I was scrolling through wiki randomly and read that China's carriers are equivalent to the USA's Kitty Hawk carrier of the 60s. Crazy how far ahead the USA is vs everyone else.

I was surprised Britain used to have over 41 carriers but now decommissioned. Only have 2 now.

Their other priority has been to develop systems that can deny the US any strategic advantages. The US Military is heavily dependent on its satellite networks for communications, datalinks, & GPS and China has already shown it has effective means to disable our networks from the ground. Carriers are also put at risk with Long Range Anti-Ship Missiles, Maneuverable Ballistic Missiles launched from the mainland, and a big host of quiet submarines.
This is the defensive bubble they've created around themselves, now they are pursuing military modernization that will allow them to project power around the globe. This is something the US has a strategic advantage in, but it won't last forever. So Aircraft Carriers/Amphibs, Transports, Supply Depots, etc, things that will allow them to take the fight somewhere other than their immediate area.
People are tunnel-visioned on "Today's China", without looking at the bigger trend of what track they are on, how fast they are going, and where they are headed.
So while many may discount the information provided in this thread because they truly don't know any better, for anyone that's taking note, it's pretty alarming and may not set in until a good 5-10 years from now when there is more to show for it and the media is highlighting that for them to digest.

If China and the US got into a war the winner is the choice of the US. If we had the spirit we had during WWII and let our generals win the war in favor of the US. However, I'm afraid it would be a Vietnam scene where the politicians will run the war and will use it to score political points while US citizens protest our moral correctness in military actions. China would capitalize on that.

Concerning, the build up continues.
Chinese Increasing Nuclear Submarine Shipyard Capacity

As China pushes to become a blue-water power, nuclear-powered submarines are critically important to Beijing’s plan. Historically the Chinese Navy’s (PLAN) nuclear-powered submarine fleet has been constrained by its limited construction capacity. There is only one shipyard in the country up to the task. But that yard has been undergoing a massive enlargement. And now, recent satellite imagery suggests an additional capacity expansion.
China’s nuclear-powered submarine fleet was already expected to get much larger in the coming years. This latest development suggests that China could pump out submarines at an even greater rate.
Just how many nuclear submarines China will build over the next ten years is a hot topic. The Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI) recently forecast China’s submarine fleet to grow by six nuclear-powered attack submarines by 2030. Other observers, such as retired Capt. James Fanell who was Director of Intelligence and Information Operations for the U.S. Navy’s Pacific Fleet, place their estimates even higher. What seems clear is that the number of nuclear submarines will increase.
Analysis of commercial satellite imagery reveals work on a new construction hall at the Bohai Shipyard at Huludao. The building appears to be essentially identical to the one built there in 2015. That is widely believed to be for the construction of a new generation of nuclear submarines.
The new hall is estimated to be large enough to allow construction of two submarines simultaneously. When added to the other hall recently constructed, that would allow four boats to be in the sheds at once. And there is another much older construction hall at the other end of the site which, if still active, could add another. So four or five boats at once.
The nuclear submarines include both ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs) and attack submarines (SSN). All nuclear submarines are built at the Bohai shipyard, so its capacity will be a major factor in the total fleet strength.
China’s naval growth has not gone unnoticed in Washington. In response, the U.S. Navy will have to adjust. Outlining the proposed Battle Force 2045, Defense Secretary Mark Esper said that the U.S. must begin building three Virginia Class submarines per year as soon as possible. This would build a “larger and more capable submarine force”. The proposed force will include 70-80 attack submarines, described as “the most survival strike platform in a future great powers conflict”.
There are three new classes of submarine which might be built at Bohai. The most straightforward is the Type-09IIIB (also written Type-093B). This is an iterative improvement on the current Type-09IIIA Shang-II Class submarine. The main improvement expected is the inclusion of cruise missiles in vertical launch tubes. These will allow it to carry an increased load of cruise missiles, improving its strategic strike capability. The YJ-18 cruise missiles are generally analogous to the Russian Kalibr family of missiles. China already operates Kalibr from some of its submarines.
More advanced than the Type-09III family is the next-generation Type-09V Tang Class (aka Type -095). This is expected to be everything the Type-09IIIB is, and also stealthier.
The third projected type is a next-generation ballistic missile submarine (SSBN). the Type-09VI (Type-096) will follow the current generation Type-09IV Jin Class (Type-094). They are expected to augment the six Type-09IV instead of replacing them, leading to a net increase in China’s SSBN fleet. The 2020 China Military Power Report to Congress projected an increase to eight SSBNs by 2030.
At this stage we are still learning new details of the Bohai shipyard expansion. We have yet to see any submarines roll out of the new halls. And it is possible that the newest shed may be intended for some other purpose. But the takeaway is that China is transforming its submarine construction capabilities. The work at Huludao will remove the physical constraint which previously limited their nuclear navy.https://news.usni.org/2020/10/12/chi...ity#more-80665

