
2. Try returning the suit.
3. You spent $75 on his bachelor party. Pay the $500 if you can't return it.
4. Sue him.
Last year I spent more money on spilled liquor in bars than 99% of miscers make in a year.

Reply to all. "Nah bro, I am not paying for this suit. Where should I drop it off at?"

Reading that email his wife is making him send that.

yeah that's a very very sly way of covering your ass to bill people like this. dude sounds like an absolute twat. he's telling you to get measured, not to buy your own suit.. and the use of "we" when referring to discounts and all that could just as easily be interpreted as "my wife and i"

not sure there's a terribly professional way to handle this, i'd kinda be like "look dude you did not make it clear that i'd be paying, much less billing me blindly weeks after the fact. if you'd like the suit back, i'll bring it to you but i cannot budget $500+ with no warning." and pretty much never speak to him again

less about the money and more about the principle IMO. I'd rather pay $500 at best friends wedding with knowledge ahead of time, than pay $100 at someone else's wedding when they just drop the charge on me out of nowhere.

Dude is essentially charging his groomsmen for attending the wedding.

not sure about your financial situation or how many suits you have

he may be a shady fuk but there is no way out without this getting messy

the way he writes his emails and the way you make him out to be (stingy).. it appears as if he will not shy from retaliation

it is not worth losing a "friend" who will one day be of help to you

Afterall, he is a lawyer.

You can express your discontent civily in your email, but just fukin pay the man because he is a lawyer and he is your "friend" for now

he doesn't even sound like op's friend, more like some cheap ass acquaintance that OP doesn't trust. If the guy is cheap enough to split a 30 dollar bill 4 ways, of course he's not going to pay for your 500 dollar suit. OP needs to look out for himself for this situation.

Today I get an email from him...its a bill for the suit: about 500$.

I never wear suits and this thing will literally sit in my closet. His groomsmen gift? He covered the socks. Srs.

Like is this pretty fuked up or at all typical? I am kind of pissed, this guy has been cheap the whole time I've known him but this seems really low to me.

Edit: A few people think this is a troll, this is 100% legit, here is the gift I got along with the bill.

I would pay the $500, keep the suit, and go NC, think of it this way, it cost you $500 to truly know what kind of person he is.

I would pay him but make it clear that he owes you a big favour and that he should be more explicit in the future as perhaps not everyone can afford an unexpected $500 bill.
Since he's a lawyer that favour may be worth something to you in the future.

Just a way to avoid things getting messy.

From the email he sent you before the wedding, he was making plans for you all to contribute but he did not make this sufficiently clear. You can nitpick and cut ties or you can cough up and make it clear he owes you one.

the whole situation feels ultra cheap to me really. if he wants to have a wedding where everyone's wearing matching suits and socks, that's on him.. i don't think you should pay a dime, and especially not if he wasn't clear about the fact that you were expected to pay. pretty much the definition of cheap to me.

not to mention he basically equated $20 socks and a "lifetime of friendship"(puhleeease) to $500+ suits, dude ain't right
