Poured a small glass of 2012 Jack Daniels Holiday Select tonight. Purchased it back in 2014 from a store that had it displayed in a case.
Asked them why it was in a case, only wanted around $40 for the bottle. Guy said the owner put it there but wasn't sure why lol.

Sipped on some Jameson In a blue bottle:labels yesterday. Fantastic neat, on the rocks it brought out the alcohol taste some more. Can someone aware on the edition?

Blue bottle? Their Caskmates edition is kind of a teal color I suppose. Finished in ex-IPA barrels.

Can you boys recommend a good first scotch for me to buy? Somewhere around the $50 mark. Nothing blended if possible.

Check out Glen Moray 16 years. Should be around that price, and it’s wonderful.

Do you want something that's close to the taste you know? Or something really different for variety?

Glenfiddich is my recommendation, but Glen Moray is good too - any of the "Glens" will be a fairly accessible drink.

If you want to jump in at the deep end, do an Islay scotch - Ardbeg or Laphroaig are my favorite

The Macallan is always a good place to start too. Runs at $54 here but depends on where you live.

Got me a bottle of Woodford Double Oak and A Buffalo Trace for Christmas. Haven't tried the Woodford yet but really digging the Buffalo Trace.

For those who have done the Kentucky Bourbon trail - which 2 are theMUST SEE? Pick two and only two!!

Wife gave me a "coupon" for a weekend getaway in KY to for Christmas and to celebrate my 40th birthday next month. She has a nice Bed n' Breakfast reserved in Louisville and said to pick out a couple distilleries to visit & tour. Sweet! I've done the downtown Evan Williams Experience on a bachelor party and was really underwhelmed. I wanted more of a behind the scenes look, where they make it, a rickhouse tour, etc.

After some quick googling around it appears the Maker's Mark is the nicest of the bunch (?) but MM is not high on my list of favorites though. I'd rather visit some places that produce the stuff I really like...

So far I am leaning towards:

- Buffalo Trace hardhat tour
- Angels Envy full distillery tour
- Barton 1792 (bit of a drive from our lodging)

Am I on the right track? These ones produce my favorite spirits so it would seem fitting. Suggestions are welcome!

Good stuff brother, I posed the same question in a FB group of whisky enthusiasts and it seems everyone overwhelmingly recommends Buffalo Trace. I'll have to do my homework on the others, thanks!

If I did it again, I would also like to see how a cheap bourbon gets made. You drive right past one (Rebel Yell I think? Been a few years) on the drive from 4 Roses to Wild Turkey.

I think it'd be interesting - there are so many requirements you have to hit to legally call your product bourbon that I wonder what corners they are even able to cut? If you think about it, a bottom shelf bourbon is still a pretty good whiskey in terms of quality.

True story. It's all quite similar. This is a big reason why I prefer Scotch over American whiskey or bourbon. I feel like it's easier to find greater variation in Scotch than it is with this domestic spirits.

2 ounce Buillet
1 teaspoon brown sugar
3 dash bitters

stir for 30 sec or more in mixing vessel with regular ice
pour slowly over king cube in your best glass
take orange peel, rub around rim of glass, then squeeze peel over a lighter flame so it sprays burnt citrus into glass

enjoy an Old Fashioned as I do

Went on a trip down to Austin to check out a couple wedding venues. Stopped by Dripping Springs Vodka for a tour. Pretty small facility.

15 50 gallon stills.











Automated labeler is the only part that isn't done by hand. Caps are also put on by hand.



Picked up a bottle of their orange vodka. It's distilled with orange peel in the still, and not just mixed with orange liqueur. Also stopped by Balcones distillery in Waco, TX. Best known for Brimstone whiskey. Their tours are full for 2 weeks, but I got a flight of 3 of their whiskeys and bought a bottle of Baby Blue. Honestly surprised by how much I liked some of their stuff.
Edit: Oh and Eagle Rare from a liquor store.

Why nothing blended? As your first scotch you should try whatever, not buy blind. Go to a fancy bar that would have a whisky menu with more than 3 pages.....should have some fine scotch's there.

First scotch I bought was Balvine 12 year. Lovely....lovely stuff. Now I only mess with monkey shoulder.

Anyone been to Canon Bar in Seattle? Planning on going in march apparently they have over 1k bottles of whiskey.
