Probably teasing the US with some of the classified research China stole.

China military scientists work on laser to improve hypersonic missile and plane speeds
Device could help aircraft and missiles go faster and fly for longer, says Beijing’s Space Engineering University
Air resistance ‘reduced by 70 per cent or more’, meaning potential for less fuel and safer flights

China is developing a unique laser device for hypersonic military aircraft and missiles to fly faster and further, according to scientists involved in the project.

When travelling at hypersonic speed – five times the speed of sound, or beyond – planes and weapons usually meet a lot of resistance from the air, which can affect flight safety and increase the amount of fuel needed.

Streamlining their shape can help to reduce this resistance, known as “drag”, but further improvements need a more aggressive approach.

Now a team of laser experts at Beijing’s Space Engineering University have come up with a powerful laser gun mounted on the head of a hypersonic aircraft or missile, aimed not at an enemy but at the thin air molecules just ahead. The device can reduce air resistance by 70 per cent or more, according to researchers’ calculations.

The new technology “can change the shock wave structure in front of the hypersonic vehicle and then change the speed and pressure distribution to achieve drag reduction”, said Wang Diankai and colleagues in a paper published in the Chinese journal Laser and Infrared this month.

“Shock wave resistance seriously reduces the safety and economy of the flight,” they added.

China would make use of the technology when engineering weapons although some technical issues still needed resolving, said the researchers, whose university is part of the PLA Strategic Support Force. China set up this dedicated force for space and cyber warfare in 2015.

The higher the “Mach” number – which indicates the ratio of the speed of an object to the speed of sound in the medium through which the object is moving – the greater the benefit, according to studies in China and abroad.

The performance of an aircraft with an air-blasting laser could increase exponentially with speed in comparison to those without, said Wang and the team.

Chinese military drills simulate amphibious landing and island seizure in battle conditions
Beijing regards Taiwan as a breakaway province and has held 20 naval exercises involving elements of island capture in the first half of 2021
Chinese embassy in the UK urges London to respect that China’s sovereignty, rights and interests in the South China Sea have historical and legal basis

The Chinese military has conducted yet another drill featuring assault landing and island-control exercises, Chinese state media reported on Tuesday, continuing its training to boost soldiers’ combat readiness in case of insurgency in the Taiwan Strait.

In addition, the People’s Liberation Army has staged drills in the South China Sea as British aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth sailed through the disputed waters.

An amphibious synthetic brigade under the Xiamen-headquartered 73rd Group Army recently conducted a drill on China’s Southeast Coast, an exercise in the military’s capability of conducting cross-sea island seizure operations.

The PLA has conducted a series of drills with a focus on Taiwan in recent years. Beijing regards Taiwan as a breakaway province to be reunified by force if necessary.

According to data compiled by the South China Morning Post , China conducted 20 naval exercises involving elements of island capture in the first half of the year alone, exceeding the 13 such exercises carried out during 2020.

In the most recent drill, the Chinese military incorporated two types of drones, amphibious assault vehicles, self-propelled howitzers, multiple launch rocket systems among their weaponry, according to video footage from China’s state broadcaster CCTV.

The drill was held in an environment close to a real battlefield in which a small group of front soldiers performed missions at night, amphibious assault vehicles fired guns at sea while heading to the beach and much of the exercise was conducted in weather above 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit).

Hans Kristensen (nuclear-weapons alarmist & opponent) is finally waking up to the truth about China.

Time to bring back the Peacekeepers.

China Increasing Its Intercontinental Ballistic Missile Silos By A Factor Of Ten

Recent satellite imagery shows that China appears to be building another major intercontinental ballistic missile, or ICBM, silo field, the second of its kind to have been identified by analysts in the space of a month. This is a major development, with the analysts responsible for locating it describing it as “the most significant expansion of the Chinese nuclear arsenal ever.” However, while Beijing now seems to be rapidly building up a previously neglected arm of its strategic missile forces, exactly why it is doing this now remains something of a mystery.

The new field of silos was identified as such by Matt Korda and Hans Kristensen from the Federation of American Scientists (FAS) and it’s located near the city of Hami in the eastern end of Xinjiang province, in the northwest of China. The analysts’ findings were first published in the New York Times.

The new missile silo field near Hami is around 240 miles northwest of the one that was revealed earlier this month, near Yumen, in Gansu province.

While imagery of the Yumen field seems to reveal that construction is underway on 120 missile silos, work that started in February, the one near Hami is less far advanced, with work reportedly having begun there only this past March. Since then, however, the telltale dome-like shelters that analysts have identified as being associated with the building of silos have appeared over at least 14 individual sites at Hami, with preparations noted at 19 others. In all, Korda and Kristensen expect that the Hami field could accommodate around 110 silos, arranged in a fairly dense, grid-like pattern, with the silos apparently less than two miles apart.

In the past, the People’s Liberation Army Rocket Force (PLARF) has relied upon a small force of around 20 silos for its liquid-fueled DF-5 missiles, the only operational silo-based ICBMs in its inventory, with a handful of other silos used for training and test purposes.

