7. The Diary of Anne Frank - (not sure who wrote this one)
I'm surprised at Anne's grasp of language (I know that I'm reading a translation) and insight into human behaviour for a teenage girl. The diary was deeper than I expected and was very telling in describing the tensions and drama that went on for over 2 years in their cramped, under-fed, under exercised house of several different families. Its also some what painful to read about Anne talk about 'after the war' and her plans for the future, also to delight at the Normandy landings after hearing about them in June 1944 (only two months or so before her secret annex was raided and everyone taken into custody).

I've read Unabomber's manifesto, kind of hard to argue about damage of technology to people's mind. I'm just having problem with the violent revolution part of it.

8. Thinking, Fast and Slow - Daniel Kahneman. 8/10. Phew, this one was a bit of a chore to be honest. A lot of great, thought provoking information, but also a lot of redundancy and tedium. It felt like a homework assignment much of the time, but was a rewarding read in the end.
9. Winterkill - C.J. Box. 8/10 Another great thriller from Box.
Still slowly working my way through Anna Karenina. Also reading "Life of Pi" and shocked how much I'm enjoying it. Listening to Jordan Peterson's "Beyond Order" and it's great so far.

The Kind Worth Killing was a reread from several years ago, and I was pleasantly surprised at several of the plot twists at the beginning. I don't recall my opinion during my first read, but this time aroundSpoiler!
Angels Flight was one of the Harry Bosch's with Harry at his best.
For Whom The Bell Tolls is just a great story. An American aligns himself with the Republican guerillas after being given orders to use dynamite (his specialty) to destroy a bridge to prevent reinforcements from crossing the bridge to aid their comrades AFTER an attack has occurred. Suicide is a recurring topic in the novel which is of interest considering how Hemingway dies years later. I don't know if there were many books that openly printed expletives during this era, but Hemingway chose to not include those using, instead, "I expletive in thy milk" as an example

I think the killing of the cop at the end was over the top.

A Gentleman in Moscow – Amor Towles – 7.5/10
This story is about a count who is on house arrest in a hotel in a town about 50 miles south of Moscow during the turn of the century up until the 1960s. A lot of well known (and documented) Russian eras run through this time period such as the Bolsheviks, the Lenin era, the Stalin era, WW2, The Cold War, and etc. However not much of this was really detailed while this "gentleman" never really strays to far from his hotel, which I think is disappointing to say the least. TBH I thought this book was pretty boring overall and only vaguely interesting in a few parts. but only up until the end. The ending really saved this for me otherwise I probably would have given it a 5/10.

I actually like the simplicity of his writing and in character's conversation it makes the story much easier to follow, like Steven King or Dan Brown, as oppose to something complex like Shakespeare. Anyways looking forward to reading this one this year.

The ending passages to A Farewell to Arms broke me. Some authors would have dragged it out but Hemingway chose to go deep quick. The conversation between Frederic and Catherine on the hospital bed is pretty devastating. I always laugh when I think of Bradley Coopers reaction in Silver Linings Playbook. I think he speaks for many readers there!

7. Less Than Zero - Bret Easton Ellis - 8/10
Crazy that this was written when he was just 21. Thought he did a good job of making it brutal and mostly believable without just being edgy for no reason.
8. A Brief History of Time - Stephen Hawking - 8/10
Felt like a retard when it got to the quantum sections. Was a little exhausting to try and understand and took me longer than I'd hoped for such a short book but glad I finally got around to reading it.

I finished this one a week ago. It was written towards the end of the Clinton administration, but it was a very good and well researched book about the ebb and flow of human/civil rights for African Americans throughout time. I always thought of the development of black citizenship throughout US history as a slow but constant progress with occasional leaps forward (Emancipation Proclamation, Civil Rights Act of 1964, etc). I did not understand how often public sentiment would rapidly turn against black suffrage, civil rights, etc. I also did not know how much international pressure on us during the cold War helped push civil rights agenda domestically or how politicians throughout time have used civil rights or public sentiment against civil rights to get or keep power.

That being said, there's basically one woman in the whole book, a young woman married off against her will to a wealthy old warlord, and she is written as an ungrateful harpy who should be happy to be married to a liver spotted old wealthy dude.
All that is a long way for me to ask - is it not obvious that Assimov was a virgin when he wrote thr first Foundation book? He certainly didn't think men in space needed women apart from occasionally using them to reproduce.
