- complete feeling of isolation from society, family and God. Even with family making an effort to know you and spend time together this feeling “they dont know the real me”. A lot of times the root of this feeling is depression related. In high school I had no friends and sat by myself at lunch. Around 16-17 I remember one of the only times I opened up about it to my parents at the dinner table. It was one of those “hey son you dont seem that happy whats up?” conversations. I told them something to the effect i go to school every day, talk to no one, sit by myself at lunch and have no friends. This was when i was 120 pounds. My parents are good kind people and after i said it it was just silence. And really wtf could they do? I mean I could do things to help my kid because ive been there. But really wtf was gonna happen? My dad was going to say lets hit the weight room together? He didnt even know how to do a pushup with correct form. My moms schizophrenic its similar to having a disabled person for a parent she kind of reminds me of what i would expect an alcoholic invalid to act like. But anyway I have decided to limit my pity parties. I did not suffer the worst. Ive known 5 people in my life who truly suffered worse than me. One guys mom was murdered in front of him, another OD’d on heroin, another her mom had a brain aneurism went into a coma and she had to pull the plug, my brother was bullied so badly he didnt talk for the first 10 years of his life and later had to come to terms with being gay (srs), and finally someone i know is almost brain dead and in a near vegetative state.

I know all 5 of these people very, very well. So what I have learned is life is very hard. There are a lot of life analogies in the dark knight trilogy but none is more true than you will be faced with choices to become a dark thing devoid of light and feeling one of the demons making the world a worse place or the opposite a warrior that takes up the sword of good and tries to help people. What a great thing it must be to not ever be faced with any real adversity. To just go through life using people, focused on money, no conscience. But I think even for the psychopath that works only for their gain there is a reckoning. It may come in this life or the next but it will come. There will be a point in yourlife where God is everything or God is nothing. When you finally decide to be on his side heaven and hell will cease to be motivating factors. Ultimately you want to do what is right for the glory of God and to demonstrate your trust in him.

Peter 2:15
For it is God’s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish people

Micah 6:8
He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God

Here is a link to what Buddhists believe about Love:
https://teachingsofthebuddha.com/def...e-in-buddhism/

Love is the reason for everything. It is the meaning of life. Many people will spend their entire existence looking for some kind of meaning to all this when it was in front of their face the whole time they were just too scared to love.
I've been suicidal but I won't act on it for fear of the Catholic church teaching that suicide is a mortal sin which cannot be repented. Plus I have kids so I couldn't do that to them. Even if the Catholic church is full of BS, the fear of that will keep me alive, so it's good.

I like your Bible quotes. I feel like depression and anxiety are a result of a lack of spirituality and purpose. Achieving material goods only gives you happiness in the short term. If you're in a job you hate, crappy marriage, no friends and only post on the Misc for a social life, then you're most likely going to have depression if you have the brain chemicals that make you susceptible to depression.

Simple answer?

There is no such thing as a free lunch in life. There is always a cost...

In order to gain excess in any facet of life, will require a piece(s) of yourself. Each piece you will away, pushes you farther from the metaphorical light, and you never get it back (this is never stated in the unspoken contract of life).

Rich/successful/famous people who off themselves usually realize the juice wasn't worth the squeeze.

Could also be due to the fact "they have it all" No ambition to do anything anymore as they can't seem to keep themselves busy, if they have no drive or passion to do anything then they become that way.

Shows nothing lasts - satisfaction mainly; it's just the human curse, which keeps us grinding on, trying to solve new problems. Solve one problem, another takes its place and our attention, repeat til death.

Pessimistic, but that's the way it is and a lot of ppl appear to realise it, can see within this thread, the struggles and more primitive grind from centuries ago brought more purpose, a sense of belonging, more community values because of the shared need to stick together and solve a common problem/face a common danger.

Nowadays we can easily drift apart and live insular lives with our more unique, personal problems, especially with Internet consumption able to try and give us so much/information overload. Not that depression didn't exist in those days. The human struggle, story is v interesting, at least to me (have lifelong clinical depression)!

Not gonna read through 6 pages.

Its simple OP

When you have nothing or live modestly but strive towards excellence, wealth, or being the best at your industry you always have the ability to embrace the struggle and will have the mindset of "ok I'm depressed now but once I have a million in the bank" or "ok once I'm world champ" "once I win a grammy" I will feel better and have accomplished my dreams. I will no longer feel empty or depressed

Once people accomplish this dreams or goals and STILL feel depressed or empty the feeling transitions into hopelessness. They realize these things will not make them happy and many times commit suicide or even spiral out of control with drugs.

Once you realize life is about experiences and relationships and NOT about money and material goods the better off someone experiencing these issues will be

100% srs

I can make a million dollars but I've lost some very important people I truly love in my life. One of my fondest moments is being in hawaii with them. All of us together, happy, smiling, enjoying each others company.

I would kill to get that back for even a day man. That's what's important. Family, friends, experiences, meaningful relationships.