Video Of Chinese Missile Carrier Jet Hauling What Appears To Be A Hypersonic Weapon Emerges
Video has emerged out of China showing what appears to be an H-6N missile carrier aircraft with a massive weapon slung underneath it. The unique wedge-shaped profile of the missile's forward section points to the possibility that the missile is a hypersonic weapon system. In particular, the form factor looks similar to the one found on China's ground-launched DF-17 hypersonic weapon, which uses a ballistic missile to boost an unpowered DF-ZF hypersonic boost-glide vehicle to a velocity well over Mach 5 before the vehicle continues on maneuvering path through the atmosphere to its target. You can read our previous post on the DF-17 here.
China's work on air-launched adaptations of their ground-launched ballistic missiles is not necessarily new. An air-launched DF-21D anti-ship ballistic missile is thought to have been in development for some time. The pursuit of an air-launched hypersonic boost-glide vehicle weapon by China should be expected, as well, but this could be the first time we are actually seeing it.

The four-day plenum in Beijing wraps up with a statement that says it has entered a period of ‘strategic opportunity’ for development
Plans for next 15 years highlight key role for technological development and importance of boosting domestic markets
A key policy meeting concluded on Thursday with a statement that China would not let external pressures sway it from becoming a great power.
It also set a new goal to turn the People‘s Liberation Army (PLA) into a modern military force by 2027, by which time, analysts say, China aims to build an army on par with that of the US.
The four-day plenum at Beijing’s Jingxi Hotel concluded with a televised ceremony at which the 360-plus attendees did not wear masks – a sign of confidence that the country has tamed Covid-19.
The communique issued after the ceremony said China must seize the opportunity presented by the current global upheaval to be in the front row of great powers.
The confident statement came just days before a messy and chaotic US presidential election approaching its final stage.
While highlighting the international uncertainties and risks, the communique said China would be “steady in terms of our strategies and we will focus on getting our work done”.
The plenum has been under close scrutiny as observers watch for signs about how the pandemic and the rising pressure from the West might affect Xi Jinping’s leadership as the Communist Party puts together road maps for the country’s medium and long-term development.
Two blueprints were discussed during the meeting, the 14th five-year plan and the development goals for 2035.
Among the development goals, the communique said, is the construction of a fully modern army by 2027, which marks the centennial of the founding of the PLA.
Hong Kong military analyst Song Zhongping said the new centennial goal can be interpreted as “putting the PLA as a leading modern force in the world, one that can be on par with the US army”.
Junfei Wu, deputy head of Hong Kong think tank Tianda Institute said this is the first time the Chinese leaders have included the military in such development goals. He said the goal was primarily targeted at Taiwan.
“Basically, the target is to build PLA’s capability to match the US army by 2027, so It can effectively deter interference by the US army around the Taiwan Strait.”
Xi has set two centennial goals before, to turn China into a “moderately prosperous society in all aspects” by 2021 which is the centennial of the founding of the party, and to turn China into a ”modern socialist country” by 2049, which is the centennial of the founding of the PRC.
Julian Gewirtz, a senior fellow for China studies at the Council for Foreign Relation, said the inclusion of these longer-term goals was significant, “though it is hard to say it means Xi will definitely rule until then”.

