There's one more thing, "ryo-te" and "moro-te" are both mean "two hands" or "both hands". "morote" has a quaint feel and also often means something like "bottom of one's heart". The word is usually used like, "morote wo agete dai-sansei" (="I agree from the bottom of my heart")

It was my first time ever in the top 10 (in the world) ring for my division. Needless to say, I did not go to win, I was just happy to be there lol.
There were probably like ~30 girls who qualified for the "top 10", which isn't really like just 10, because people like me slide into the "top 10" by placing 1st at Districts lol.
Most of the other girls qualified by actually competing and dominating in their own regions by earning enough points to qualify for the actual top 10 in the world.
I slid in there like a thirsty 20-year old boy into some instagram model's DMs. lololol

Thanks for joining both, brothers!

Eighteen years, it's awesome!! *bow*

Of course, it counts! Here in Japan, wrestling is one of the most popular competitive sports. In fact, Japan's women's wrestling team won 4 gold medals and 1 silver medal at 2016 Olympics (Rio de Janeiro) . while Men only won 2 silver. So women are getting stronger than men as in any modern Japanese life, LOL.

Hey thanks for the follow-up, brother. My respect, actually being given the chance in the international competitions is no small feat, I must say it's awesome and amazing. It's a great thing, what you are doing. As a coach, teaching the next generation not only the technique but also sharing your experience as an vanguard to them. My hats off to you. *bow*

By making this thread, I was hoping to create a place with an atmosphere of kinda athletic club camp I used to join when I was a teen, for friends here who also want to share their life and Martial Arts. I still love those moments as the fondest memories of all my life and I thought it would be good for you too. I'll be 60 this summer and I don't know how long I could keep doing this but I'll do try as long as I can.

About this thread, it seems it's time for me to close up. Again thank you everybody for posting here. Good luck and I'm rooting for every one of you!!!

See you when I see you. *bow*

I did karate from when I was 6 untill I was about 12.
I was very talented and did competitions in Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, France.
I quit because of a lack of ambition/ father figure to tell me to keep doing things I didn't like for the greater good.

From 14 untill around 19 I just focused on becoming big and strong but I was also lazy and unathletic.
At the same time I smoked a lot, started doing drugs & actually selling drugs to make money and it got me into a whole lot of trouble (example I got robbed by 5 men with machetes at gunpoint because of some "supposed drug deal")

Around 19 years old I wondered wtf was wrong with me and I was sick of being this lazy fat guy who just looked big and didn't know how to fight.

From when I was 19 years old untill around 20 I trained muay thai for anything between 3 to 6 hours a day 6x/ week.
I flunked out of college that time so I had nothing else to do. My ambition was to become pro.

I went through 3 standing heavybags (obliterated the poles that hold the bag lol) and my midkicks were the hardest my coaches have ever seen for my weight (I went to a Yodsanklai seminar and mine were comparable).

In 1 year my coaches thought I was ready for fights so they set me up. I won or drawed every fight age 21 till 23 even practically breaking someone's arm once with a midkick.
All went well untill I was diagnosed with a rare form of Myositis ossificans in my shins @ 24. I ignored it & it became really, really bad (my blood pressure went up and my feet were constantly numb/ purple/ cold in my last months fighting).
My stamina was horrible, blood pressure through the roof and my last 2 fights I got TKO'd & KO'd.

Doctor denied me from doing competitions so I went through a lot of procedures & bullchit regarding my shins. They won't ever be the same.

The main issue was that much exercise & damage from kicks in such a short time span (I was never that active in my childhood/ teenage years so my bones were not conditioned at all) and also I ran a lot; sometimes I went for 20-30 mile runs with excruciating pain just blaming it on shin splints. If I just did 2 more fights I would have been pro / top-class (don't know how they do muay thai rankings in America)

Next year I will be taking up boxing; but it's sad that my strongest weapon (legkicks) has been taken away from me.
Occasionally I throw a full power midkick or 2 at the heavybag just to see if I still got it; but times of fully kicking someone's knee are over for me.

I'll start a new chapter with boxing & ultrarunning (hopefully) when this Corona chit is done with.

Fun fact: I never liked fighting. I never liked the feeling and I never liked the adrenaline. I did it just as a test to myself and to see if I was an undisciplined pussy or not.
It was my self made initiation into manhood (huge fan of king-warrior-magician-lover)

Pic for your time: me on the right headkicking a (very talented) dude.

