I can relate. Don't mind these rural folks. Riding around in their open vistas sans traffic. They have no idea the perils we face daily for just a modicum of cycling R&R. My traffic woes and close calls could fill a database. Anyway, I'll save all that for when I release my memoirs; daddy needs new brake pads. Stay tuned.

When your "recovery spin" turns into you heading out for the first 30 minutes, getting lost.. and then you find yourself done 4 hours later at the beach.

Eeeeek.

Glutes/Hams are FRIED from deadlifts and lunges yesterday, never again am I going 2+ weeks without doing a squat or deadlift. Lesson learned..

Guys. Do you ever get about an hour in and suddenly it feels like both your tyres are running at 20psi. Also as if you lost your gears because 10 min prior the gear you were in was cruising at 15mph.

First of all, that's no way to treat the beavers SkepticalOne. Shirley you can do better. Full disclosure, both of those use to be my weakness for years. The entire office always knew which desk held the Snickers, M&M stash. Gave it all up though once I got on that health food/exercise time.

Have we taken a left turn though the portal doughnutgut? If you're being serious (I'm never really sure) the best I can imagine would be fatigue or lack of hydration.

In those cases it can sometimes feel like I'm towing a car. But I typically don't feel any loss of energy until at least hour 3 when its time to re-energize.

Krane.

It was only (measly to most) 26miles. But serious. Never experienced a flat road feeling like a hill with flat tyres.

I had a choc bar in my jersey and a fruit shoot. But crikey. It was a VERY strange feeling.

Also mate. I have fallen head over heels with cycling. In a big way.

Tagged on to two guys for 5 miles today who welcomed me along.

Agreed.

The way I eat/drink (load) the day before makes a world of difference on my performance.

If I force myself to drink water the day before a big ride, I can sometimes go the first 25 miles without needing a sip. On the other hand, a bad load I can't get enough water during the ride.

If I carried all the food and drink I consume on a ride like this, I'd need a trailer. Choose a route that has a few gas stations along the way.

I eat more cleanly than most anyone you've ever met - on a 7.5 hour ride, a few stops at the 7-11 for glucose and caffeine spike can become a necessity. Nothing to do with self-indulgence or excess - after you've broken 100 miles, your concern for eating clean is trumped by physiological performance. Know your body and how to fuel it. In fact, the reason for this long ride was to experiment on feeding and hydration in anticipation of upcoming events. I have usually used Nuun electrolyte tablets to avoid hyponatremia...I'm experimenting with pure water again and various food items to find the balance.

I agree too.

I have to ask what does everyone else bring with them to eat during rides when it is hot? I am getting tired of eating gels and protein bars. I leaning more towards "real foods" that won't spoil in the upcoming heat.

I live in a tropical part of Australia, i just don't ride during the day when it's "hot". It would probably kill me. Pretty much Florida weather all year round but with less ozone layer, though im hoping for a month or so of decent riding weather now that winter is coming.

I'm still totally on the fence about buying a trainer to manage to get some decent miles in. Have nearly pulled the trigger on a Neo so many times.

I get about an hour in when suddenly my lower back goes to snap city and i start thinking "maybe i need to be more aware of my posture when riding". Always about 5 minutes after that im back to normal for some reason.

Interesting. Are you taking into consideration intensity and environmental factors i.e. temp, humidity, etc., as well? I have some ideas too, but nothing in that distance/time range.

I also would look forward to a more comprehensive analysis (should you care to share it) once you've reached your conclusion.

I've ridden (and run) in the south Florida summer humidity at high noon and I'm here to say you won't get far. You stop at a light and between the sun frying your brain from overhead and the heat vapors coming up from the asphalt it feels like pure death. The west coast gets much hotter but without the humidity, its much less painful.

Will do...what I can tell you now, is that after 50 miles on pure water, I would routinely get the onset of severe headaches...this despite adequate hydration. What I discovered is that I was suffering from inadequate electrolyte replenishment - effectively over-hydrating. I responded by spiking all water bottles last season with Nuun tablets. This season I'm looking to see to what extent I can lean this out.

My run-up meals are usually oatmeal, almonds, bananas, eggs, green smoothies...once on the ride I will use Clifs bars, Hammer Gels, Clif Bloks, etc...not because they are nutritionally superior to other, less processed sources, but rather due to their convenience in being able to 'meter-out' the right macros over intervals. Obviously this can be done with home-prepared sources, but with my time on the bike, the gym, my two kids, and working professional, this is a price I am willing to pay.

If you ever have the time, there is a wealth of great endurance physiology info here:

http://www.hammernutrition.com/media...nghandbook.pdf

As the cliche goes, your mileage may vary. Learning about my body's performance under stress has been one of the more interesting and rewarding aspects of my plunge into cycling. Have I mentioned I turned 40 earlier this year (big wink to Krane)?

merrrrliiiin, especially that can of coke. I know of nothing better to drink when you're tired on a ride or hike. On my 144km, 2200m+ ride the other week I bought 2 cans of coke at a gas station on the way back home. My god.... tasted great and gave me enough energy to get home and still apply good power to the pedals. With regards to actual nutrition it's actually probably one of the best things you can drink given it's essentially just simple sugar and caffeine. (not employed by coca cola lol)

Adventure riding can be fun but it also can be annoying checking the GPS over and over again while riding.

It's waaaaaay more fun the second time you do the same route.
this is what I'm thinking, which kinda sucks as today is our first fully sunny day in many months, albeit cold (5c currently, 41f). So I don't want to be fiddling with my phone trying to figure out where the hell I'm going

Checking in.

But lol, I haven't ever (apart from stopping somewhere) actually eaten ON the bike. I may need to start considering the duration of the 142 miler I have coming up (typically lasts over 9-10 hours) lol.

Nah i haven't ridden with Lance but I know he does a lot of the same rides I do here. They meet up at his shop, Mellow Johnny's, for group rides on the weekend, I'm just really bad about waking up early on the weekend after early mornings M-F.

Just noticed the new thread. Moving my post here...

Trying to sell 3 bikes on craigslist and I've got a nagging feeling that I'm underpricing the dang things. I listed an aluminum 2011 road bike with low end shimano components for $210 and got two texts within a few hours. I didn't expect that.

What's sad is I can fix my own bikes and know what is a decent bike and what is not. However, I haven't a clue what is a fair used price. Bicycle blue book seems kinda of bs.

Another successful longer ride with my broski this weekend. There was a road race on which we tried to follow but we soon got dropped! Found out later on that the average speed was 25.7mph over 2 and a bit hours!

Did about 2-3miles to the start point as well so this is closer to 38-39mi

We had fun anyway but I'm reaching the limits of my Wiggle basics bib shorts, getting chafing and suchlike from the seams and generally the way the pad moves about and chit. So it looks like the next bike purchase will be some higher end bib shorts.
