Just finished Hillbilly Elegy a few days ago -- one of my favorite books in recent memory


About to finish The Daily Stoic (second read through) -- I think this is one of those books I will read once a year



Started Pastoralia by George Saunders (collection of short stories) -- I really enjoy his short stories, Tenth of December being my favorite of his collections (ded fkn Srs)

Wrapped up Evil Geniuses 8/10 thoroughly enjoyed.

Anybody have any good audiobook recommendations? I found out I have like 9 audible credits that I need to use and a few long azz drives coming up.

Also audiobook wise, if you guys find yourself needing to kill some time, David Clarke on Librivox does a reading of the Count of Monte Cristo which is amazing. The audible full cast version of American Gods was also really really well done.

The Grimnoire Chronicles by Larry Correia. Alternate History where Magic is real and it's the 1930s. If the idea of a teleporting girl with a shotgun clearing rooms in an airship above imperial Japan sounds fun, you'll love these books. If you liked American Gods you'll be right at home here.

The narration by Bronson Pinchot is one of the best audiobook performances I've ever heard.

Two more books complete. I would recommend 'Drain The Swamp' to get a little insight into corruption in Congress. Ken Buck is a Congressman who is currently member of the Freedom Caucus. He basically describes how Congress is really just a large scale fundraising operation these days. He exposes both Democrats and Republicans equally, which I appreciate.

Currently reading 'Profiles in Corruption' by Peter Schweizer. It's a pretty good read so far. Peter focuses mostly on how some well-known Progressives use their political positions to make their family and friends rich at the expense of taxpayers.

I will always recommend The Wheel of Time for a long, epic read. 14 books each averaging 800-900 pages. I am about to begin book 8.

[1] Bird Box by Josh Malerman - 4/5
This one has been sitting on my shelf for quite a while as this book was all the hype in one of our former threads. Luckily it didn't disappoint, so thanks boyos. It's thrilling, scary, at times funny and well written. Couldn't put the book down the last 50 pages when I went to bed a bit late, which resulted in a short night of sleep but it was definitely worth it. Watched the movie right after it as well and that was one big disappointed.

[2] On the Shortness of Life by Seneca - 3/5
Took a bit of wrestling, but managed to finish the book despite it just being a bit over 100 pages. It started really strong with enticing passages about how to spend your time. He states that life isn't short, but it could be experienced as short if you waste it only living in the future, the past or without purpose. Especially his notion about people who feel themselves entitled to a claim on your time without any reason resonated with me. He compares time to money, whereas the people who expect you to aimlessly throw away your time on their endeavors without thinking twice, would think a long time to part with their money if you'd ask for it. Unfortunately, the second and third part couldn't grab me, making his page long sentenced hard to keep up with and focus on. Nevertheless, got some good lessons from this book. Recommended.

[3] The Republic of Thieves by Scott Lynch - 5/5
As I was a bit disappointed by the second book, my expectations were not that high. Happy to say that the book blew me away. It had the same vibe as the first book, was way more fast-paced and thrilling. Enjoyed getting to not Sabetha, as this added a lot more character depth to Lock and Jean

Almost finished with The Wide Lens and Doing Digital. Currently pondering what book to pick up next. Choices, choices..

It can definitely be a slow burn, but I believe that it is worth it. I heard that they are making a TV series. I feel that it could definitely be on the level of Game of Thrones. There are so many characters and storylines; it could be epic.

this book has so much hype behind it -- i truly thought it was one of the silliest 'business books' i've ever read. seriously a bunch of hot air with a few truths sprinkled in (in my opinion) (ded fkn Srs)

Nearing the end of Leviathan Wakes.

Pretty damn good. 8 book series so that'll put me at 12 ish by the time I finish them.

I just finished Unmasked by Andy Ngo. I think everyone needs to read that book. Andy basically had his reputation as a journalist destroyed for outing antifa for what they are. He had to flee the country due to so many death threats after publishing the book.

Fiction heavy start to the year. Winter is our busy season here in Florida so it's always a more hectic/stressful time of year, been enjoying some lighter/escape reading.

Into the Looking Glass and it's three sequels - military sci fi by John Ringo. Like all his books these are heavy on the conservative politics, huge guns, nasty aliens and detailed military action. The first book is focused on ground combat but the next three pivot to space naval combat. Not his best series (that would be his "March" books) but still very fun. Unfortunately book 4 left things very open for the series to continue and came out in 2008, so I think this one ends on a cliffhanger.

Prodigal Son is the 6th Orphan X book. Didn't he say he was going to do 5 of these? Something (huge piles of money) must have changed his mind. Still a fun espionage novel, but the overarching plot has slowed way down. The introduction of several new characters who are very clearly going to be main characters moving forward shows that he's going to stretch things out more. These books are good but I worry how you can keep ratcheting up the stakes considering in book 4 heSpoiler!

Thought I'd read a classic Sherlock Holmes book this time. It was pretty good but kind of dry in character development and because of this a little hard to follow.
