You can build an entire system for under $2,000 including the generator, enclosure, tri-fuel conversion, lines etc. Just hook it up and power it up when the power goes out, can be run for days/weeks with no issue. For instances like this, it's obvious what the benefit is. Power issues happen all the time and will continue to rise, the power grid is so antiquated, it's only a matter of time before issues occur.

I wouldn't be wasting car gas staying warm. Start a fire in the yard (do you city folks have yards?) or heck the street if you can. Just about anything burns, my neighbor fed his campfire this year with kids plastic car seats. Pour oil on top and some lighter fluid and you will have plenty of heat. Just don't stand downwind (srs). Cavemen survived on campfires.

Wondering who insurers are going to target for subrogation in all this. A lot of this damage is going to be a little bit beyond having ServiceMaster flood cut the sheetrock.

Still no power outages here near Dallas, but they're all around my neighborhood. Have 2 adults, 2 kids, and 2 dogs staying with us. That family has been without power for over 48 hours now.
Being anti-2nd Amendment is like saying "We have too many rights, please take some away!"

Jesus. "The windmills" didn't do this, a lack of winterization did. The majority of the lost capacity was natural gas. Even a nuclear reactor shut down due to frozen safety instruments and last I saw, is still shut down 36 hours later. Coal stocks getting damp and freezing in winter and becoming unusable is a routine problem, and apparently the water systems also froze up entirely at some coal plants.

This is a once-a-century event, but once-a-century still means "it will happen". They were just cheap fukks masquerading it as Texas-style libertarianism to scam ratepayers on a shoddy product, hoping they'd pocket the money and die before anything like this caught up with them.

There are already deaths. Whether Texans will actually force the upgrades or not remains to be seen.

Last time it was this bad was 1989. We've had freezes and ice before every few years but it's never that bad and usually only lasts a day or two.

Rolling power every 30min. Sucks, can't bake or do laundry. Once you get into work, or something, it shuts down. City shut off water as well. New layer of ice, so no travel compared to yesterday. All stores are sold out or without power, no resupply for days. Running low here.

texas facing the biggest humanitarian crisis since ever
Up to 15 million Texans remain without heat and electricity as temperatures across the state are well below freezing. Another round of winter weather is battering parts of the state Wednesday morning, as many Texans have been without electricity since Sunday are desperately scrambling to find shelters. Weather-related deaths have already been reported as one of the nation's wealthiest states can barely supply electricity to its residents. And some of those residents have written to us to share their painful realities...

The unprecedented polar vortex split, dumping Arctic air down to the Gulf of Mexico, resulted in frozen wellheads that impeded the flow of natgas to power stations, triggering electric shortages as demand overwhelmed the grid. Considering ERCOT, which manages 90% of the state's electric load, has a high percentage of electrical generation produced via natgas, power has yet to be restored to millions of folks. Still on Wednesday, the power grid operator warned 40% of generation capacity remains offline.

The cascading effect of blackouts and controlled power outages has resulted in some critical infrastructure such as cellular networks and water treatment plants going offline.

As we attempt to show below, the speed at which one of the nation's wealthiest states transforms into a third-world country is simply stunning.

Jared Tennant, a drone pilot in central Texas, captured stunning images of how downtown Austin has been lit up during the power grid collapse while surrounding and more impoverished communities on the outskirts of town have had their power cut.

One reader wrote that central Texas looks like a "refugee situation of sorts," offering some anecdotal accounts of what he's seeing on the ground which is nothing short of a disaster in the making.

Infrastructure fails in 1:100 year events.

20 years ago we had a 1:100 year event ice storm, we had chain collapse of thousands of pieces of major infrastructure, power was out for a month and dozens of people froze to death.




Daddy government will not upgrade to accommodate this, if you built everything to sustain a 1:100 year event your tax base would revolt. Emergency preparedness has to fall on the individual, it sucks but it will continue to suck.

Power has been much better today. Still rolling in an out but I've at least managed to get the temperature of my apartment up from 48 degrees to 60 degrees right now.

Little by little I'm returning to first world problems like running out of dishes

In 1859 the earth had a near-miss solar flare called theCarrington Event.

If it happened today (and they happen all the time) it would wipe out trillions in electrical systems globally, the continental US would be dark for a long time.

Then, just like medicine and vaccines last year, people will discover how much of your transformer, semiconductor, and other critical infrastructure components have manufacturing offshored in China and India. It would be years before the world recovered.

We missed one in 2012 by 9 degrees of earths orbit.
