And definitely. Always rent a convertible mustang, BMW, camero, or something like that when I travel.

I dont know your current situation but if youre looking to invest simple, id follow the boglehead approach of low cost index funds:
VTSAX - US stock market
VTIAX - International stock market
VBTLX- US Bond market
Set it and forget it..

Put the two together including overlap and you are left with maybe 1 out of 20 that are any good. The problem is by the time you are able to choose the 1 good from the 19 trash you already are good enough to do it yourself.
I am of the opinion that you should just go all US equity. Start with VTSAX. Then as you learn start adding the highest rated sector index funds that don't respond the same way to market events.
Bonds have poor returns and when you look at the standard deviation and how they move from market events they don't have much value.
Foreign markets use to move a lot differently, but everything is so tied together there really isn't a point. The US Companies that make up the bulk of VTSAX are all international so you are getting covered there.

I don't make a ton of money but I've always been good about maxing out my 401k, investing a few hundred per month, and tucking the rest away into savings. I've got much more than 1k in the bank but also carry 45k in student debt.

Morningstar should be your best friend when it comes to creating your portfolio. IF you don't know what you are doing and don't care to learn just drop it into a low cost total market etf and call it good. You will do fine but you will be leaving a bit on the table.
So let's say you want to learn and build a good portfolio.
First you need to define RISK. Which is portfolio COVARIANCE at a given rate of return. You want your COVARIANCE as low as possible for whatever rate of return you are seeking to achieve. Anything else and you are taking extra risk or leaving returns on the table.
first sign up for the 14 day trial of Morningstar. Then what you want to do is search for 4 or 5 star ETFs in each of the main market categories.
Consumer Goods, Raw Materials, Defense, Tech, Healthcare, Real Estate, Hospitality....
Then you can put various combinations and portfolio weights together seeking to maximize your return at the risk you are willing to tolerate.
