I guarantee if they dropped the anchors when they originally lost power, lives would have been saved. And that bridge would still be erected.

Lol this. Dropping an anchor will…eventually…get that ship slowed down.

But if youre within a few hundred yards already…nope.

That ship is in open water the ship that hit the bridge was in a shallow channel, do you understand the differences between the two?

Urine idiot. At best the ship would have swung around on the anchor and hit the bridge sideways. But really impossible because the anchor is way too small and insignificant to stop a ship that size. It's not an emergency brake. It would have just snapped off and killed anyone on the deck.

Dragging it along the bottom would take miles to stop, if it didn't catch onto something and snap off.

This. the amount of energy a boat of that size has moving even at low speeds is insane. The anchor cannot stop it. they are basically fuked if there are mechanical problems with the engine either going off or full throttle at the wrong moment.

The anchor's job is to keep the boat from drifting in the seas when it is at a standstill. It is not a brake.

Do you really believe the designers of the ship installed an incompatible anchor and chain set for that vessel?

Come on buddy we man the anchor during these channel navigations for a reason.

Ever thought that maybe that's done as a risk mitigation action that *could* potentially help in the right conditions?

Here is a large ship doing an emergency stop with its anchor and chain.

Let’s not forget the chain combined weight is at least 3x the weight as an anchor.

And there are multiple anchors.

No anchor is designed to stop a fully laden container ship.

There’s a few other things that could have been down too, like take remote control of the rudders when the ship lost power.

And all of that takes time to enact as well. It's been 5 mins since this happened. Let the facts shake out.

Yeah…that ship didnt stop. Who knows how loaded it is. How deep the water is. It had full power. And also in a "perfect" situation to react cooly, calmly, and collectedly in an "emergency" scenario they knew was coming.

Bro, an anchor needs the correct angle for it to do anything and dig into the base properly. If you just drop an anchor straight down, it'll just LOL at you.

Bro, the boat was still moving. It was just dragging the anchor with it. Also, iImpossible to compare not knowing the size of the ship, the speeds they were going, or the depth of the water. What a terrible comparison. Just let it go.
