If we're going to nitpick cogs vs value of the goods, might as well account for the tax deduction you get to claim for loss to theft as well.

Actually the owner made a profit. He can deduct the 100 as a loss (collect insurance on it) then he made $70 on his sale= up around 140 on this transaction

edit: if not insurance he lost 170 lol

In the case here. The owner is supposed to be at 170, but is instead at -30. That is losing 200 dollars. If you're not accounting for a difference of 200 dollars and only see -30, than the owner is (ignorantly) being charitable.

It's a poorly worded question , but it should be like this.

Show owner loses 100 = -100
Robber comes back and buys a good, gives shop owner back 100 = 0
Shop owner gives good to robber, what is the cost of goods sold??? Lets assume for simplicity's sake it was 50 = -50
Shop owner gives 30 change to the robber = -80

So at this point it is -80 if we assume cogs is 50

If the shop owner doesn't know that someone stole the 100, then he can't claim theft for insurance reasons. Only later would he discover that 100 is missing, but since he wouldn't know where is went, he can't recoup that back (they could just say he lost the 100 somewhere/dropped it on the ground/etc.)

I admit I goofed.
100-100+100 is different from 100-100 but I goofed and dropped the base 100 doing the latter when comparing profit vs the end result.

They were robbed of 100 dollars. End of story. The transaction afterwards has nothing to do with anything. Just confuses you.

Except he gives the shop owner back the 100 that he stole, so yes the transaction is relevant.

it doesn't matter where the money comes from. it is a regular sale in the ordinary course of business.

owner is out of $100 that was stolen from the register.

Imagine he traded that 100 dollar bill out for a fresh one. Does your logic still apply? No. It's a new 100 dollars.

Doesn't matter, he still lost $70 worth of goods because those are goods that he could've sold for $70 to someone if they hadn't been stolen.

Answer is $100 including goods.. The only reason so many people get it wrong, if that's even true, would be that there is a couple of right answers depending on if you count goods or just money etc, but they would only be accepting one of those answers as right.