A recent shot of China's new air-launched "carrier killer".

What's a $10-30 million dollar missile against a $13 billion dollar carrier w/ a couple billion $$ of aircraft on it. Cost effective strategy for China.

They don't need to sink a carrier, if they can disrupt air operations on the deck, it's useless.

Mysterious New Missile Launched By China’s Giant Type 055 Destroyer
Video has emerged out of China showing what is reported to be one of its huge Type 055 destroyers launching a mysterious new missile out of one of its vertical launch cells. While exactly what missile this is and what concept of operations underpins it isn't perfectly clear, there are certainly some distinct possibilities, one of which is highly probable.

The video clip shows a missile being 'cold-launched' then boosted into the air. The booster is relatively short while its payload is a long conical-like shape with small fins at its base. The design is highly reminiscent of a maneuverable reentry vehicle (MaRV).

Another alarm clock.

China’s Massive Fleet Of Radar Planes And The Strategy Behind It
While the rapid pace of developments across China’s military aerospace domain has been widely reported, the focus has typically been weighted toward fighter jets and, to a lesser extent, bombers. But with China having increasingly embraced the tenets of modern airpower, airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) platforms now play a critical and remarkably expansive role within its air force and navy. A sometimes-complex development path has led to a range of different in-service solutions for this mission. The fact that China's AEW&C fleet dwarfs that of the U.S. and is far younger in age is also a major factor to consider and underlines China's unique strategic mindset. With all that in mind, an in-depth survey of the Chinese military’s AEW&C capabilities is long-overdue.

Until the end of the late 1980s and even into the early 1990s, the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Air Force, or PLAAF, still relied on numerical superiority to provide its edge. Although it operated around 3,200 fighter jets, most of the inventory comprised outdated equipment, suffering from poor serviceability and a lack of spare parts. Any kind of close cooperation between fighters, strike aircraft, and supporting assets was almost non-existent. The PLAAF was also hampered by political interference. All this meant it lagged far behind U.S. and NATO forces in terms of technology and capability.

(long historical article continued).

China tops US in defense-related satellites orbited in 2022: Report
WASHINGTON — While the US led the world in the total number of space launches in 2022 with China coming in second, a new report calls China the winner for the most defense-related payloads.

“China is replacing Russia as the No. 2 space power,” Jonathan McDowell, an astrophysicist at the Harvard and Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Mass., and author of the “Space Activities in 2022” report [PDF], told Breaking Defense Thursday. McDowell is also the author of the online newsletter “Jonathan’s Space Report,” which chronicles worldwide space launches.

The US attempted 78 launches in 2022, with 72 of them successful, according to the report published Tuesday. Russia successfully launched 21. China attempted to launch 64, and 62 made orbit. For each country, many of those launches carried multiple satellites.[color=red] For specifically defense-related satellites, the report finds that China orbited 45, the US 30 and Russia 15.[color]

The caveat is that it is hard to be certain about the number of Chinese military satellites, the report stresses, because of Beijing’s veil of secrecy surrounding its national security space efforts. For example, the report notes that eight Shiyan satellites were successfully launched to low Earth orbit in 2022 with unknown missions. “The Shiyan (‘Test’) satellites are a cover name for various Chinese government satellites,” the report explains.

While the statistic regarding China’s defense-related payloads is likely to raise blood pressures across the US national security community, an equally important finding of the annual report is that the number of launches and satellites going into orbit in general continues to skyrocket at an ever increasing rate — primarily do to a surge in commercial activities.

“Generally, space traffic is shooting up (pun intended),” McDowell said.

Chinese Warships Suspected of Signal-Jamming Passenger Jets
Australia's Qantas Airways is warning pilots about ongoing signal interference on VHF communications channels from "stations purporting to represent the Chinese military," on commercial flights over the western Pacific Ocean and South China Sea.

The Australian flagship airline also warned that some flights are experiencing jamming of their GPS systems, causing denial of service (DoS), in incidents "suspected to originate from warships operating off the northwest shelf of Australia."

To boot, this is not the only China-related activity in the world of aviation in the region; on March 2, the International Federation of Air Line Pilots' Associations (IFALPA) noted that military warships located in the South China Sea, Philippine Sea, and the Eastern Indian Ocean were placing VHF calls to some passenger flights and military aircraft.

"In some cases, the flights were provided vectors to avoid the airspace over the warship," according to the alert. "We have reason to believe there may be interferences to GNSS and RADALT as well."

GNSS, short for global navigation satellite system, can be used interchangeably with GPS; RADALT stands for "radar altimeter," and refers to the instrumentation that pilots use to gauge how far above the ground an airplane is flying.

Chinese satellite fires green laser beams over Hawaii as tensions escalate over spy balloon
Astronomers have revealed that a Chinese satellite fired green laser beams over the state of Hawaii – at a time when tensions are boiling over between Beijing and Washington after several foreign objects including a Chinese spy balloon were shot down over the US in recent days.