China’s New Aircraft Carrier Killer Is World’s Largest Air-Launched Missile

Navies are racing to develop hypersonic missiles which may change the pace of naval warfare. Russia will deploy the Zircon hypersonic missile aboard warships and submarines. The US Navy has started down the path of the common hypersonic glide body (c-HGB) for its destroyers.Meanwhile China’s latest hypersonic weapon is something completely different; it is air launched.
The massive new missile, labelled CH-AS-X-13, is probably the largest air-launched missile in the world.
The missile was first reported by Ankit Panda, the Stanton Senior Fellow at the Nuclear Policy Program, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, in April 2018. More recently candid images have appeared on Chinese social media. These provide a clearer view of the novel weapon.
Analysts believe that it may be intended to target high-value warships, particularly aircraft carriers. This makes it an anti-ship ballistic missile (ASBM). And it appears to be carrying a hypersonic glide vehicle (HGV). This may give it extended range and increase survivability against air defenses.
The CH-AS-X-13 may be closely related to the ground based DF-21D anti-ship ballistic missile. Image analysis suggests that it has different dimensions however, so may use a different rocket motor. The most likely reason for this would be the physical restrictions imposed by carrying it under an H-6 bomber. Additionally it appears to be equipped with a hypersonic glide vehicle (HGV) similar to the one seen on the DF-17 ballistic missile. Clearer images in the future may clarify this.https://www.navalnews.com/naval-news...e/#prettyPhoto

Air Launch makes sense. Drastically increase range if you get it into position via a plane first.

And the US Marine Corps wants to make Island Hopping "a thing" again. With the amount of able-bodied Chinese + drone swarms, the SW Pacific would be a massacre.

China unveils first practical drone swarm tech, 'to be used in amphibious landing missions
China has grasped the technology to practically use a drone swarm, a concept featuring the simultaneous and coordinated operation of a large number of drones that could prove to be very difficult to defend against, a Chinese arms firmrecently demonstrated in tests. Capable of deployment from the ground, sea and air, this new tool could play a vital role in challenging missions including amphibious landing operations, analysts said on Sunday.
The China Academy of Electronics and Information Technology under the state-owned China Electronics Technology Group Corporation recently conducted tests on a fixed-wing drone swarm system, Ordnance Industry Science Technology, a Xi'an-based defense magazine, reported on Saturday, citing a statement the academy released over the past week which did not reveal the system's designation.
During the tests, drones were released from truck-based, 48-unit launchers and from airborne helicopters. The drones were rapidly and simultaneously deployed while the transport platforms were on the move, andthe system can launch as many as 200 drones in one go, the report said.
After being released, the drones switched between different formations and conducted reconnaissance and attack missions on ground targets, the report said, noting that the drones look similar to China's domestically made CH-901, which is about 1.2 meters long, has a top speed of 150 kilometers an hour and a combat radius of 15 kilometers. Also known as a loitering munition, this kind of drone functions just like a normal drone in reconnaissance missions, but [color=red]can turn itself into a cruise missile and launch suicide attacks when it receives the order.[color]

Essentially the rumor of a vast underground network in support of their nuclear capabilities is true. The US does not have anything like it, their ground-based ICBMs are mobile. We did away with our mobile launchers a while ago.

The military has built an ‘underground Great Wall’ of tunnels to hide and move its arsenal of ballistic missiles, Wang Xiangsui tells Moganshan forum
The defences add up to a credible ability to mount a second strike, resulting in a deterrent effect, he says

China has spent the last two decades building defences for its nuclear armoury on land and at sea, ensuring that the military can hit back at a nuclear attack and deter others from launching one, according a former Chinese senior colonel.
Wang Xiangsui, now a professor at Beihang University in Beijing, said these defences – which included a vast network of tunnels to transport and protect missiles – meant China’s security was guaranteed even in the worst scenario.
“Launching nuclear strikes on China has always been a military option for the US,” Wang told a closed-door meeting last month.
“But for this option they are facing increasing uncertainties due to our adjustment and changes in the past 20 years.”
He delivered the assessment at the four-day Moganshan forum to discuss domestic and international issues and China’s new five-year plan, but the transcript of his remarks was only made public on Wednesday.
Without specifying the source, Wang said some US assessments claimed that only one Chinese nuclear warhead would be able to survive a US first strike and reach American soil in a counter-attack.
He dismissed the claims as “clearly nonsense”.
He said China had taken a series of measures over the years to establish a credible “second-strike” capability to respond to a nuclear attack.
In addition to intercontinental ballistic missile tunnels, China had developed advanced missiles and expanded “bastion waters” in the South China and Yellow seas in which its ballistic missile submarines could operate safely.
“These have drawn a bottom line for China-US confrontation – that the confrontation is unlikely to become a massive invasion, which is an important basis [of calculation for both sides],” he said.

