Last part I saw was the girl being at the convenience store, and the trash man shoot out was about to begin. At that point I thought it was pretty good,

He didn't like the ending he received from the nun, read a page of his wife's book, and basically thought up another possibility (although extremely unlikely) that he went to investigate.
The ending is ambiguous. We don't know if Wayne was right or not. Probably not since, as you said, it's highly unlikely that he would just stumble upon the correct clues like that. They are just what triggered that theory of his.

It's referred to as a "story" and a "what if" numerous times in that scene. By an author no less. The woman's identity at the end is never revealed on purpose.

If you want to watch a show that is 75% boring husband and wife arguing and another 20 percent homersexual partner overtones with 5% action, sure.
I don't think the show was even about a kidnapping. It was about some stupid lady writing a book about a kidnapping.

man the final was such let down.
tdlr season 3 in nutshell
Hays is looking for lost girl.....at end of show that girl helps lost Hays
great acting ruined by crappy plot with pointless subplot and time lines
so what the hell was point of introducing Hoyt.
also Hays working as head of security at university where Amelia was teacher
also okay....

guy above that said HBO cut the budget was right.
they probably said wrap this shiit up while nic wanted 10+ episodes of character study between Amelia and Hays

the fact that show creator Nic is writing walls of text on instagram to fill the plot holes
tells you how shiity they screwed up this season.
-Isabel has no dialogue.
-Harris never told Hoyt anything yeah okay
-one eyed guy sat in front of Hay's house for 20 years without courage to say anything
-that guy tom went to harass dan nobody found out what happened to him okay...

agreed with many points on this page.
acting was top notch and you can't blame actors for the weird writing and lackluster finish.
i honestly enjoyed 7 of the 8 episodes. it's like HBO knocked on their door and said "alright wrap this thing up" and the guy wasn't ready for it

Ultimately did not mind the finale, but it did beg some questions or make you wonder "why". I really don't care how Amelia died, old age can be assumed. Everyone complains about the storyline involving her, then complains that there's no explanation about her passing.
I wasn't sure about the ending, whether it was meant to be taken at face value or chalked up to him creating it in his mind one way or another. The lack of confirmation about her identity most led to that; up until that point I thought it was all "real". I think I still lean that way, considering it a tragic way to not provide him closure even after all he'd been through.
A lot of it did seem rushed, that's for sure.

After reading all of these negative reviews I went into the final episode with zero expectations and came out rather shocked. They answered all of the remaining questions that were needed, wrapped up the story in a nice little bow for the most part, and gave us a much better season than last time.
I really don't understand what some of you were watching.

finally finished the season. You know it's not great when I didn't feel the urgency to watch the episode the same night it aired. Same thing that happened with me for Westworld season 2.
Pretty big letdown overall. Season started out strong but then just kinda fell off for me. Finale didn't do too much for me - was super anticlimactic IMO. Honestly liked season 2 more.
