I just finished Steve Cavanagh's The Liar. Steve has created an interesting protagonist in Eddie Flynn, ex. con artist skilled in things like pick-pocketing and fighting (formally taught as a teen in the boxing gyms of Hell's Kitchen) who becomes a lawyer after a judge encourages him to do so many years ago when he elected to represent himself as counsel for a crime he was charged with.

I didn't get the momentum with this book as I like due to being busy with so many other things, but it's a solid 8-8.5/10 book. If you like legal thrillers, give Cavanagh a try.

Since i last posted:

Finished:
1. Nigel Warburton - a little history of philosophy - 3.5/5. Does exactly what it says on the tin, it's decent, but spends about 10 minutes on each philosopher so depth is lacking.
2. Pyrrhus Of Epirus - Jeff Champion - 4/5 - Probably the best single book thus far i've read on Pyrrhuses life and campaigns. Often an overlooked figure these days, but in a different time he might've been Alexander. Related to Alexander via Alexanders mother (Oympias of Epirus), he was just as vigorous and tactically astute as Alexander, but strategically lacking, although Alexander had guys like Parmenio around to help steady his course.
3. Carlo rovelli - Seven brief lessons on physics - 3/5 - I like carlo rovelli, but this really was too basic. Read it in probably an hour, maybe people who have absolutely no physics exposure might get something from it.
4. Homer - The oddeysey - 5/5 - Haven't read this for 10 years, still amazing.
5. Leo Tolstoy - The death of Ivan Illyich - 4/5 - Very depressing, but nonetheless a compelling read.
6. Donald Kagan - The Peloponnesian War: Athens and Sparta in Savage Conflict - 4/5 - These days this seems to be a standard text referred to on the Peloponessian war, after Thucydides. It was a pretty good account, broken down well with a scholarly attention to detail, but his constant simping for Athens makes him lose a star. Everything negative the Athenians do, he finds a justification for, and everything great the Spartans do is described as blind luck, by Kagan.
7. Aristotle - The Athenian Constitution - 3/5 - Almost certainly NOT written by Aristotle, but nonetheless it gives an insight in the early politics of Athens, starting from the time of Solon, ending with the restoration of democracy, when Thrassybullus deposed the thirty tyrants.
8. Anthony Gottleib - The Dream of Reason - 5/5 - I've read a lot of 'history of philosophy' books at this point, include Bertrand russell's amazing history of philosophy, but this is by far the best & most detailed account i've ever read of Greek & Hellenistic philosophy. I also previously read the dream of enlightenment, which deals with the renaissance onwards and was also of very high quality

I read the Breakers series by Edward W. Robertson years ago and really liked it.

I also recently read the first book in his Rebel Stars series (Outlaw, book 1) which takes place in the future after this series.

I started rereading Breakers again and it's just as good as I remember.

Outlaw is also free, and probably some of his other books. It's a good way to sell the series because after I read the free ones I bought the rest of the series.

I highly recommend Breakers for some post-apocalyptic sci-fi if you're in the mood for that.

In general, check out Libby for audiobooks. You link a local library card and can "rent" downloads. They don't have everything Audible will have, but they certainly have most. And it's free

You didn't give any criteria so i just recommended the latest book i read haha. It was a fun read and quite interesting though, and illuminating with regards to the attitudes of society at the time (early 1800s).

Anyone else who can't read anything from female authors? Lol....

Specifically as it relates to non-fiction - NO MATTER what the topic is, they end up on some kind of social justice tangent every single time. Brutal. Luckily they jump the shark within the first chapter or two so you don't waste any time.

Honestly yes. I've tried several times too, especially with female historians, even if they are 'good', they can't help injecting their feminist agenda.

One of the most disappointing books from this perspective i read was SPQR by Mary Beard which i heard good things about and found a thoroughly disappointing, judgemental book. I'm sure there's some good female non-fiction authors out there, but i think they're the exception rather than the rule.

It feels sexist, but i've tried several times and it's become difficult and at this point i don't want to waste my time with it. I do however, enjoy some fiction from female authors like Mary Shelley etc.

The most recent one I tried was related to city infrastructure, and within the first 10 pages the gal was going off about racism and how minorities don't get a fair shake lmao.... If someone has an argument that is objectively true, they don't need to drag race/politics into the conversation.

