You have plenty of time to hydrate from whatever water source you find and then seek medical aid for parasites/issues once your safe. The one thing that annoys me most out of all the PSA's about not drinking water from a lake/river/stream is they fail to tell people its better to drink that water then die because your dehydrated. My husband goes solo backpacking all of the time and even took our daughter hiking often in one of those backpacks, but it was a crowded trail and he was a seasoned hiker.
Although once he did run out of water solo backpacking and hit the SOS signal on his GPS, so I was on the phone all night with the search and rescue and they kept him out there until the morning when they could rescue him with a helicopter. Crazy story but true.
I went on 3 backpacking trips with him and we ran into bears, once it was hunting season as that was before he knew what he was doing. It can be scary out there.
But I think day hikers are the worst because they aren't prepared with a water filter and food.

In your husbands case he may not have had a water source. In the case of this story they were right by a freaking river.
It really blows my mind that people go walking in rugged areas without at least the basics.
-Water + a source to carry more water from a river/stream/lake.
-Snack bar + some kind of hard candy for the sugar/carbs.
-Fire-starter
-Flashlight
-Compass.
-GPS/Personal locator device to signal for aid.
-Pistol/knife.
On top of that just looking at a topographical map of area on your phone and taking a screen shot or two can be a game changer. It takes about 15 minutes of forethought/prep to not die in the wilderness. I feel like most people just take it for granted and never bother researching basic survival techniques/skills.

They were ascending a fairly tall mountain face. The article has them found at the 3100 ft mark. At 1800 ft they were at the river in the valley. With hindsight you'd hang around the river chilling and splashing around until the cooler evening. Bring purification tablets/pump and you have unlimited drinking water while you're there. And bring a hat ffs, soak it and put it on your head.

Yeah I would drink from the river, too, if I was faced with dehydration. Idk what these people were thinking.
