They need to go after the company/companies that are making that cladding. There has been a few fires the last couple years where the whole building went up like that and its either been newer construction or recently been redone on the outside. I was reading on reddit that there have been claims that management has been saying that they were told the cladding was fireproof. They found out after the fact that it in fact was not. If I owned a building and have it in writing somewhere that the cladding I paid for was fireproof I'd start testing.
I'm not saying that rumor is totally true but if it is someone needs to be held responsible.

I know it sounds stupid, but if you have to live in a high rise, always stock parachutes for your family. srs.
Would saved many lives in the WTC buildings, and guaranteed more people here would've survived because of it.

lmao Im pretty sure that building is too short for a parachute to work. Most parachutes take 600 feet to 1200 feet of free fall to open. 600 feet is equivalent to a 55 story building.

These council blocks are definitely not built with fire safety in mind. That's the tragedy here.
Faulty washer/dryer or is it the piping that is all clogged up? I know some cities/insurance companies have rules about having the ducting cleaned every couple of years. My dad had a business cleaning the ducting for dryers and it was scary what we would see. No air flow at all.... people not realizing they actually needed to clean the lint trap in the dryer.... we actually had one place we went to because the tenant had complained the dryer wasnt working. When we got there we opened the dryer and the lint trap was solid packed and had actually caught on fire at one point but somehow actually went out on its own.

In this case it was an actual factory fault in the dryer. That particular model of dryer had been recalled by the company (Hotpoint I believe) and was due for an inspection. Having said that, I'm very much aware that blocked ducts and full lint traps are a significant danger. I clean the lint trap in my dryer before every single cycle.

That just reduces water pressure available to properly fight the fire.

Also, with modern low flow fixtures, you'll die of old age before there is enough flooding to make a lick of difference.

Have they been able to search the whole building?

Could easily still be bodies in some of the upper floors.

Same here, maybe they will break the news out bit by bit so as to lessen the impact. And they probably can't get a proper bodycount until the fire is gutted so that'll take a while.

If the exterior was concrete and not plastic cladding designed to reduce refurb costs, It wouldn't have engulfed the whole building. Similar to the fire at the tower block not far from it last year. I just passed there a few hours ago and its a mess.

How that passed design, I do not know. Heads will roll.

They are still associated with Local Authority but managed through private firms who act as the landlord and look after it. If the council needs to shove someone in somewhere they call these guys.

Cheap, quickly built and updated since the early 2000s with external cladding and updating of entry areas - to make it nicer.

What they couldn't do is change the claustophobic feel of them because they're built on the cheap and any additional space needed would have meant more steel, concrete and man hours to build them. Might seem stingy but over an entire block you're talking many metres of steel and cubic metres of concrete so they said "**** it, that'll do!"

This translates to absolute carnage if the corridors and stairswells are used as evacuation points. Remember, the most vulnerable people in a town and city can live here which include the elderly, single mothers, old people and disabled. To get around this they made sure to have dry risers on every point at both ends of the building and adequate fire evacuation measures.

Looks like the fire evac was useless and this caused the carnage. Imagine a corridor 1.5metres wide. Push 20 people down it in a hurry and you'll see some hurt or frustrated and then you have the stair wells.

Now imagine those corridors full of black, choking smoke which can knock you unconcious if you breath in too much. Some residents were saying the plastic cladding was producing horrific smoke which could be toxic - an even bigger killer. The cladding is fire resistant, not fire proof I'm betting because the concrete external surface is all thats left.

The lifts for these buildings are claustophobic too. Lift cars are no bigger than 1.5m in depth and around that in width. heightwise they're around 2m. They are slow and won't work during a fire.

The smoke and fire raced through the building as a result of the ducting and old gas pipes installed when first built. Not sure about the gas pipes but they were probably removing them as flats in the UK are not allowed gas due to safety measures and a major incident in the 80s which resulted in several flats collapsing.

These ducts and vents would have decades worth of dust, rubbish and other crap along with the rubbish and flammable items installed or placed around. Which in itself is against Health & Safety guidelines.

This management company will get pulled up on criminal negligence and people need to see prison time.

Also these buildings were loaded with asbestos so expect the city of London to get hit with big law suits.

You are not making any sense.

I presented evidence for what started a fire. A exploding fridge. That's all was said in that regard. I didn't say that it was or wasn't some jihad terrorist attack. Just a exploding fridge.

You can do your own research on people mocking the victims of the fire. It's on twitter with a singular hashtag. Shoot. They are even blaming Trump for this.

The second point is hearsay, but the first point is of crucial importance because it shows how the authorities thought a fire could be managed in such a building. Basically, the reason there's only one stairwell is because in the event of a fire, they prefer for people to stay in their apartments, assuming that a fire can be contained in a single apartment and by the time fire crews arrive, they can evacuate as necessary. Sadly, this unprecedented disaster threw all those (badly assessed) plans to the wind.

The bottom line here is that even if the management company met the minimum health/safety/fire requirements as required by law, which they stated following this incident, clearly those minimum requirements are a far cry from what they should be.
If there was a single stairwell than it was due to costs and not safety. When they were built we had different way of thinking back then and requirements were not as strict.

If a fire door is burning it means the time it can resist a fire is up or they cheaped out, which is illegal.

When high rise buildings are designed they must have designed fire protection, resistance and features to improve safety and time allowed to escape. We're talking fire doors with 30 mins or an hour before burning, automatic fire door closers which close all doors to stop smoke travelling, sealed ducting once the fire alarm is triggered, HVAC going into immediate reverse thrust to suck out all smoke, fire proof/resistant materials, no locking of fire doors or blocking, no rubbish piled up or use of chemicals/paints that can catch fire. These must be stored behind fire sealed rooms and doors.

Think about it, you're 20+ stories up and the fire dept cannot reach you inside 30 minutes. The same goes for tunnels because there needs to be time for travel to the site, location of the fire and setting up. Meanwhile the fire and smoke is going at it. If the fire exits are few in number, the stair cases become blocked with people or smoke and you are high up, you are fuked and literally praying.

Concrete buildings have the advantage of insulating fire to compartments. If one is one fire the ones surrounding it won't catch fire because concrete is a great thermal insulator and doesn't catch fire. If the fire spread quickly then these compartments were compromised in some way.

What? Cladding is used to improve thermal resistance and the overall look of a building. These old blocks looked horrific and initiatives right across England were made to spruce them up and improve the overall feel of the surrounding area to it so they didn't turn out like the **** holes of the 60-80s era.

It also covers up concrete cancer which is an eyesore that blights many old concrete buildings.

If the cladding was some cheap chinese POS then it should not have been placed on the building. It would make sense if the cladding did catch fire because it was like a bonfire and it spread fast.

Cladding is fire resistant if made properly.

I'd like to point out that the second point is not hearsay and it's been confirmed that they were telling people who were trapped inside to just stay put. This eye witness interview is depressing AF. Everyone keeps saying that it wasn't terrorists because terrorists only attack white people.

And I said no, they don't.

I'm obviously not saying it WAS terrorists. But I'm just correcting the wholr "terrorists only attack white people" thing...

Yh, Im a engineer worked in materials.

Can guess they didnt pay attention to retardant properties of the material and focused instead on looks, waterproofing and thermal insulation. Also the fire has an opportunity to worsen between concrete and the cladding due to their two surfaces.

Someone on the news said that in the event of a fire they were told to stay in their rooms because the fire wouldn't get past the door, so I'm guessing firestops and similar

What I'm betting it was missing was a fire surpression system or just too much crap inside the rooms that wasn't fire retardent that combusted from the heat alone
