Hey good thread!

I did Aikido in 1994 when I was 17 / 18 cause I didn't know any better, did it for about 18 months.

Did taekwondo at university for maybe 3 months.

Fast forward to 2009 / 10, did BJJ at city kickboxing before it was famous, had a kickboxer guy in my BJJ class called Israel Adesanya, apparently he wanted to learn BJJ forwhen he did MMA one day.
Got my blue belt… stopped going.

2020 - signed back up with city kickboxing to start from scratch and do an amateur fight! - was training 5x a week until this virus hit. Getting back into it and loving. The same head coach remembers me! Same of my old mates from BJJ are still there. Good times.

Under corona virus we do home workouts that are set, for a bit of fun have linked up with other MMA gyms to do conditioning workouts, like SBG Ireland, etc. Placed in the 9th vs amateur and some pros even worldwide for this workout: (did it in 15:20)

100 squats
90 sit ups
80 lunges
70 mountain climbers
60 sec plank
50 burpess
40 pushups
30 knee stands
20 jump squats
10 jumping knee tucks

OP:

Is it possible for a dude with reconstructed ACLS (both knees) to start out with a fighting sport? No proper practice before, but always been good at all type of sports in general. I know many fighters have had their ACLs reconstructed and continued, but they were already good/pros

I'd imagine boxing being the "safest", but kickboxing and Muay thai just seems more interesting as well as any type of grappling sport

Sorry it took me so long. I've been thinking about this all day.

As you already knew it depends on the severity of your injuries or healing condition but there always are risks for you to further aggravate the injuries.

Both Kickboxing and Muay Thai use roundhouse kicks and knee kicks more often than any other martial arts. Those types of kicks involve adduction or rotation(?) of both knee joints. Also you need a lot of extensive practice to perfect your kicking forms. The practice demands a lot from even healthy knee joints.
  • Roundhouse Kick

  • Diagonal Kick = A semi-circular kick, 45 degree roundhouse kick

  • Reverse Roundhouse Kick

  • Down Roundhouse Kick

Kick - wiki

I asked my friend about your situation and he recommend Tai chi (Tàijí quán) instead. He thinks they might have positive effects on the ACL injuries. But I think finding good Tai chi gym or instructors might be difficult for you.

Before you decide or do anything, you have to know what you shouldn't and what you must not do and only your doctor you've been seeing could tell you that. Once you have some idea of that then you personally talk to the new gym instructor you've checked, explain your situation and ask his opinions or what he can do to help you.

Just do not take any unnecessary risks. You can start with upper body attack and defense skills first and then you can learn the art of kicks later when your knees get better.

One more thing, if you have a pain even the slightest one, it may force you to acquire a bad form. Correcting it would take you forever.

I'm neither a medical or a Muay Thai expert so I'm afraid I can do only this far. All I want to tell you is:

Though it may sound cliché if you have Discipline, Drive and Determination nothing is impossible.

Take care and good luck!

Great thread

I've not trained in months because of covid and before then moving to a small town with no training

When this is over I'm looking to rent and mat out a space to start a little grappling/boxing club for me and some locals who've expressed interest

The physical and psychological benefits from serious marital arts training can't be beaten

It is my belief that having more than two harmonious passions are better than only one obsessive passion . Especially you can't continue one for some reason like injury of a specific body part.

Thanks for sharing, m'friend.

There are a few gyms in Tokyo, including MagaGYM, people can learn the art. These days I've heard many police and JSDF officers are practicing it. My late father was JGSSDF(Ground Force) sergeant but there wasn't Krava Maga instructors in his time.

I know brother, you cannot always find a decent gym in the next town you move to. Most of young people go to the fitness gyms instead of martial arts gyms, so fee is usually higher than what we hope. One by one, Many of my dojo-friends quit their practice over time.

Wish someday you can restart yours. Good luck!

I've hurt my back before…and it's a reinjured from years ago. I'm hoping to get back to pain free…I think I will based on how it's going, but it's a slow injury to heal. I suppose it's more fortunate that it coincides with this social distancing as the dojo is closed.

I do see myself continuing with martial arts indefinitely, though. My sensei is in his 60's and can still beat me…he's real quick. He's the only guy I know who can standing choke people reliably in randori lol…I think it's because he is a karate guy first. He does Japanese style jiu-jitsu as well…from what he's shown in Judo…kind of like Aikido but pretty rough. He does kendo too…which is amazing to me to see those guys go at it.

I think to progress in Judo I just need to focus on it, though. At least for a few more years. I'm years away from shodan and would like to achieve it while I'm still alive lol.
Wow, your blood is as thick as can be for a human. No wonder you are so adaptable to so many arts/sports.