All of China's future carriers are expected to use catapult-launchers, they are hoping to be able to field EM Catapults similar to the Ford Class Carriers within the next few years.
Footage suggests China testing another J-15T CATOBAR-capable prototype

Footage released by Chinese state-owned media on 17 November of the test facility at the Huangdicun naval airbase suggests that Shenyang Aircraft Corporation (SAC) has produced at least two prototypes of J-15 fighter aircraft modified for catapult-assisted take-off but arrested recovery (CATOBAR) operations: a variant commonly referred to as the J-15T.
The footage, which was part of a video report from China National Radio (CNR) on carrier pilot training and qualification, was released on the broadcaster’s official Weibo account, but removed from the social media platform only a few hours later.
The existence of the first CATOBAR-capable J-15 variant was confirmed in September 2016 when photos emerged showing the aircraft conducting a flight test. An assessment made at the time suggested that the J-15T prototype, which features a new nosewheel leg fitted with a catapult towbar and a more robust bracing strut, would be available for trials before the end of that year. By late 2016, China had completed construction of a test facility at Huangdicun Airbase featuring two catapult launch systems: one assessed to be a conventional steam-powered catapult, the other an electromagnetic catapult system.
The recent CNR video showed two grey-coloured J-15 prototypes at the facility, one of which was clearly recognisable as being CATOBAR capable. Since the two aircraft were parked in relative proximity of each other and both are marked with the black and yellow discs that facilitate analysis of flight performance during trials, it is highly likely that they are both J-15T prototypes, which would confirm rumours that a second aircraft is undergoing testing.https://www.janes.com/defence-news/f...ble-prototype/

Chinese team test jet engine ‘able to reach anywhere on Earth within 2 hours’

Prototype flown in hypersonic wind tunnel simulating flight conditions at nine times the speed of sound
The ‘sodramjet’ engine could offer the biggest hope so far of commercial flight reaching hypersonic speed, the scientists say
Chinese scientists have built what they claim is a revolutionary plane engine for Mach 16 flight. An aircraft powered by the engine could reach anywhere in the world within two hours, they said.
The test flight of a prototype in a hypersonic wind tunnel in Beijing suggested unprecedented performance in terms of thrust, fuel efficiency and operational stability.
The engine could also serve “reusable trans-atmospheric planes [that will] take off horizontally from an airport runway, accelerate into orbit around the Earth, then re-enter into the atmosphere, and finally land at an airport,” said the scientists, led by Professor Jiang Zonglin of the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Mechanics in a peer-reviewed paper published in the Chinese Journal of Aeronautics on Saturday.
The futuristic engine has a relatively simple design. It consists of three major components without any moving parts: a single-stage air inlet, hydrogen fuel injector and combustion chamber. The chamber’s mouth opens to the upper end of the air inlet.
“It is easily mistaken for a sliding board,” said a Beijing-based hypersonic flight researcher who was informed about though not involved in the study.
Jiang’s team put the engine in a powerful wind tunnel that simulated flight conditions at nine times the speed of sound.
As high speed wind hit the inlet, it generated shock waves with extremely high temperature and pressure. The shock waves met hydrogen fuel at the combustor and produced an explosion that pushed the engine forward. As the engine fired up, the mouth of the combustion chamber glowed like a Star Wars spaceship, according to video footage provided by the research team.
Jiang and colleagues called it the “standing oblique detonation ramjet engine”, or sodramjet for short. They said the engine could offer the biggest hope so far of taking commercial flight to hypersonic speed, or five times the speed of sound. Existing hypersonic flight engines, known as scramjets, are too weak, too fuel-hungry and too unstable.https://www.scmp.com/news/china/scie...earth-within-2

Analysts are worrying about China's long-held policy of "No First Use" changing to "First Use if it supports China's goals" or a Nuclear Response to a conventional attack on its Command & Control structures.
MYTHS OR MOVING TARGETS? CONTINUITY AND CHANGE IN CHINA’S NUCLEAR FORCES

