I think that both of those are plausible, direct benefits. I do not necessarily believe that there is any "reset" that needs to happen in the brain. And if you are waiting for some change to occur in your neurotransmitters, instead of focusing on a purpose in life, then you are wasting valuable time.
And once you demystify the matter, it is easy to see that these are concepts that have existed for thousands of years.
There is an argument that is commonly rehashed, and that is where do the benefits primarily come from. E.g. from no porn, no orgasm, or no sex, etc. And I believe all of these viewpoints could be reconciled on a person-to-person basis if you could extricate desire from each factor and measure it. The answer is that it depends and it is up to you where your desires come from and how you are channeling them.
Do you have a beneficial outlet? Or are all of your desires being channeled into an addiction? Another way of looking at this would be to look at the addicts of any drug. Some people have turned to crime and made enormous amounts of money, only to use it to fuel their addiction (in a rare case where the addiction came first.) But most addicts are not likely to have another outlet. And a large amount are not able to establish a decent source of income.