Harai goshi is a great technique and could be awesome counter move against agile opponents when quickly closing in.

Injuries sucks and also the lack of good sensei are the two major reasons for us to prematurely quit the arts. You are lucky to have such a great and experienced teacher.

Take care and good luck on your challenge for Judo black belt/shodan!!

Thanks for sharing your story!! *bow*

Competed 6 months ago to keep my spot in the rankings

Had a few months off with the intention of competing in April as last training camp was hell for me so really needed the recovery.

Have barely trained since my last bout but have still been sparring at least once a week

Planned on keeping cardio up during lockdown but instead I’ve not stopped getting high, playing Streets of Rage 4 and watching Avengers movies.

Can’t wait to start training to compete again

Welcome friend!

I wanted to ask you (and others too) a question.

Why did you start martial arts in the first place? There are so many people who do practice only martial arts, multiple martial arts I must add. Most of them don't play ball games any more.

Planned on keeping cardio up during lockdown but instead I’ve not stopped getting high, playing Streets of Rage 4 and watching Avengers movies.

Can’t wait to start training to compete again
Wish this crisis will end soon. Good luck, brother.

It's not much, but I started boxing in March. I looked into Boxing and Muay Thai, both reputable trainers with competing fighters, but I've been told boxing would give me a better background since I'm a complete beginner.

Hopefully this quarantine is lifted soon so I can back at it. I also have a love for Judo. Why I don't know, but I definitely want to take Judo

Good for you, starting new things is always a joy of life. Also you'd meet many new friends there.

BTW, Judo, like Wrestling, doesn't let us keep social distancing. j/k

Good luck!

In my frat we started getting into the habit of wrestling after a night of drinking. We'd get plastered, move aside the furniture and the WWE would begin. I was bad. Like dead last bad. I couldn't beat people I had 50 lbs on, i just had no idea how to fight. I said **** it, i wanna learn how to do this. Went to a BJJ gym, trained over the summer. When we got back to school we started wrestling again. One of my buddies was real good, could tap anyone in like 30 seconds. He was big(6'2 210ish lbs, benched like 250lbs for reps. I was smaller at 6'0, 180lbs, DYEL). He said "I bet no one in this house can beat me." Bet. We wrestled for what had to of been like 10 minutes straight before I seized his back, sprawled him out and rear naked choked him for the W(he was powerful and a good wrestler but he just had no idea how to actually attack me). I went from the worst guy in the house to beating the best. Trained ever since. Men respect you a lot more if they think you are a competent fighter.

Thanks for the sharing. You can't anticipate what is waiting for you in a long life.

Among a couple of young drunks at a wrestling match one night, one of them was so inspired to become a future BJJ champion!

I wonder girls' pillow fight has the same effect on their athletic future?

I did some karate and TKD as a young kid and I remember loving that I could prove myself one of the toughest in the room when we did our conditioning exercises. (I was that 4-year-old busting out knuckle push ups). I got bored with the lack of "real fighting" and wandered off into other sports, but I discovered BJJ at age 30 after my competitive running ended. Now I love it. It's such an absorbing mental and physical challenge, and the adrenaline rush of fighting is like nothing else–especially in competition. I've posted a ton of my matches here so you guys know I compete a lot–when we aren't in lockdown. The camaraderie with teammates and sparring partners is like nothing else. We all keep in touch and work out together during lockdown, study video, discuss technique, etc. Plus I still train with my girlfriend at home. We're about to go study some sweeps an submissions from closed guard right now, in fact. I'll probably be a blue belt for awhile given the current situation… haha.

Always love a positive Samraiwise thread
When I was young, it was the 80's and the only tournaments we had were light/no contact. I went up through green belt in Karate but also learned Judo and some boxing, I love all the arts I tried.
I REALLY wish MMA would have been around then, I think I would have loved it.
I stopped practicing about the time I got married, but I still have a Century canvas heavy bag that is probably over 30 years old, I hang it up and punch and kick it on rare occasions.
My buddy who started martial arts around the time I did now owns a local studio and has his black belt in Royce Gracie jiu jitsu, he's an amazing, positive guy like you are.
I always joke with him on ******** about once per year to remind him of the time he broke my nose with a spinning backfist in light contact sparring.
I did a Bruce Lee and licked the blood before I went to clean up. It's fun to bring it up, he still feels guilty about it, haha!

I'm curious, what's the need for a martial art? Isn't the best way just to spar and evolve your skills from there?