The nuclear arsenal of the People’s Republic of China and its plans to use it are in the middle of an unprecedented shift. Just over a decade ago, China’s long-range nuclear force structure consisted of a handful of inaccurate, silo-based intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) that were kept at low readiness with nuclear warheads stored separately. Chinese posture was demonstrably one of retaliation, with a clearly articulated policy of “no-first-use” of nuclear weapons, while force readiness and command and control of those forces were both poorly suited for anything else.
In 2020, China’s nuclear posture and force structure has changed dramatically. Its arsenal has grown and diversified even as readiness and command and control have improved. By 2030, the country’s force structure and posture will be similar to America’s and Russia’s in many ways (albeit probably not at parity). Yet, in a recent article in these virtual pages, David Logan dismisses claims that China is reconsidering the fundamental role of nuclear weapons in its strategy as “dangerous myths.” He argues that China’s policy of no-first-use “is still intact” and dismisses as fiction the claim “that China has developed and deployed an array of nuclear war-fighting capabilities, including tactical nuclear weapons.”
[...]
The Long March of China’s Nuclear Posture, 1990 to 2020
As Avery Goldstein has argued, China’s grand strategy has not fundamentally changed since the 1990s, but it has, under Xi Jinping, become bolder. China’s nuclear posture has followed this broader evolution, seeking to provide Chinese leaders with a nuclear arsenal to underpin the country’s global ambitions. Xi has noted this close connection, [color=red]calling China’s missiles the “core of strategic deterrence, a strategic buttress to the country’s position as a major power and a cornerstone on which to build national security.”[color] Xi has also called for “a great rise in strategic capabilities.”
China’s nuclear posture in 2020 is a product of decades-long planning and execution, as with most things in modern China. In 1989, Maj. Gen. Yang Huan, a former deputy commander of Chinese missile forces (then known as the Second Artillery Corps, now the People’s Liberation Army Rocket Force), observed:
The research and development of our first generation of strategic nuclear weapons were a great success, but we must understand that there is still a great distance between the world’s advanced level of technology and our own. … Our Party Central Committee and the Central Military Committee have, according to scientific analysis of the international situation and in consideration of the actual conditions of our country, made decisions to change the strategic thinking that guides our military development. Under the current situation, the development of our strategic nuclear weapons should focus on long-term goals. We should develop advanced weapons that suit our national defense strategy, and at the same time we should improve current weapons to raise the quality and the comprehensive fighting capability. … We should work hard on the survival, fast reaction, accuracy, and break-through and high-command technologies for weapons systems.

Japan suspicious as Chinese, South Korean companies buy land near military sites
At least 80 plots of land near sensitive sites have been sold to Chinese and South Korean companies in the past decade and transactions are on the rise
'We do not believe it can be a coincidence’, says official within the Cabinet Secretariat.
A suspicious increase in the number of foreign companies purchasing plots of land close to Japanese military installations has prompted Tokyo to consider restricting such sales.
At least 80 plots of land close to Japanese military bases have been sold to either Chinese or South Korean companies in the last decade or so, a government panel has found, and an official within the Cabinet Secretariat says the transactions appear to be rising.
“We first started closely monitoring these sales seven years ago, but the situation has become much more acute in the last few years,” said the official, who declined to be identified.
“Work is under way on the outline of a basic policy and that will be completed before the end of this year,” the official said, adding that the agency was looking into deals the length and breadth of Japan.
“One of the proposals is for a more complete examination of the reason for the purchase of the land by a foreign company, something that is not specifically required at present,” the official said.

CHINESE BUYERS ARE NOW CHASING AFTER LAND AROUND MILITARY BASES?
According to real estate related sources from Okinawa, Chinese and other foreign capital is begin used to buy up land surrounding US military and Japanese self-defense force bases across Japan.A Singaporean-based company has set up a real estate office near the Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, and over a period of time a number of websites have popped up advertising military land for sale.
Ordinary civilians can purchase sections of land within military bases and become landlords. The land was originally held by local Okinawa residents, but in the past five years, the number of landlords from outside of Okinawa and outside of Japan has been increasing.
In 2004, the Japanese Government paid a total of 87.1 billion Yen in rent for military bases across Japan. In 2011, the rent had increased to 91.8 billion Yen (1.2 billion USD).
According to the Ministry of Defense, approximately one third of the US military bases in Okinawa are owned by 39,000 private individuals. Of these owners, 231 are foreigners.
Kevin Maher, former director of the office of Japanese affairs in Washington, warned in his book “The Japan That Can’t Decide” that China’s Ministry of Commerce was purchasing up land in Okinawa through private organizations.

PLA border patrol unit in Tibet using new exoskeleton system

Chinese broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV) revealed in a 9 December report that a new, locally developed exoskeleton system is being used by at least one People’s Liberation Army Ground Force (PLAGF) border defence unit in Tibet.
Footage released by the state-owned media outlet showed members of a unit in Ngari Prefecture putting on the unpowered exoskeletons and conducting patrols at an altitude of 5,000 m above sea level while carrying backpacks, each of which weighed about 20 kg, according to CCTV.
The broadcaster reported that this particular exoskeleton – the designation of which was not disclosed – is aimed at helping soldiers carry out tasks more efficiently in “harsh, high-altitude environments” and quoted one of the soldiers as saying that the weight of the backpacks is transferred to the frames of the exoskeleton instead of the user’s legs.
CCTV reported that exoskeletons were also recently used by soldiers attached to the PLA’s Xinjiang Military Command as part of a supply delivery mission, during which each of them carried 20 kg of food and water supplies in their backpacks. It is unclear, however, whether these soldiers used the same type of exoskeleton.
The broadcaster provided no further details about the recently deployed system but the report comes amid China’s efforts to expand the use of exoskeletons among some of its military units to help soldiers save energy while carrying out their duties, including carrying heavy loads.https://www.janes.com/defence-news/n...keleton-system