Scientists at the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) captured the mystery beams of light on video through its Subaru-Asahi Star Camera on Mauna Kea back on 28 January.

Footage of the incident shows green laser light beaming over the cloudy sky over Maunakea in Hawaii.

At the time, the space agency said that the lights were thought to be from a NASA remote-sensing altimeter satellite.

But, on 6 February, the NAOJ made a correction note, instead revealing that the “most likely candidate” for the laser beams was China.

Probably a drop in the bucket, they can get anything they want.

China’s Top Nuclear-Weapons Lab Used American Computer Chips Decades After Ban
SINGAPORE—China’s top nuclear-weapons research institute has bought sophisticated U.S. computer chips at least a dozen times in the past two and a half years, circumventing decades-old American export restrictions meant to curb such sales.

A Wall Street Journal review of procurement documents found that the state-run China Academy of Engineering Physics has managed to obtain the semiconductors made by U.S. companies such as Intel Corp. and Nvidia Corp. since 2020 despite its placement on a U.S. export blacklist in 1997.

The chips, which are widely used in data centers and personal computers, were acquired from resellers in China. Some were procured as components for computing systems, with many bought by the institute’s laboratory studying computational fluid dynamics, a broad scientific field that includes the modeling of nuclear explosions.

Such purchases defy longstanding restrictions imposed by the U.S. that aim to prevent the use of any U.S. products for atomic-weapons research by foreign powers. The academy, known as CAEP, was one of the first Chinese institutions put on the U.S. blacklist, known as the entity list, because of its nuclear work.

A Journal review of research papers published by CAEP found that at least 34 over the past decade referenced using American semiconductors in the research. They were used in a range of ways, including analyzing data and generating algorithms. Nuclear experts said that in at least seven of them, the research can have applications to maintaining nuclear stockpiles. CAEP didn’t respond to requests for comment.

The findings underline the challenge facing the Biden administration as it seeks to more aggressively counter the use of American technology by China’s military. In October, the U.S. expanded the scope of export regulations to prevent China from obtaining the most advanced American chips and chip-manufacturing tools that power artificial intelligence and supercomputers, which are increasingly important to modern warfare.

Most of the chips procured by the academy ranged in size from 7 nanometers to 14 nanometers, many of which are difficult for China to mass produce. They are widely available on the open market: Versions of Intel’s Xeon Gold and Nvidia’s GeForce RTX chips purchased by CAEP can be bought off Taobao, one of China’s largest e-commerce marketplaces. The purchases didn’t include the latest generation of chips launched within the last two years.

Airbus to open 2nd plane assembly line in China, double output
European planemaker Airbus said Thursday that it will double its production capacity in China, as it seeks to bolster its footprint in a crucial market and sidestep potential geopolitical risks.
Asia and China in particular are key targets for both Airbus and its American rival Boeing, which are looking to capitalise on surging demand for air travel by a rapidly expanding middle class.

"It makes a lot of sense for us, as the Chinese market keeps growing, to be serving local for the Chinese airlines, and probably some other customers in the region," Guillaume Faury said during a trip to China, where he is accompanying French President Emmanuel Macron.

Faury later signed a framework agreement to build a second final assembly line (FAL) at its factory in Tianjin, northeast China, for Airbus's hugely popular A320 family of medium-haul jets, at a ceremony attended by Macron and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The new assembly line will begin operations in late 2025.

"It's a way to be probably more in sync with the way the world is developing, with tensions and with more complexities of doing business," Faury said.

"We are delivering more planes in China than what we can produce in China, but the lines are capable of serving other customers," he added.

The new Chinese site was part of Airbus's goal of raising its global annual production of A320 and A321 jets to 75 a month in 2026, up from 43 last year.

The company has an order backlog of around 7,300 planes, with customers often having to wait years for delivery.

Airbus's first assembly site in Tianjin, opened in 2008, is turning out four A320s a month, and the company aims to up that to six a month this year.

China is also pouring money into state-run manufacturer Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC), which is developing a narrow-bodied C919 jet to potentially rival Airbus's A320 and Boeing's B737.

In the meantime, Chinese carriers are big plane buyers, with Air China, China Eastern, China Southern and Shenzen Airlines announcing last July an order of 292 A320s.

The Chinese market represents one-fifth of global passenger air traffic, and Airbus expects growth of 5.3 percent a year through 2041, well above the 3.6 percent growth forecast at the global level.

That would put China's need for more efficient, less polluting planes over the next 20 years to around 8,500 models, Airbus says.

Meanwhile Boeing, which builds all its planes at US factories, has seen Chinese sales crumble since 2019.

It delivered just 12 planes to Chinese customers last year, compared to 95 for Airbus, and has booked just 18 new orders in China since 2018.

Boeing chief Dave Calhoun said in October that his firm is "clear-eyed about the geopolitical risks that are out there, and we are not going to impart new risks on our investors".

With the new Tianjin expansion, Airbus will have 10 final assembly lines (FAL) worldwide -- two at its headquarters in Toulouse, southwest France; four in Hamburg, Germany; two in Mobile, Alabama and the two in China.
