Let's face it -- you're coping with going to work everyday and having your entire life revolve around Mr Noseberg's demands. But somehow it will pay off with "better" friends and women....right....
My pursuits and interests all cost money. I don't watch a lot of TV and I don't play video games. Couldn't imagine spending life indoors behind a screen or trying to only do free/cheap activities.

Between big game hunting, fishing (fresh and saltwater), Wake-boarding, snowboarding, scuba diving and riding motorcycles. I need at least a 20K per year budget for "Fun" activities.

Yes I could live on 20K per year. Aside from going to the gym, going for walks or riding a bike, reading, watching TV and playing video games. I'm not sure what else my life could possibly consist of.

When it comes to women I'd had my fair share of them in my 20s. Now in my mid 30s I have a decent girl locked down. Things go south with her. I'll join my friends and sl00tmax and smash 2-3 different girls per week until I find another worthy of a long term relationship.

No thnx Jeff. I work 3 weeks out the month and take one week off per month for recreational activities. I'll retire in about 10 years in my mid 40s with 150K per year in passive income so I can travel and enjoy recreational activities without having to stress a budget.

You've your free time and you're out the rat race boyo. You just might have to return to it at some point if a financial crisis hits your life.

Everybody is clowning op,

But look at most Americans.

A lot have nothing in their savings. A lot in debt to their eyeballs. A lot will have to work in their 70s. A lot will die broke. Op might be on the extreme side, but his advice is very sound for the average American who don't know crap about retirement.

Can confirm. As someone with over a million net worth, I get by just fine. With a paid for house and car and not many bills, I live on around $25-30K a year easily. That's taking a couple vacations a year and 2-3 four day weekend road trips. It's really not that difficult at all. In fact, in the 2.5 years since I retired my net worth has increased about $100k after expenses through my investments. So I'm living very comfortably and still adding to the net worth.

I guess I could spend more if I wanted, but then again I could also spend less and not really be missing out on anything. The trick to this type of lifestyle is not being like the average wagecuck that buys a bunch of bullchit. Most people live paycheck to paycheck for a reason.

Preach to them brother...some of them will never understand this lifestyle of no debt, crap paid off and minimal expenses. It's an easy life once you get yourself into position with a sizable net worth backing you.

Sometimes I do carry some debt and roll it to 0% credit card to keep my monthly budget on track. So for instance, instead of paying $2500 cash for a new water heater and blowing through my whole monthly allowance. I'll just pay the 2% fee for 15 months at 0% percent. Then the resulting payment of $170 fits nicely into my monthly budget and I get to keep that $2500 somewhere making interest, dividends, or unrealized capital gains.

Most people don't have the discipline to live like this. They have to try and impress people buying fancy chit they can't really afford. I've known people who get $8-10k in tax refunds and blow through it in a month or two. Then have nothing to show for it but a bunch of junk lying around. Most people are idiots and can't math.

I've taken advantage of many 0% offers in my life...probably made $30k+ on credit card rewards and bonuses for signing up and spending X amount. The last one I was thinking about was some different version of my business ink card that offered $1,000 for spending something like $6-7k in 3 months...not too difficult for me to "manufacture" some spending.

and I agree...most people are idiots when it comes to math. i preach to people about how to do things to get ahead but they act like i'm talking a different language as their eyes glaze over. luckily i had practical parents that never tried to impress and taught me to consider the value of anything you think you need or want.

all most people know from a young age is work, work, work...spend, spend, spend, debt, debt, debt [small reward like a vacation], work, work, work....repeat the cycle for 50 years. This in engrained in their minds for childhood.

A medium pizza from Dominos is nearly $40 with delivery, and OP eats out or orders out 90% of the time. He can do this, pay all his bills, maintain his house and car, all on $20k a year.

The math just doesn't add up.

Let's say 25% of your budget, $5k goes to food per year, eating out 300 days a year, that would leave you $16 per meal. A subway sandwich costs $18 now a days. But OP is eating out 3 times a day on $16.
When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.

you're an idiot. i get a dinner box from pizza hut with bread sticks, cinnastix and a medium pizza for $16 (5% back on my CC so $15.50) Pizza hut is 1 mile from my house so i pick it up. feeds 2 people easily.

you are illiterate in math. and i've said repeatedly that i no longer make just $20k...however i did eat out just not as much when my income was around $20k.

Ah, so you order a pizza hut dinner box and that feeds two people all day? And you pick it up a mile away in your clapped out Prius. And you call this retirement?

I drove my Prius for 13 years and never broke down ONCE. If that's clapped out...I'll take it. A car means nothing to me so you can't bait me into the rat race for a depreciating asset. although I did buy a new truck recently.

so what exactly is your argument? only people struggling in pain with life go pick up their pizza?

And where did I say a dinner box would be the only food I would eat all day? I might eat a bowl of cereal/yogurt for breakfast (I rarely wake up in time to go out for breakfast) and go somewhere like Subway for lunch. my favorite food in the world is southern cookin and I get a meal at those places for $8-10.

Doesn't matter, most Americans will die broke in their 80s. OP might not have the best advice in regards to balling outta control in retirement, but better than being a Walmart door greeter at 76

exactly...all these people slaving away for something that might come when they are 70+ and might not be able to enjoy life for long or at all. chumps. I feel like I've already lived 2-3 lifetimes by controlling 100% of my time for so long.

I very much doubt anyone who has the financial sense to save up $ 1 million at 38 and live off $20k-$40k a year will ever have to worry about being a Walmart Greeter. The market crashing would be the only thing.

I haven't read most of this thread, and I'm very frugal/easily content but...OP is really stretching it based on those numbers, even for me.

Did he say how much of that mill is actually invested?

Close to a mill and $20k is just where I feel comfortable telling people it can be done...no work, no boss, no getting up early, no bedtime, no coworkers, no calling boss man when sick, no putting in for vacation, no traffic to and from, no dress code, no watching what you say, no life revolving around Mr Noseberg....for LIFE. Your daily life becomes a 365 day/year vacation.

My income is now well above $20k but I can easily cut back to under $20k without a problem.
