I'm a bridesmaid in my brothers wedding later this year and yeah...the costs are insane. $200+ for dress, still need to pay for alterations, shoes, etc. Makeup and hair is $150. Hotel for the weekend will be around $600. Chipped in $100 for the bachelorette and will be hosting the bridal shower (I offered, and wanted to) which will probably cost me $500. On top of that, I am paying for their photography as their wedding gift (something I've done for all of my brothers weddings, because I'm a photographer and since I've been in all the weddings, I wanted to make sure I could still gift them with good photography lol) so thats a $3500 gift. I can afford all of this, but yeah, its definitely overwhelming to think that $5000 of my income this year will go to their wedding. Its family, and I love my brother so I don't mind....but yeah. Weddings are expensive as fuark to be involved in. When I got married, I covered all of the costs for my bridesmaids including hair/makeup, shoes and dress, hotel for the weekend, etc. Wish it was tradition for the couple to do that....ah well.

I bet either the venue for the wedding is somewhere free (like someone's private property) or the next thing the bride and groom will be asking for is all the wedding party to throw in on the renting of the hall too.

Also, he forgot to mention OP, it's also a BYOB party too...so bring your own alcohol...and if you wouldn't mind maybe 1 extra community bottle for the reception.

Right? It's like a total lack of consideration for the fact that it costs money to travel and go to an event a few states away. I don't expect him to pay for my travel of course, but this other stuff...

Jesus.

If this were my sister... it'd be a different story. My sister has been to bat to me financially when I was growing up (she's a lot older) and I would do the same for her within reason. We'd also never expect this type of financial commitment from one another for a wedding.

weddings are ridiculous.

As a family..me, my mom and dad spent around 6k just for my cousins wedding and we didn't even have to pay for flights or hotels.
I appreciate well thought out subtle trolling.

So they're like, cabins or something. 3-4 couples stay in each cabin I guess.

I'm not your typical opposed to marriage miscer but I would have a big issue with this

The fact that this is his second marriage just rubs me the wrong way completely

I would have declined the groomsmen spot from the start on that principle alone. Doubtful I would even make the trip unless it was for a super close friend or family member

weddings rustle my jimmies so hard.. i'm in two in the fall and i'm already up to $600 spent and i still need to give 2 wedding gifts, 2 bridal shower gifts and get hair and make up done and get a hotel room.

everyone always says "just wait until it's your turn" like umm no i would never ask ANYONE to spend that much money on me for a party!!

OP, you would be best off to just say "listen man, I would like to make it, but it just seems unlikely. I want to tell you this now to give you as much time as possible to maybe find a replacement. Sorry."

It's only going to continue to get more expensive. The fact that he asked you without setting any terms/conditions until AFTER you said yes is fuked up.

Seems like he may be pretty young (based on all the jobs listed for the other groomsmen).

lmao that's nothing to brag about. Ok at not spending a chit ton on a wedding or ring, but not having a proper honeymoon? Lmao you're gonna get cucked by someone who takes her to a Motel 8 and she considers that romantic because you're a cheap fuk.

If I were you i would still go, but just make up some emergency and stay the night of the actual wedding while paying your own hotel somewhere. Fuk all that extra chit. Sounds to me like they're getting some benefits at the expense of their guests (are you sure they're paying a part into the cabins?). Strong everything at him asking you to put it on your card too. Ive got a buddy who is mega close and only see once a year (I live in Europe and he lives in the US) just like this and he'd NEVER ask me to do any ridiculous chit like this.

EDIT: Slight alteration to something someone said above, say work is giving you a hard time about the days off so you're unsure if you can make it. Say if you can you'll attend as a normal guest if you can get the days off, but because of the uncertainty, you'll have to pull out as part of the wedding.

I'm letting everything percolate for a couple days.

This isn't helped by the fact that my wife's brother is trying to get married the day after and is pissed I won't be there for his wedding. I told him I've been committed and he was having none of it, saying it isn't fair because I was already in 1 wedding for this guy. Then I reminded him that he got married at a court house in secret for his 1st marriage which is why I wasn't in that one, and it ended in divorce and she's currently engaged to a lesbian. He's marrying a chick who already has a 7 year old and they just had a baby together a few months ago. He got pissy about it and his soon to be wife uploaded something to her FB about people being unsupportive of their wedding.

My "old" friend social life is a disaster atm. This is getting old.

- Brah-in-law getting married day after brah, but 2000 miles apart
- Brah-in-law wants me to be best man in his wedding (told me after he found out I was going to be out of state)
- Brah-in-law complains that brah is getting married 2nd time and I've already been in 1st
- Remind brah-in-law that his first marriage was a secret court house wedding no one told us about and it ended in a lesbian divorce
- Brah-in-law cuck and his fiance now angry