Because like the Buddha said, "desire is the root of unhappiness". And just because they appear to have everything required to be happy, they don't. And even if they do have a lot of material posessions, that happiness is temporary. Material objects can never bring you happiness. Happiness comes from within (very srs).

Easy OP

I have undiagnosed anxiety since i was a kid, had my first panic attack when I was 5, I remember every single second of it like it happened yesterday. I don’t know if it’s in my genes or the fact that I was raised in a war between bombs and electricity shortages, no food and water and not to mention the constant moving between houses.

When my anxiety gets really bad, it sends me spiralling into depression, you could bring me the 10/10 girl of my life and have her sit on my lap and I’d probably push her off. You could give me 10 billion dollars and it would only improve my mood by 0.1%

People that say “man up pu$$y” are right to some extent, because although I have this crippling general anxiety that happens for no specific reason, I cannot become a pu$$y and let it control what I do and what I don’t do on a day to day basis.

However, there have been times where I wished I had a few tranquillizers in my pocket that I could just take and sleep for a week, that is how much torture I was in, and it was all in my head.

Also anxiety and depression are extremely common, everyone ITT has legit chances of developing them later down the road. If you do, you will remember this post and you’ll be like “chit, now I get it”

Because mental illness like cancer is no respecter of someones position in society/their wealth etc etc. It is generally thought the causes of mental illness are genetic {it runs in families ,so regardless of someones income level they will always have the possibility they will become depressed/psychotic or have personality traits that make them prone to depression/difficulties with their emotions ,it's like how certain types of cancer can run in famillies }, mental illness can also be caused by environment, so it's possible if someone is successful in particular if they are famous and have little privacy a person is unable to handle the stress and that sets something off in them. Mental illness can also be caused by a traumatic childhood, or a traumatic event in adulthood. It has been proven that traumatic events especially in childhood can alter the structure of the brain and make someone more prone to depression/anxiety/in severe cases paranoia/psychosis or ptsd like symptoms, suicidal ideation/ problems regulating emotions. Also, it's possible a head injury can alter someones brain and make them prone to mental illness or personality changes. Anyone can have an accident regardless of how rich/successful you are. There was a famous olympic rower who got a head injury and became depressed and violent towards his wife, he needed some years of rehabilitation..

The other thing about mental illness is, especially when it is severe, the understanding by doctors and treatment for it is hit and miss , unlike most physical illness there are no objective tests that can be done while someone is alive. There is more stigma also, people are expected to pull themselves together 'to man up' or they get labeled as 'dangerous' , that stigma can affect recovery. You can be rich and can afford the best doctors and treatment around.... but unlike physical illness there is no cure. Thats why you hear about some celebrities who become mentally ill, they get all the best treatment but still end up killing themselves. As someone else mentioned suicide kills more young men than are killed in wars, natural disasters, accidents, physical illness.... Mental illness is basically a more dangerous killer than anything else and it can cause an enormous amount of damage to the ill person and their family and friends. It's shocking really that treatment /stigma and medical knowledge hasn't advanced all that much. People with it were locked away in asylums not so long ago for their entire lives.

This is sometimes why people who seemingly have it all, end up dying young . And we haven't even talked about the damaging links between recreational drugs and alcholol and mental illness.
I bang trannies.

Lurker here who won't post in threads but I knew a guy who had it all and gave it away to depression.

Owns a toy factory in china that ships to North America. Had a mansion in Hong Kong, a lambo advent, Ferrari f430 asetto Corsa, and a company valued at 50 million USD.

Over stressed from working and divorced his wife of 20 years.

Decided to drink at local bars in Hong Kong and eventually died from his dead liver.

Money isn't everything....

If all you ever care about is stuff and then get all those things you will never be happy. You have to want to do something in life. You know, a man's reach should exceed his grasp sort of thing. I personally just like spending time with my family and friends when I'm not doing engineering stuff. That matters more to me than having a big house or a expensive car. All that sh*t is mostly to impress people that don't gve a sh*t about you. It's stupid.

Jim Carrey said, "I think everybody should get rich and famous and do everything they ever dreamed of so they can see that it’s not the answer”

I'm nowhere near as rich as Jim Carrey--he's not an idol of mine--but I've felt it myself and I think he's dead on with this.

Money itself doesn't make you happy; it's the option to do what you want, and maybe have some kind of impact on the world. Spending your life chasing a dream, only to realize it wasn't the right path can be discouraging at the least.

Think of all the people that chase their "dream": theater, kids, finance, technology, sports management, white-picket fence, etc. They end up with in a debt hole with only a flimsy spork to dig themselves out. But at least they're doing what they love! Right? Maybe a nice new SUV will make it better?

Not saying to never pursue those things, but if that's where your self-worth lies, it's gonna get rough eventually.

If true character is measured by heart, not achievements, why do we care so much about trophies?

If fame brings meaning and peace, why are the famous so dysfunctional and insecure?

Why is beauty so coveted if it is the first thing to fade?

If the secret to joy is contentment, why do we endlessly amass treasures?

Why do we fight to become the source of envy when we know envy kills?