Beijing Upgrading Naval Bases To Strengthen Grip On South China Sea

A few days ago the Chinese Navy, formally known as the PLAN (People’s Liberation army Navy), conducted a live fire exercise over the South China Sea. Harbin Z-9 helicopters took off from a base at Sanya on the southern tip of Hainan and fired anti-ship missiles at simulated targets. The Z-9, a license built variant of the Eurocopter AS365 Dauphin, is a standard shipboard helicopter of the PLAN. The exercise itself sends a signal, but more critical is the base where they took off. That has been massively improved over the past year.
The South China Sea (SCS) is a strategically important, and hotly contested, area of water. China claims virtually all of it and has been strengthening its navy’s bases in the region. The airbase is not the only facility which could make a difference to the balance of power there. The aircraft carrier base a few miles along the coast is also being strengthened.
New satellite images show steady progress building a new dry dock there. It will large enough for China’s new Type-003 super carrier.
Construction of the dock started in 2016 and now appears close to completion. As with any new structure only observed in satellite imagery, there is a degree of uncertainty in assessing its purpose. However we are as confident as we can be at this stage that this is indeed a massive dry dock.
Having a dry dock on Hainan will greatly strengthen the naval presence there. It indicates that aircraft carriers will be permanently based on the island. Nearby, a pier which has already been used by carriers, currently has a brand new Type-075 assault carrier parked alongside. This can accommodate two full-size carriers.
China is building a fleet of aircraft carriers and the largest to date, the Type-003, is currently under construction in Shanghai. The Type-003 will be significantly larger than the first two carriers which were based on the Russian Kuznetsov Class design. They used a ski-jump like the Kuznetsov, but the third ship is expected to have an electromagnetic catapult similar to the U.S. Navy’s Ford class. In U.S. Navy terminology these are known as EMALS (Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System).
EMALs will allow heavier aircraft to be launched, such as the Xi’an KJ-600 carrier-based early warning aircraft. This is similar to the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye. New classes of fighter and uncrewed combat air vehicles (UCAVs) are also expected.

Part of the concerning trend of China's Navy modernization efforts.
China speeds up building aircraft carriers but will PLA sailors be trained for hi-tech ships in time?
China speeds up building aircraft carriers but will PLA sailors be trained for hi-tech ships in time?
A floating dock and the expansion of Jiangnan Shipyard will boost China’s commercial and military shipbuilding capacity
The accelerated construction comes as China faces both traditional and non-traditional security challenges, says analyst

A Chinese shipbuilder has stepped up construction of[color=red] two new-generation aircraft carriers[color], while the People’s Liberation Army is accelerating its training programme to meet the needs of the hi-tech warships when they launch.
Two independent military sources told the South China Morning Post that the keel laying would start early this year for its fourth aircraft carrier. Work on its sister ship, the Type 002, has already started, and both ships will be equipped with the most advanced electromagnetic catapult launchers.
Construction work on the fourth giant ship had been postponed because of the Covid-19 pandemic, the associated economic slowdown and some technical problems, the sources said.
“The navy bought and prepared all the special steel for the fourth ship last year, with work on some vessel components being started,” said one of the sources, who requested anonymity.
The latest online reports show China is increasing the hardware build-up to support its aircraft carrier projects, including a giant floating platform and a new shipyard.
On Monday, Shanghai-based Jiangnan Shipyard, which is building the Type 002, began a three-year base expansion project, according to a report published on social media by the shipbuilder’s mother company, China State Shipbuilding Corporation.
The 18 billion yuan (US$2.8 billion) complex, covering an area of more than 240 hectares (595 acres), will include shipbuilding research and design, indoor and outdoor dockyards, ship hull combination workshops, outfitting plants and outfitting quays, as well as other modern shipbuilding facilities with intelligent and automatic systems, the report said.
