generally... the more physically challenging it is.. the less intelligence that is required.

Chess is a sport now? Lmfao...Chess while requiring a great deal of craft is no less of a board game than monopoly, or chutes and ladders.

Golf...Eh, that's debatable purely on the basis of the caddie having most of the shot input. Sure the golfer can veto a decision, but most of the technical work is done by the caddie himself. Elevation changes, Wind direction, breaks in the green, etc.

Combat sports require much more intelligence than given credit for. It's not the fact that you're throwing punches, or kicks (mma), It's more about what punch (or kick) to throw at what time. What feint to throw, what counter to throw. Am I pulling, then countering over the top? Am I throwing check hooks? And when I throw certain shots, how did my opponent react? Do I throw it again? etc.

NFL football...These guys are memorizing 100+ page playbooks. Not only do they need to know the play, they need to adjust accordingly. Receiver sees something in the secondary...Cuts off a route, or hits corner with a double move. (Adjusting). QB sees the safeties or linebackers cheating...he checks down changes the play and goes over the top. Linebackers read a play, and bust it up.

Hockey...don't know chit, so I can't really comment.

Point is...While these guys aren't rhodes scholars by any stretch of the imagination, when it comes to their jobs they're very intelligent...All bat and ball sports are played by millions and in some cases billions of people, and only a select few make it, and it's not just because they're big and strong. There are plenty of 6'6" grocery baggers, and 6'4" 330lbs bouncers.

If we are talking about sports that require you to sweat (real physical sports) than I would guess from the best ones out there, is either rugby, mma, equestrian jumping, archery, tennis, table tennis and field hockey.

Lol at people saying soccer, as a former soccer player, a son of a professional soccer player and having friends who are professional soccer players in a country where soccer is king, soccer guys are borderline retarded and end up broke in the end of a carrer. Soccer is cardio, it's marathon runners all over.
