If I recall, he was brought to the US as an indentured servent "for life" (which was essentially a slave) but the guy he was working under died. That is how he got his freedom. He may have been the first african in america to have slaves but its debatable if he was the first person to ever have a slave in amerca.

I work in a semi-ghetto area. The conversations I hear on a daily basis as well as some of the things I see are all I need to explain what is the problem. I sure don't beleive that is is anything white people are doing. In fact, the less white an area is, the worse it gets. Buddy of mine decided he wanted to be something so he came here to Atlanta and went to a good school and got a degree and is doing well for himself. He planned to go back to his home town to be with his family but decided not to.