You mirin dat calve muscle huh?

Nah, I tried to get back into BJJ like a year ago - but unfortunately the desire just wasn't there enough (to show up to class regularly).

There are a few options available for Boxing and Muay Thai (there's one Muay Thai place, I just found out recently, is practically right down the street from me - some hole in the wall place that I have no clue how good it is). Most of them are quite pricey though. There is a rec center where Buster Douglas coaches, but that appears to only be a few months out of the year. Part of me would like to get in and do a few amateur boxing matches (boy does the realization that you would be in the "Masters" Division if you compete sucks).

Most likely I won't though. As I've mentioned earlier in this thread, I like to just hit the gym and do my own thing on my own schedule.

Like many in my cohort, I watched The Karate Kid…and became fascinated with karate. I started at 8 in a style derived from Okinawan, but I think changed/adapted by the instructor with other styles and things he learned in the military. I took that until 12, when I changed to TKD because the school had dissolved. 3-4 years of that, and then back to karate for another two years after my original karate instructor started a new practice.

I fell out of practice when football and track took over my time…became a football captain, and threw shot put and discus.

In college, though…martial arts faded for me. They came back in my late twenties when I decided to join a nearby Shotokan school. Two years of that, and on a whim I went to check out a Judo class…which literally swept me off me feet

I've been practicing Judo and bjj on and off for 13 years…currently nothing due to the lockdown

I plan on making a throwing dummy soon, and will be focusing on Judo for the next few years in hopes of achieving shodan… I'm working on nikyu. I mostly need points from tournaments and seminars. I'm blue in bjj, and currently not practicing although I want to go back as time allows. I will probably try to start attending open mats more along with Judo whenever everything starts up again and my back is ready (currently healing from sciatica…idk, several weeks if not a couple of months away from being healthy enough to practice).

I did take fencing in college, and would love to restart that at some point…or perhaps kendo. I love archery and throwing knives and tomahawks. If I had more time I would love to study many other martial arts…get back I to karate as well and perhaps traditional jiu-jitsu. I would enjoy all of it in which I could participate.

I forgot I was in this!

When quarantine is done I wouldn’t mind getting into some boxing.

As long as you remember what made you start the new challenge there always would be a chance.

Unlike me (this tired old man) you still have a long bright and fulfilling future ahead.

Welcome back my friend. *bow*

Did Tae Kwon Do when I was a little kid (didn't like it all).

Later did Wing Chun for a while.

Later trained at an MMA gym.

Have been out of martial arts for a long time now, for various reasons, but part of me really wants to get back into some BJJ and possibly some Muay Thai or boxing. If I started I'm not sure I'd be motivated enough to show up to class consistently though. The biggest reason - I love just working out on my own, because you can do that on your own time/schedule. I like to go straight after work, knock it out, and then still have a decent amount of time left in the evening to chill (and get to bed at a decent time as I generally wake up around 5 am). Whereas if you take classes, then obviously you have to base it around their schedule.

Anyone here practice something along the meditative aspect of the arts such as Tai chi or Qigong? I’ve always been interested in these arts and I feel like this could help me a lot now to relax the mind .

2nd degree black in Chito-Ryu (karate), and red stripe (blue) in TKD…haven't done a thing since my mid 20's.

I missed it for a few years in my mid 30's, but never got back into it.

Never stopped skateboarding though LOL…weird, bi-polar swing in interests…

I'm mostly Irish and Scottish, and English. Further back in my lineage is Comanche and Cherokee…but pretty far back. I have a lot of interests, but I'm nothing special. I have a reasonably good harai goshi for my level, which is my pet technique.

I've hurt my back before…and it's a reinjured from years ago. I'm hoping to get back to pain free…I think I will based on how it's going, but it's a slow injury to heal. I suppose it's more fortunate that it coincides with this social distancing as the dojo is closed.

I do see myself continuing with martial arts indefinitely, though. My sensei is in his 60's and can still beat me…he's real quick. He's the only guy I know who can standing choke people reliably in randori lol…I think it's because he is a karate guy first. He does Japanese style jiu-jitsu as well…from what he's shown in Judo…kind of like Aikido but pretty rough. He does kendo too…which is amazing to me to see those guys go at it.

I think to progress in Judo I just need to focus on it, though. At least for a few more years. I'm years away from shodan and would like to achieve it while I'm still alive lol.
