I'll try to sum it up with some 'markers':

1. Neighbor (who owned a chain of restaurants) taking me for a spin in his 1989 Lamborghini Countach;
2. Playing sports - street hockey, baseball, footballbeforeplaying video games;
3. Neighborhood meet ups - everyone knew everyone.
4. Parents didn't have e-mail - barely any work related contact in evenings or weekends. Imagine sitting with your parents in the winter garden on a Sunday morning having brunch talking about life.
5. Vapid douches were outed as such - no coping behind social media/angles/bullchit.

Social cohesion was much better. Now it is standard that dipchits either move to neighborhoods and make no effort to get to know people, or end up moving to a neighborhood that is already poisoned by those sorts of dipchits. Social distancing happened way before COVID-19, and it is a product of douches who didn't understand how good it was before.

Wish I was born late 70's so I could be an 80's kid and 90's teen. From what I've read, 80's was pretty much like the 90's but with brighter colors and dumb hair.

80's was far better. Much more up beat and partied our asses off. 90's was full of angst and sadgasims. Everyone in the 90's was some kind of emo variant.

Ugh I forgot AIDS. Trashed the sex lives of a generation of teenagers. After a couple of decades of sexual liberation and everyone gets to root around freely, then in 1983 if you ever have sex it will kill you. Everyone believed that heterosexual sex with anyone would probably lead to death from AIDS.

Eventually a more realistic picture formed in people's minds and people went back to fear free sex. But if you were born in 1969 like me then it was a shadow that hung over your whole youth in terms of your chances of getting lucky and your feelings about doing so.

Other things I remember...

Your first car was pretty much going to have a V8. My first car was a Pontiac Custom S that cost $700 and had more power than I should have had.
I didn't start wearing seat belts until around my third year of driving. Of course, there was no shoulder harness.
Pretty much everybody had a personality. Wall flowers were rare.
We had a few drive thru liquor stores in my neighborhood. Don't see those any more.
If you wanted to meet a girl, you had to suck it up and go talk to her.
Phone calls, phone calls, phone calls. You had to actually talk to someone on a phone. It was how you communicated at a distance.

i want to read this thread but i know everyone old enough is going to say the same thing. we tend to romanticize the past, it's been in our heads all our lives and details get hazy, that's what i think. having said that, being born into the 80's i think i'm naturally programmed to believe it was the greatest of all time decade. when you're a baby everything in the world is pure, adults are gods, and anything bad that happens to you gets fixed by somebody else. i can't help it i love the 80's but **** you if you say yours was better than my adulthood

Never said bitchen lol . Yes Video killed the Tadio Star by the Buggles was the first video on MTV . I used to watch VH1 and MTV a lot back in the day . I’d record my favourite songs on VHS and have a compilation for when I got drunk .
Never had a pet rock but it was my idea . Dead srs ,I was on the farm picking rocks and I told my dad I wish we could sell them , to which he replied you can’t sell rocks son.
Three months later K-Mart was selling pet rocks lol

I think people could pretty much still smoke anywhere at that time. Hospitals, office buildings, airplanes, movie theaters, etc.

I understand the point, but I happen to think it’s objectively true that it was the peak of humanity for all the reasons set out. There were negative aspects, sure, but they were relatively trivial compared to genuine crisis of other decades. Above all you had a decently wealthy middle class and a traditional family structure. Everything else good flowed from that