I agree to an extent. Although I will say, I did enjoy I'll Be Gone in The Dark by Michelle McNamara about the Golden State Killer and her search for him.

dang it's been awhile since I last posted itt. I've read a couple other books since then; The Discovery of Being by Rollo May (I always enjoy him) and another book called All The Names They Used For God by Anjali Sachdeva. It's a collection of short stories and I had it recommended to me. It had some good stories in there, for sure. Nothing terribly groundbreaking for me, though.

I'm now about 1/3 the way through The Heike Story by Eiji Yoshikawa. It's a little hard to follow because there are too many fcking characters and you get mixed up easily, but it's a great story so far regardless.

Quick update since the last one:
Plutarch Rise & Fall of Athens - 4/5 - i've read most of these lives before from other plutarch books (except a couple, such as Aristides 'the just'), still, this was a very good edition with a great selection.
Paul Cartledge - Thebes - 4/5 - Really liked this, not quite as good as James Romm's one on the sacred band of thebes, but excellent and covers a larger time period
Thomas De Quincy - Confessions of an English Opium Eater & Other works - 3.5/5 - This had several works in it. If i was only rating confessions of an opium eater, i'd probably give it 4.5/5. De quincy was clearly a smart man and a remarkable writer, but the other works aren't as interesting.
Wallace H Tucker - Chandras Cosmos - 3.5/5 - Decent book on the various discoveries and their implications made by the Chandra X-ray telescope.
Aristophanes - Lysistrata, The Clouds & The Acharnians - 4/5 - I really enjoyed these, especially the clouds & Lysistra. At this point i've read every one of Aristophanes extant plays, Lysistrata was certainly up there with his best, although my favourite on Reflection is possibly 'The birds' or 'The poet & the women'. The clouds also has quite a funny, but unfair caricature of Socrates as a sophist.

In progress:
Voltaire - Treatise on Toleration/The Calas affair (Fascinating so far, i must say)

Haven't updated in awhile!
I've since finished:
45. Sharp Ends by Joe Abercrombie: Short stories from the world of First Law. Short story books are usually meh for me, but these were really fukking good, and there were several characters who were in multiple stories. He should write a book with the exploits of those two.

46. The Talisman by Stephen King & Peter Straub: Great fantasy story. I was left wishing for a bit more world building from the Territories. I'm gonna have to pick up the sequel Black House and check it out soon

47. Heroes by Stephen Fry: follow up to Mythos in his retelling of Greek Mythology. This one focused on all the big name Heroes, Heracles, Thesus, Jason etc... It was awesome, as much as I liked Mythos, this was way better.

48. Troy by Stephen Fry: Fry's retelling of the Trojan War. Probably my favorite of his 3 books. I love the story of the Trojan war, but the Iliad is one tough read. This was such a fun read, highly recommend (and the other two as well!)

I'm really looking forward to his retelling of the Odyssey which is due out October 2024 (fingers crossed!)

really enjoyed it, cool vampire story from NYC in the 70s. I really enjoy his books, hopefully we'll get a new one soon. he has 2 others that are fantasy rather than horror that I need to check out soon

Had a multi city work trip, so I powered through this one on flights. Great book, bit different vibe than the movie. I was blown away at how much different the end was.

I read the book back in 2003 when I was just barely into my teens. It was way more disturbing and creepy than the movie. I recommend reading King's books even if you've seen the corresponding movie.


I don't think any movie does justice to the books. Especially the Dark Tower movie, Jesus.

I don't think any movie does justice to the books. Especially the Dark Tower movie, Jesus.
The dark tower movie was a steaming dungheap! That would make a better series, but they'd find a way to butcher it all the same.


The book Shining was great, more of a slow burn. Jack nicholson was great in the movie, but he already seemed on the edge on going nuts. In the book he was much more human and actually had a great relationship with wendy and danny.


IT was another good one to compare the book to the movie. I actually prefer the made for TV movie/ mini series over the new movies they did a few years ago. I found it interesting how both film versions split it up: the first half was about them as kids and the second half was as adults. I thought it was much more effective in the book where it alternated between kids & adults the whole way.
