I walked 12 blocks to school in 1st and 2nd grade while we lived in Detroit. I walked with two other kids, one the same age, and a 5th grader that lived 2 doors down, and the worst thing that happened to us was being chased by a dog.

You're 36 so that was quite a bit ago. Honestly, if you had kids, would you let your 6 or 7 year old walk alone in Detroit tomorrow? I'm not talking with a gang of kids, I mean alone. There aren't always a bunch of kids around to walk with your child. There's so many different scenarios people without kids don't think about.
