GRRM barely helped with the tv series, it was all d&d and their staff.
My main issue was them coming up with the arbitrary number of 73 hours for the entire show. With HBO giving/wanting them to take as long as they needed to properly wrap up the series, they decided to rush it because they want to go onto 'bigger and better' things. Im fine with them wanting to move on but give it to someone else to give the series justice or man up and finish what you started. Their legacy would have been set if they were able to give the show a proper ending instead of rushing it.

Literally everything could have been the same. Arya kills NK, Cersie is the final boss, Dany starting to go mad, Jamie going back to KL, 2 dragons dying, etc, If they would have taken the time to write it well. The problem I have is that because of the time constraintthey set for themselves, its ruining the story. Extend season 7 and 8 to 10 episodes each and write the stories ending better.

lets be real though. let's say all the asoiaf books were finished. they would have made the best tv series of the century.
We agree here

2) Have a couple of eps where the survivors flee to Iron Islands to regroup and then head down south.

3) Have Cersei FINALLY realize the error of her ways and join the fight once the army of the dead surrounds King's Landing (or have Jaime or Tyrion kill her).

4) Massive final battle with all of the survivors vs. the undead army again (with Bran possibly playing a pivotal role in the NK's defeat).

5) Perhaps a final ep where the survivors (if there are any) finally decide who will sit on the Iron Throne (or maybe they just ditch the throne altogether).

How hard was that?

Season 7 should have showed hbo that d&d are nowhere near as good at coming up with their own material.HBO shouldn't have moved forward with d&d for season 8 and the fact that hbo offered additional seasons, d&d declined, and HBO still went with d&d is HBO's fault.

So I still stand by the opinion that HBO is at fault for not dropping d&d for season 8. But on the other hand I don't have suggestions for who they should have used instead as writers. So ultimately it is what it is.
I think that HBO gave no fuks about the show quality and just wanted to keep their moneymaker rolling.

this, in a way D&D wanted to end this on as high a note as they thought they could lol

before it got too lame and drawn out. 10 years is a long time.

lol at them saying "it was always gonna be 74 hours" though that was super specific

I’m banking on the ep 6 spoilers being fake. Apparently security around that episode was absolutely ridiculous. Maybe I’m just really hoping they’re fake.

How I kind of hope Jon’s story ends:
Spoiler!
He goes North and is reunited with Ghost. Last shot of the series is Jon discovering wildling body parts arranged in the way the white walkers did it

I can’t remember if I read this in those spoilers or only the “Jon goes North” part and I made up the body parts. Either way I’m sure someone else has already thought of this theory.

Either way it’s interesting because it’s how lord of the rings ended—the main character’s best friend, Sam, gets the girl and knocks her up and the main character leaves to go to another land

EXPECTATIONS: SUBVERTED

also, someone on reddit was able to recut the Rhaegal death scene completely using the existing footage so that it actually made sense:

And relief washes over me in an awesome wave

I would love nothing more than some weird **** to happen that somehow brings the white walkers back and they kill all of my favorite characters.

GRRM saga is called “a song of fire and ice” after all, which implies the white walkers are a main focus in this series.

Theres a huge problem with that: it requires competent writers to fill in meaningful dialogue over several epsiodes. That is literally beyond the scope of what D&D want to do. They were done with the series many years ago and are 1000% ready to move on to more business deals.

If they had good writers and spent more money on writing? Yes this would be a great way to close out the series, even after they butchered it apart. (so basically I agree)

Also don't think it would have to end with a good vs evil battle, but again this is a writing quality issue

Personal opinion...they wanted to get on to their Star Wars project.

The same guys gave us solid stuff whether it was in the books or a variation to it. For the past two seasons, they've just been over it.

I hadn't interpreted that comment as saying Daenarys legit forgot the Iron Fleet existed -- which seems to be the implication people are going for -- it was moreso that the whole Northern army had their blinders on and were entirely focused on the NK while the Southern forces were planning for the final fight. The Northerners had tunnel vision before and after The Battle of Winterfell and weren't thinking about what their Southern enemy would be doing and would be capable of upon their return

Benioff explained the intent badly and that's slightly concerning coming from someone who's writing these episodes, but picking on chit like that is honestly petty. There are enough legitimate issues with Season 8 without picking apart an interview of the writers, as if neckbeards on the internet would do a better job explaining their thought processes in front of a camera for an HBO interview

So, who wants to bet than in order to "subvert expectations" Arya kills the Mountain as well?

Either after he offs the Hound, or by stabbing him while the Hound is facing off against him?

nah I agree with some of the complaints but do they ruin the show for me? not really... still the series is miles ahead of anything else ever seen on TV before..

and this is coming from someone whos never satisfied with anything tv/movies/anime wise, Im just gonna enjoy the ride for once.

at this point there wasnt more content to adapt but GRRM himself has said it should have been 12 seasons. So i think clearly there was enough content for more seasons.

Yes, wanting semi-decent writing without extremely glaring continuity errors, characters who used to be clever turning to morons,a plot that doesn't disintegrate into a shower of ch*t and piles of plain, dumb chit happening in a show that used to be one of the GOATS is neckbeard. Forget everything that made it good in the first place. Dat thinking stuff is neckbeard and doesn't matter cause it had epic wicked flips n chit. I'm with you brah. This is some good chit like my favourite movie: Fast and Furious 6.
